  2. 2. Background<br />One of the largest Colleges in Wales<br />Delivering Library & Information Studies (LIS) courses for over 10 years<br />Able to deliver LIS curriculum across Wales<br />
  3. 3. Information & Library Services NVQs<br />ILS NVQs available at levels 2 & 3<br />Delivered in the workplace – institutions in Mid/South Wales need to provide their own assessors<br />Online support available via Moodle (Virtual Learning Environment)<br />Grants available from CyMALfor candidates (and to train assessors)<br />

ILS NVQ 2<br />Usually completed in 12 months<br />Complete 6 units<br />Three mandatory units: shelving/shelf tidying, enquiry work & solving customer problems<br />Optional units include display work, cash handling, word processing, circulation procedures, securing material etc<br />Competency based<br />
  5. 5. ILS NVQ 3<br />Usually completed in 18 months<br />Complete 8 units<br />Four mandatory units: Two enquiry units, managing yourself & solving customer problems<br />Optional units include display work, cash handling, Cat & Class, spreadsheets, supervising staff, indexing, providing orientation exercises etc<br />Aimed at staff with responsibility for staff and/or resources<br />
  6. 6. New Vocational Qualifications<br />Based on new Occupational Standards<br />Replace NVQs<br />Level 2 Certificate<br />Level 3 Diploma<br />Level 4 units (but NO whole award at level 4)<br />Spiky Qualification<br />Easier progression<br />Emphasis on upskilling rather than competency<br />

Applications of ICT in Libraries<br />Two Qualifications: Advanced Diploma & Diploma<br />Developed in Scotland – awarded by SQA<br />Library specific ICT qualification<br />CyMAL grants available<br />Distance learning -use of ICTL website and Moodle<br />Face to face sessions currently being held in north and south Wales<br />Credits can be used towards Foundation Degree or other HE qualifications<br />
  8. 8. ICTL Diploma <br />SQCF level 7 (level 4 = HNC)<br />Five mandatory units:<br />Enquiry work<br />Reader Development<br />Online learning<br />ICT in professional practice<br />Safe and legal use of ICT<br />
  9. 9. ICTL Advanced Diploma <br />SQCF level 8 (level 5 = HND)<br />Diploma <br />One Mandatory Unit: Reflective Practice<br />One Optional Unit:<br />Complex searching or<br />Teaching skills<br />
  10. 10. New ICTL<br />SQCF level 7 qualification<br />Reduced to 4 units out of a choice of 7 (existing units plus two new ones)<br />SCQF level 8 qualification<br />Same credits but now 3 units (out of a choice of 4)<br />No longer have to complete level 7 qualification first<br />

Foundation Degree in Library & Information Management<br />New benchmark undergraduate qualification (equivalent to old HNDs)<br />Studied part-time day release over two years (for students already holding ICTL Adv Dip)<br />Taught sessions are being delivered via video conference (currently to Barry College and Coleg Powys) alongside face-to-face sessions at Coleg Llandrillo<br />Support material available online via Moodle<br />Tutorial support available to candidates in Mid/South Wales<br />Includes workbased modules<br />Validated by University of Wales, currently seeking CILIP accreditation<br />CyMAL grants available via employers<br />
