  • 3. INTRODUCTION AND METHODOLOGY CLICK TO EDIT MASTER TEXT STYLES INSIGHTS. RESEARCH. ADVISORY. SECTION 1. INTRODUCTION AND METHODOLOGY 1. INTRODUCTION AND This research provides data-driven insights on the CS market trends. Our METHODOLOGY analyses are based on the data collected through online survey of 32 crowdsourcing service providers, who answered more than 100 detailed questions. The survey was conducted under strict non-disclosure rules, hence all the data in in this survey is aggregated or averaged. 2. MARKET GROWTH AND The participating providers represent a significant portion of the MATURITY crowdsourcing market, collectively accounting for over 200 million tasks and more than 375 million dollars in revenues. The sample of participating providers is very diverse. It includes 3. WORKER TRENDS AND representatives of all 5 categories of Enterprise crowdsourcing market COMPOSITION (as defined by Crowdsourcing.org). These categories are:  Expertise-based tasks  Ideation tasks  Micro-tasks 4. CLIENT TRENDS AND  Freelance services DEMAND PROFILE  Software services The participants also deploy different models of crowdsourcing service delivery, such as:  Provider of crowdsourced workforce 5. PROVIDER STRATEGIES  Facilitator of crowdsourced workforce AND CAPABILITIES  Crowdsourcing platform vendor OVERVIEW To provide deeper market insights, where possible, we conduced our analyses separately for these crowdsourcing categories and models of crowdsourcing delivery.M.9.2.001 © 2012 Crowdsourcing, LLC | research@crowdsourcing.org PAGE 4
  • 4. MARKET GROWTH AND MATURITY CLICK TO EDIT MASTER TEXT STYLES INSIGHTS. RESEARCH. ADVISORY. CROWDSOURCING INDUSTRY ACTIVELY BUILDS SUPPLY, WHICH IS SIGNIFICANTLY OVERTAKING THE DEMAND GROWTH While the crowdsourcing market revenues are growing at a very respectable rate, the supply of resources is growing almost twice faster, showing early signs of supply/demand disbalance in the crowdsourcing industry. This 74.7% 375.70 disbalance often provides an early sign of the 52.5% upcoming industry consolidation. Nonetheless, 214.90 due to limited time horizon of our research, it is difficult to predict the timing and extent of this 140.80 consolidation. 2009 2010 2011 Note: It is worth noting that many crowdsourcing workers sign up for more than one CSP creating double-counting of 6.29 103% the workforce. This behavior is qualitatively known in the industry, but is very difficult to estimate quantitatively and adjust for it. 165% 3.10 Either way we do not believe that this double-counting accounts for all of the significant difference in the growth of 1.34 the revenues and worker base, thus the message above is valid. 2009 2010 2011 Source: Crowdsourcing.org, 2011M.9.2.001 © 2012 Crowdsourcing, LLC | research@crowdsourcing.org PAGE 8

  • 6. WORKER TRENDS AND COMPOSITION CLICK TO EDIT MASTER TEXT STYLES INSIGHTS. RESEARCH. ADVISORY. WORKERS TEND TO TREAT CROWDSOURCING AS A SECOND JOB, MOST WORK AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK Average crowdsourcing worker works at least once per month, about half of them work as often as ONCE A MONTH 100% once a day. Given this frequency of work, it is not surprising that majority of crowdsourcing workers ONCE A WEEK 70% hold primary job and consider crowdsourcing an additional source ONCE A DAY 57% of income. This is most apparent in Software Services and expertise- based categories were over 80% of workers indicate that they hold another job. 82.1% 75.0% 75.0% 85.0% AVERAGE 66.6% Note: it is important to note that 76.7% the frequency of work varied significantly among respondents even within the same CS category, suggesting that the question might have been interpreted differently by the providers. MOST CROWDSOURCING WORKERS ARE BETWEEN AGES 18 AND 40 WITH ~60% MALES Gender composition of the workforce points out slight preference to male population (59% male vs. 41% female). This breakdown varies by CS category with most male workers preference observed in software services (reflecting the overall profile of the software industry) and more female workers in Micro-task category. Interestingly the Ideation category shows almost perfect 50/50 breakdown. • 8. PROVIDER STRATEGIES AND CAPABILITIES OVERVIEW CLICK TO EDIT MASTER TEXT STYLES INSIGHTS. RESEARCH. ADVISORY. CSP INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE IS FOCUSED PRIMARILY ON INTERNET SERVICES AND TECHNOLOGY. In terms of industry domain knowledge CSP appear heavily focused on todays two most aggressive adopters of crowdsourcing: Internet Services and Technology. These industries are by far the most prevalent in the INTERNET SERVICES 41 providers skill portfolios; their score in the providers responses is nearly 3 times higher TECHNOLOGY (inc. SW and HW) 35 than the next favorite industry (Media and Entertainment). MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT 14 This heavy focus on the early adopters of crowdsourcing is understandable from the FINANCIAL SERVICES 8 short-term point of view, but might become a handicap in the long-term. For example GOVERNMENT AND DEFENSE 4 Financial Services and Manufacturing industries are the most important drivers of MANUFACTURING 3 revenues in the non-government client portfolios of traditional outsourcing service RETAIL DISTRIBUTION 3 providers, but score very low in todays domain knowledge of CSP.
