  • QoS enables the shaping of network traffic to further optimize application performance via three steps: 1) traffic is categorized into “application classes,"; 2) bytes and packets entering and exiting the network are tallied, thus providing a clear picture of network traffic consumption; and, 3) shaping policies govern the flow of traffic as it enters and exits the Accelerator.

In our case a 2Mbps link over which the customer was trying to send a file. 1 st graph: due to the negative effects of latency on TCP throughput, file transfer speed did not exceed 1Mbps or 50% utilization of the link. There was no way to accelerate the speed – adding bandwidth will not solve the problem. The only way to improve is to address TCP limitations. 2 nd graph: Here Expand’s TCP Acceleration worked with WAN compression to provide a 7Mbps transfer speed over the 2Mbps WAN. This was achieved by filling the pipe with compressed data. The cumulative effect resulted in transfer speeds which are faster than the actual link!! 3 rd graph: similar to the 2 nd graph, but in this case since the file was in the Accelerator’s cache, the combined compression+TCP Acceleration effects yielded even better results.

TCP acceleration is critical here as well – especially if you want to make sure that you are using as much of your bandwidth as possible. Finally, use QoS to make sure that your transaction does not get run over by other applications on the network. Only a holistic solution can really ensure that your network is optimized. This convention is true of cached memory and files in the Accelerators – the formatting is proprietary and not readable outside of AcceleratorOS.

  • Feature-rich web applications are great for the business but they were not designed to work on the WAN. They are chatty and prone to latency.
  • If the server-based applications were aggressive, the story might be different … but when the undesirable applications (gaming, P2P, streaming, HTTP surfing) are aggressive, and your business applications are not, the problem is compounded. Not only does your solution require intelligence to improve application protocol performance, but control to ensure equitable use of the WAN, and compression to enlarge the effective capacity of the smaller WAN links.
  • Make sure that your VoIP traffic has the bandwidth it needs, while simultaneously giving the rest of your traffic (your business critical traffic) the bandwidth it needs through compression. Also optimize the VoIP UDP to reduce jitter.
  • MPLS promises QoS in the “ISP cloud” where nothing has been possible in the past. Not only that, but most MPLS implementations make use of your existing equipment (and much of the ISP’s existing equipment). One of the best parts about MPLS is its ability to provide differentiated QoS to different applications – all from the same WAN link. This is largely accomplished by marking IP packets leaving your site with tags that the Service Provider uses to determine which QoS the packet will receive in the MPLS network. The problem is that these tags from your site are often masked with traditional WAN optimization techniques that ‘tunnel’ your traffic as part of their optimization. This ‘tunneling’ masks the needed tags for the Service Provider’s MPLS network. While you would get the WAN optimization benefits, you would not get any of the MPLS benefits – which can be significant. The holistic Expand solution does not mask these tags, allowing you to get the full WAN optimization from the Service Provider network, while at the same time getting the full Expand WAN optimization.
  • Dedicated WAN links for back-up and disaster recovery are expensive and sometimes not popular because they serve as an “insurance” policy for business continuity and do not contribute to revenue-generation initiatives.
  • The energy industry often needs to set up shop in the most remote locations – locations that certainly do not have broadband, and often do not even have telephone service. In these cases, the only option is satellite service. The service is not stellar, but the business need is often great. The Expand solution helps to manage these less than optimal links, making them perform on par with WAN connections in developed areas. The transportation industry, simply by the nature of the business, needs to traffic assets that are on the move. In these cases, only radio connectivity makes sense. These connections often have high latency and low efficiency, but they are the only viable medium. The Expand solution dramatically improves their performance, bringing them to the level of conventional WAN links.
