Management Theories Unit 2 Db

 1. 1. Management Theories
Carla J. McCoy
Unit 2 Discussion Board – CRJ206
March 31st, 2009
American InterContinental University
Management Style
The Management style used in making the decision that the Police Chief made is Autocratic. He made his decision unilaterally because he only made the one decision to position officers at the public transit stations within the city and have them check all passenger items such as their bags, purses, backpacks, and briefcases. I also believe that the quadrants of situational leadership in this situation would be Delegating because Law Enforcement Officers are willing to do their job and know how to go about doing it. In this particular situation where Officers are posted and have to check passenger’s items I would think they would need a low level of support and guidance in performing these tasks. On the other hand I also believe that another quadrant of situational leadership in this situation would also be participating because at the same time these Officers also need a high amount of support but a low need for guidance. (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute – (RPI), 1996-2009)
I do not agree with the decision the Police Chief made because even though placing officers at all public transit locations would detour another possible attack and allow the public transit locations to remain in working order it would have possibly put more lives in danger without proper Investigations from the proper authorities. I feel that a better solution that the Police Chief could have made would have been to completely evacuate all public transit locations until further notice because it would have given Investigators the proper space they need in order to conduct a full investigation of the terrorist attacks on all locations as well as allow the Bomb Squad to investigate and make sure that no other transit locations were of any threat to the public. (Segell, G., 2005) London is an independent state that is politically organized into a sovereign state with a definite territory. (The World Fact book, 1999) We have to also consider that there are possibly residential and small businesses on the surface near all these stations that would have been affected by this terrorist attack and decision that the Police Chief made as well. Life as we know it doesn’t stop because of any disaster. (Segell, G., 2005)
I do not believe there was time to consult with other agencies but he did have time to consult with personnel before implementing a decision like this. I do believe if the Police Chief had consulted with personnel that someone could have informed him that it was a possibility that other human lives could still be in danger instead of assuming that the threat was and perhaps he would have made the decision to evacuate all public transit locations instead of placing other citizens and officers in more possible danger. I am a strong believer of “There’s a time and place for everything” but I do not believe there is an appropriate time frame in making a decision like this. This was a decision that needed to be made quickly but intelligently in order to possibly save the lives of other citizens. I do believe a bit more reflection needs to be undertaken prior to exercising the option to make a unilateral decision. (AIU Online, 2009)
Conclusion
How much is your life worth? How much is the life of every human being worth? These are answers we can all answer pretty quickly which is what the Police Chief should have done. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Placing Officers at public transit locations where terrorist attacks have taken place is like sentencing them to death. I would hope that the Police Chief would reflect the decision he made and see that his decision could have been a much different one and a much safer one. I believe he needs to reflect on the idea of allowing his personnel to get involved in making tough decisions that need quick action in the future. It would be very wise if all staff, including the Police Chief could get some proper training in terrorist attacks and the possible dangers of the decisions made in the middle of situations like this one so that in the future, wiser decisions can be made and everyone can be better prepared.
