    • The initial idea for this project came from long time Detroit Audubon Society member Jonathon Walton. After many years of seeing dead birds around the base of the building in Detroit where he works, the sight of so many dead migrants year after year compelled him to contact Detroit Audubon to see if something could be done. Detroit Audubon leadership set out to find if any one else was doing anything to address this issue.
  • 5. Fifty-one dead Ruby-throated Hummingbirds found at one structure in Toronto over a 6-day period. FLAP Fatal Light Awareness Program Toronto
  • 6. Safe Passage Great Lakes
    • The Problem
    • HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of birds die each year during Spring and Fall migration due to lighted buildings
    • Why?
    • Birds drawn to lights crash into windows, circle buildings, and/or become exhausted and fall to the ground
  • 7. Warblers and other night migrants are often confused by the nighttime skyline of cities like Detroit. Night Migrants Need “Safe Passage”
  • 8. Safe Passage Great Lakes
    • Programs were found in place in New York, Chicago, and Toronto
    • Detroit Audubon set out to put a similar program in place in Michigan
    • Detroit Audubon Society received support from BOMA (Building Owners and Managers Association)
    • The Macomb County Board of Commissioners, the City of Southfield, and the governor of Michigan passed resolutions and proclamations in support of Safe Passage Great Lakes
