do.

re ceramic tiles a regular feature
in your projects?
Yestheyare.WhatIlikeaboutceramic
tiles is their total reliability and the wide range of
design options they offer: you can’t go wrong with
ceramic tiles, provided they are laid in the right
places using suitable bonding materials. But you
have to be familiar with the vast range of products
on offer. One of the advantages of being based in
Castellón is that you can get information about the
products directly from the factories themselves.
Do you have a preference for any specific type
of ceramic tiles?
Each project is unique, and a lot depends on the
project location and the customer’s personality
and tastes. But I have to admit that when it comes
to innovation in design, Apavisa is pretty high up
on the ranking with some truly spectacular
products, which I use quite a lot. I also regularly use
Tau and Saloni products, and I’ve also carried out
projects with ceramic tiles from other
manufacturers such as Rocersa, Marazzi and
Mainzu. I prefer to work with top-name brands, and
I tend to opt for porcelain tiles, even for walls, as
this enables me to create integral settings. And
when I find a material that I really like, then I’ll go
out of my way to find a use for it, even though it
may be fairly unconventional, such as facing bricks
on ceilings.
Do you like mixing materials?
Yes, I tend to combine ceramic tiles with other
materials such as glass; I also like integrating
ceramic tiles into a setting to the extent that they
almost go unnoticed, although in order to create
that chameleonic effect, the tiles have to be
impeccably laid.
Once you have selected the ceramic tiles you
wishtouse,doyousupervisethelayingprocess?
Of course, and before that I check which is the best
adhesive for that product with the manufacturer
and then pass that information on to the layer. I
create integral interior design projects that include
the décor, finishes, lighting, sanitaryware, tapware
and furniture…and I oversee the entire process. I
also design furniture to order.
Do you feel that communication between
architects and the Castellón ceramic tile
industry is fluent?
Not in my case; the information I receive from
ceramic tile manufacturers is pretty scant. It’s up to
me to research the options on offer and go out in
search of the manufacturer – which I feel doesn’t
make much sense. For instance, I can’t understand
whythefactoriesdon’tsendcataloguestomystudio.
Saloni is the only company that makes the effort to
send me information.
Whatwouldbeyouradvicetothemanufacturers
in order to boost collaboration with architects
and interior designers?
In my opinion our interlocutors should be technical
expertsratherthantheusualsalesstaff.Idon’twant
to be ‘sold’ a product; what I need is information
about the laying and use options of that product.
Another important aspect is that society in general
should look to the architects based in Castellón.
How would you explain Castellón’s
‘unattractive’ urban image?
Castellón is lagging behind in the design stakes in
general because the province lacks a design culture.
Castellón’s urban design is extremely poor, and the
worst thing is that no-one organizes design
competitions or similar initiatives that would take
advantageofthecreativetalentoflocaldesignersand
architects. In this regard, Castellón City Council has
a lot to learn from other cities such as Barcelona or
Pamplona, which have a long-standing tradition in
promoting,motivatingandencouraginglocalartists,
boosting their creativity. This is eventually reflected
intheurbanlandscape,enablingeveryonetobenefit
and enjoy the beauty of the project in question.
Perhaps it’s a problem of financing…
Youcancreatetrulygroundbreaking,attractiveand
original projects on a fairly low budget; it all comes
down to being creative and aware of the materials
available.
