Ask: who here loves post-it notes? Who loves multi-colored post-it notes? Who loves multi-colored pens to go with the multicolored post-it notes? Who loves puzzles? Grids? Well, you guys are gonna love this. We love this session too. We think this may be the most important session of the whole training. The ability to do effective strategic planning is what turns an activist/organizer into a true force to be reckoned with. So let’s say you’re working on a campaign about renewable energy on campus, and you just held a rally of 100 students in front of the presidents’ office. How do you know if you’re winning? Let students puzzle over this one for awhile. The reality is we don’t know. The only way to know is in the context of a plan. Is the president the person who makes the final decision about energy resources on campus? Is it the board? Is 100 people a lot? Depends on the size of your school and the level of campus engagement. The reality is, we can’t evaluate our own effectiveness outside the context of a plan. Ask: Why do we plan? Allow a least 5-6 people to answer. Put up slide and highlight anything anybody else missed.
