  • ADVERSITY THAT MAY COME FROM BEING A CHRISTIAN rejection from family, friends, community internal struggles for good OVER evil social ostracism/exclusion sorrow over another’s choice etc.
  • It is this second definition that best fits today’s discussion.
  • PEACE W/GOD – until we get justified, there is no peace with God and therefore should be no peace of mind! PEACE W/FELLOWMAN – “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men” Rom. 12:18 PEACE W/SELF – God furnishes His children with a pillow of peace for which they can lay their heads upon.
  • The newness of “things” quickly wears off. The jaded and jagged edge of the world quickly wears on us. Solomon clearly struggled with this in his generation which is easily marked as a time of great peace and prosperity. He reigned at the pinnacle of what we call “The Golden Age” of Old Testament history.
  • “ BLESSED” means “happy” How can one be blessed when persecuted? Answer: When it is done for righteousness sake (10). How can one be blessed when reviled and falsely accused? When it is done for Christ’s sake (v. 11). The fact that we can join the brotherhood of the persecuted is reason to be exceedingly glad (v. 12)
  • Life is full of thorns. Can we bloom like a rose among the thorns of life? New Testament Christians did.
  • Only Christianity can give one condemned to death joy!
  • Could I rejoice like the apostles did in adversity? Philippians is considered a “prison letter.” Paul wrote it from prison, yet is joyful and exhorts others to be (4:4)
  • James 1:2 pictures a person falling. . .falling into (being encompassed about) trials [which is the placement of your person on trial or in an experiment to prove yourself true in temptations, enticements, adversities and troubles. These “trials” are “various” – they come in different shapes, colors and sizes, so to speak. They are an assortment of experimentations regarding our character. They will test your faith but are to bloom into “patience.”
  • In Genesis 11:4; the people thought that they could disobey God and build a tower into the heavens thereby “making a name for themselves.” God destroyed their work by confusing their languages. If we want a name that will be remembered in the heavens, we must simply obey God and speak his language!
  • I don’t know of anyone who will not “amen” John 8:32, with the exception of a few Calvinists who deny one’s free will. Yet, why are there so many who spill gallons of ink to rid Mark 16:16 of its meaning?
  • 2,3. Fruit of the Spirit - Joy & Peace

    1. 1. FRUIT OF THE SPIRITFRUIT OF THE SPIRIT “JOY” & “PEACE”
    2. 2. Galatians 5:22, 23Galatians 5:22, 23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
    3. 3. BUMPER STICKER WISDOMBUMPER STICKER WISDOM “NO JESUS, NO PEACE” “KNOW JESUS, KNOW PEACE”
    4. 4. ““Knowing Jesus”Knowing Jesus” • WILL NOT TAKE PAINFUL, SAD, AND ADVERSE EXPERIENCES AWAY FROM YOUR LIFE – it may create more physical adversities for you – “Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution” (2 Tim. 3:12) – “From now on let no one trouble me, for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus” (Gal. 6:17)
    5. 5. ““Knowing Jesus”Knowing Jesus” • WILL NOT TAKE PAINFUL, SAD, AND ADVERSE EXPERIENCES AWAY FROM YOUR LIFE • WILL IMPART A MEASURE OF JOY AND PEACE WITHIN ADVERSITY
    6. 6. Defining Joy & PeaceDefining Joy & Peace • “JOY” 1. great happiness – feelings of great happiness or pleasure, especially of an elevated or spiritual kind 2. something that brings happiness – a pleasurable aspect of something, or something that is seen as a source of happiness (Encarta Dictionary)
    7. 7. Defining Joy & PeaceDefining Joy & Peace • “PEACE” 1. freedom from war – freedom from war, or the time when a war or conflict ends 2. mental calm – a state of mental calm and serenity, with no anxiety (Encarta Dictionary)
    8. 8. The Christian’sThe Christian’s “Peaceful Trichotomy”“Peaceful Trichotomy” 1. Peace with God – Romans 5:1, “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” 1. Peace with fellowman – Rom. 12:18, “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men” 1. Peace with self (Phil. 4:6-9)
    9. 9. The World’s Wrong ReachThe World’s Wrong Reach The world seeks joy: – by dismissing or eliminating sorrow – by filling their lives with “pleasurable things” PROBLEM: – sorrow surrounds everyone and easily infuses our soul – material/physical “things” only have a temporal effect (Eccl. 2:1-11)
    10. 10. JOY IN ADVERSITY?JOY IN ADVERSITY? 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 "Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 "Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. MATTHEW 5:10-12
    11. 11. The RoseThe Rose A certain man planted a rose and watered it faithfully, and before it blossomed, he examined it. He saw the bud that would soon blossom and also the thorns. And he thought, "How can any beautiful flower come from a plant burdened with so many sharp thorns?" (http://www.geocities.com/lorisgarden/RoseWithin.html)
    12. 12. JOY BLOOMS IN ADVERSITY? 9 For I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. 10 We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! 11 To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless. 12 And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; 13 being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things until now. 1 CORINTHIANS 4:9-13
    13. 13. Persecution Blossoms Into Joy & Peace • Acts 5:41 “So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name” • Philippians 2:17 “Yes, and if I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all”
    14. 14. WHY?WHY? • THE CHRISTIAN’S, “JOY” & “PEACE” ARE NOT CONNECTED WITH EXTERNAL CIRCUMSTANCES • “JOY” & “PEACE” SPRINGS FROM BEING CONNECTED TO CHRIST’S VINE, EVEN WHEN SURROUNDED BY THORNS “2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience” (JAS. 1:2, 3)
    15. 15. For What Should We Be Joyful? For What Should We Be Joyful? 1. That our Savior has come: 10 Then the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 "For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. (Lk. 2:10, 11)
    16. 16. For What Should We Be Joyful? For What Should We Be Joyful? 2. That we have found the kingdom of heaven: Matthew 13:44, “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”
    17. 17. For What Should We Be Joyful? For What Should We Be Joyful? 3. That our names are written in heaven: Luke 10:20 “Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
    18. 18. For What Should We Be Joyful? For What Should We Be Joyful? 4. That we have fellowship with one another: 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion. Romans 12:15, 16
    19. 19. For What Should We Be Joyful? For What Should We Be Joyful? 5. That some who were lost repented Luke 15:7, “I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.”
    20. 20. Fruit of the SpiritFruit of the Spirit • CONNECTED TO THE VINE (Jn. 15:4-8) – MUST ABIDE IN (v. 4) – CANNOT DO ANYTHING WITHOUT THE VINE (v. 5) – WITHER WHEN APART FROM CHRIST (v. 6) • CAST INTO THE FIRE – THE PRIVILEGE TO “ASK” WHEN WE ABIDE IN (v. 7) – BEAR MUCH FRUIT. . .GLORIFY THE FATHER. . .BE A DISCIPLE (v. 8)
    21. 21. JOHN 8:32JOHN 8:32 “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.’” MARK 16:16MARK 16:16 “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” Jesus on Discipleship! Jesus on Salvation!
