    • What is SEO?
      • What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
      • 73% of the people looking to make a purchase today (B2B and B2C) first research that purchase online. If you’re not found in the search results, it’s like you don’t exist.
      • SEO is not rocket science.
      • Think of it like the U.S. Tax Code.
      • 60% of all searches online happen on Google.
      • 80% of all searchers click on organic listings.

    • #1 – Know Your Keywords & Use Them Correctly on Your Site
      • Keywords or key phrases are what your prospects type into the search engines to find your products and services.
      • Make a list of your products and services
      • Consider “localizing” competitive words (i.e., “minnesota”)
      • Check out your competitors to see what they use
        • http://www.SpyFu.com
      • Visit Google’s Keyword Analyzer (free):
        • Analyze both on descriptive words and phrases as well as the content of your site.
      • Visit WordTracker (subscription): http://www.WordTracker.com
      • Ask your customers what they would use to find your services online!

    • #1 – Know Your Keywords & Use Them Correctly on Your Site
      • The search engines rank web PAGES, not entire web SITES.
      • Focus on no more than one or two keywords per web page.
      • If you sell widgets, and you also sell thingamajigs, then they each get their own separate page.
      • Focus on one idea per page.
      • The search engines reward relevance.
      • Your main keywords should appear 2 or 3 times for every 100 words on your page.
      • Spread them out throughout your page. Use the 3-step paragraph format (tell them what you’re going to tell them, tell them, then tell them what you told them).
      • Don’t force it – keep your human visitors in mind as they are more important than the search engines!
      06/06/09
    • #2 – Create Effective Tags in the Code of Your Website
      • Use your keywords again!
      • Write keyword specific Title, Description and Keyword Meta tags that are unique for every single page of your website.
      • Title tag = the name of your web page. <title>Your Title</title>
      • Description tag =used by most of the engines in the search results pages. <Meta Name=“Description” Content=“Your Description”>
        • Use your main keyword in your description. Think of this like the headline for a brochure or flyer. Stress benefits instead of features.
      • Keyword tag = keywords you want that page to be found for. <Meta Name=“Keywords” Content=“your keywords here, separated by commas”>
        • No Google Wish Lists!
        • One or two keywords MAX per page
      06/06/09
    • #2 – Create Effective Tags in the Code of Your Website
      • Check yours out – Go to any of your web pages and in your browser menu at the top, click on “View Source” or “View Page Source” from the “View” menu. Tip: You can spy on your competitors this way!
      • Image Alt Tags – every one of your images should have one, containing your keywords!
        • No “Logo.jpg” names
        • No “Missing” tags
        • To see if you have alt tags: in Windows, right-click on the image and choose “properties
      • Create a Sitemap for your human visitors – a Sitemap is a directory on your site of all the pages of your site, with links to all the pages.
      • Create a proper Google Sitemap – Google has a special format that they require :

      06/06/09
    • #3 – Create Quality, Relevant Backlinks to Your Web Pages
      • Types of links:
        • Internal
        • Reciprocal
        • One-way Inbound
      • Word of mouth endorsement for your web pages in Google’s eyes.
      • Relevance is still key! All links are not created equal.
      • Ask for links using your keywords and key phrases as the anchor text of the link (the part your click on).
        • No optimizing for “click here” or “more info”
      • Keep it natural – the search engines look for “natural behavior” – no spamming!
        • Add links at a reasonable pace – between 100 and 300 links per month per site, depending upon your site.
        • Vary your anchor text in the links you request.
      06/06/09
    • #3 – Create Quality, Relevant Backlinks to Your Web Pages
      • How to find sites who would be good link partners for you:
        • Search online and find other sites who are listed for your keywords, but are in different parts of the country.
        • Use SpyFu.com to find other sites based on your keywords.
        • Visit websites, blogs and forums in your industry and find out who links to whom
        • Type into Google or Yahoo: link_http://www.yourcompetitorswebsite.com to see who links to your competitors.
          • Google always understates the number of links, Yahoo is a truer representation of the quantity of links a site has.
          • Use this to find out who links to your site and what anchor text they are using.
        • Visit blogs and forums in your industry, register and comment on them with links to your site.
        • Write articles about your industry and press releases about your business and submit them to directories online.
      06/06/09
    • #4 – Create Your Own Off-Site Business Blog and Post Daily
      • Blog = Better Listings On Google!
        • An off-site blog allows you to create keyword relevant links from your blog TO your website.
        • Create links not just to your home page, but to pages on your website related to what you are blogging about that day.
        • The search engines LOVE blogs because of their fresh, new content. Blogs get crawled by the search engines frequently, meaning they find your links (and your web pages) quicker.
        • Much better to have Google “stumble-upon” your page than to submit to directories. Your blog helps Google find your page.
        • Blogs attract inbound links, helping your blog to rank in the search engines and give you another window into your business.
        • Frequency + Relevance = A Search Engine Magnet for your Site.
        • Blog Daily. Use WordPress and the timestamp feature.

    • #5 – Add Fresh, Original Content to Your Website at a Measured Pace
      • The search engines love fresh, new content.
      • Update your website on a scheduled pace.
        • Articles
        • Press Releases
        • Glossary
        • FAQ Section
        • Media Mentions
        • New Products or Services
      • The search engines look for “organic” or natural growth.
        • Don’t add 25 new pages in one day – spread it out over the course of the month.
      • Add an “on-site” blog to enable you to add fresh content every single day!
      06/06/09
