  • Newcomers in the top 10: Japan, Kenya and China (China was there in 2011)
    Japan: Maize [zero in 2012 to ZAR1.5bn in 2013]
    Kenya: Flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel, coils of a width of 600 mm or more, less than 3mm [98% increase from 2012]

  • Speaker notes: FDI into the Western Cape has been steadily increasing in terms of the number of projects, however there has been volatility in the value of investments. Since 2008 there has been strong increase in the value of investments, only slightly decreasing in 2010 to 2013, while the number of investments continued to increase only slightly decreasing in 2011 and 2013.
  • In terms of number of projects, the services sector (Business Services, Software and IT Services, Financial Services and Communications) attracted the highest numbers of projects. The sectors that attracted the highest level of capital value of FDI projects are coal, oil and gas; alternative/renewable energy, communications and hotels and tourism.

    Miscellaneous business, professional, and technical services covers the following services: Legal, accounting, management consulting, and public relations servicesAdvertising and market research servicesResearch and development servicesArchitectural, engineering and other technical servicesAgricultural, mining, and on-site processing services
    Other services transactions between residents and non-residents cover items such as placement of personnel, security and investigative services; translation and interpretation; photographic services; building cleaning, etc. Also included are payments for local supplies, utility payments, etc. by non-resident enterprises engaged in construction services.
