  • 1. CGIAR consortium members summary of ongoing activities (2013) Haileslassie et al.. /work plan meeting/Kathmandu/27-28/08/13) Photo : Amare Haileslassie ICRISAT/ILRI
  • 2. IDOs: More resilient livelihoods for vulnerable households in marginal areas Activity title: Characterize livelihoods and ecosystems and synthesis lessons Activities description: Characterize household (HH) livelihood assets, production systems and vulnerability (quantitatively ) and HH livelihood and production strategies Milestones and responsible CGIAR-consortium members and national partners Prepare survey tool; undertake baseline survey and synthesize results indicating: constraints, community’s perceptions, socioeconomic and natural resource base status and potential solutions and share the same with stakeholders ( ICRISAT, ILRI, IWMI and GRAVIS-2013); Develop and validate of a typology of HHs for their level of vulnerability (IWMI; ICRISAT and ILRI-2013); Assess existing livestock management practices, trends and impacts on production system functioning and livelihood ( ILRI, ICRISAT-2013); Assess agro-biodiversity in action sites (BIOVERSITY, ICRISAT, CAZRI, GRAVIS-2013)
  • 3. IDOs: More resilient livelihoods for vulnerable households in marginal areas Activity title: Identify combinations of biophysical, and management options for reducing vulnerability and mitigating risk Activities description: Assess technologies specific to crop, tree and livestock that are suitable for different farm typologies and that can increase farmers/system resilience and identify traditional coping/adaptation mechanisms to vulnerability: Milestones and responsible CGIAR-consortium members and national partners Identify existing agricultural technologies and their performances for the vulnerable sites and identify entry points to improve agricultural production and discuses with partners ( ICRISAT, ILRI, Private resource persons- 2013) Experiment and demonstrate selected promising technologies( as entry point) that enhances resilience( ICRISAT, GRAVIS 2013 and beyond) Pilot weather based crop and livestock insurance model with insurance providers ( IWMI, ICRISAT-2013 and beyond)
  • 4. IDOs: More resilient livelihoods for vulnerable households in marginal areas Activity title: Analyse, within target regions, of the trade-offs among options, and knowledge-based systems for customizing options to sites and circumstances Activities description: Analyse trade-offs, ex-ante impacts, for different technology options for the upstream and downstream sites and people: Milestones and responsible CGIAR-consortium members and national partners Map and analyse plot and landscape scale land use/ land cover and compare across temporal and spatial scale ( ICRISAT 2013) ; Collect soil samples and analyse for major limiting factors (ICRISAT; CAZRI 2013 and beyond); Identify and document hot spots areas for biophysical intervention and these biophysical spatial target areas linked to other livelihood assets (through PRA and vulnerability assessment ( ICRISAT-2013)..
  • 5. IDOs: More stable and higher per capita income for intensifiable households Activity titles: 1) Characterize livelihoods and ecosystems and synthesis lessons across potentially intensifiable systems; 2) Asses technologies specific to crop, tree and livestock that are suitable for different farm typologies and that can increase farmers/system per capita income Activities description: Characterize household (HH) livelihood assets, production systems and vulnerability (quantitatively ) and HH livelihood and production strategies : Milestones and responsible CGIAR-consortium members and national partners All milestones and CGIAR_CONSORTIUM members are the same as in IDO1. What changes is the national partners. ( UAS, ANGRAU, AF-Ecology Centre the same time table) ; Cross fertilize experiences and lessons from Bhoochetena and VDSA through for example economic impact analysis and bio economic modelling ( ICRISAT, ILRI- 2013 and beyond)
  • 6. IDOs: More stable and higher per capita income for intensifiable households Activity titles: Analyse, within target regions, of the trade-offs among options, and knowledge-based systems for customizing options to sites and circumstances Activities description: Analyse trade-offs, ex-ante impacts, for different technology options for the upstream and downstream sites and people : Milestones and responsible CGIAR-consortium members and national partners Cross fertilize experiences and lessons from Bhoochetena through for example economic impact analysis( ICRISAT 2013) Bioeconomic modelling using longer term available data from ICRISAT archive ( ICRISAT, ILRI- 2013 and beyond)
  • 7. IDOs: More sustainable and equitable management of land, water and genetic resources in pastoral and agro pastoral systems Activity titles: Identify and pilot combinations of biophysical, and management options for enhancing income and ecosystem services on CPR Activities description: Piloting and demonstrating selected NRM options for their performance in terms of enhancing production capacity and providing ecosystem services in the representative systems: Milestones and responsible CGIAR-consortium members and national partners Pilot an improved common property resources management practices (protection, planting, water harvesting and institutional arrangements) on 10-15 ha in each of the action research Districts [Barmer, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur, ANANTAPUR and Kurnool; (ICRISAT, ILRI, GRAVIS, AF Ecology Centre-2013 and beyond )] Evaluate the costs and benefits of such integrated approaches on system sustainability and resilience ( ICRISAT; GRAVIS-2013 and beyond)
  • 9. IDOs: More integrated, effective and connected service delivery institutions underpinning resilience and system intensification Activity titles: Identify and implement models and approaches for strengthening innovation and service delivery systems in drylands Activities description: Characterize institutions, partnerships and their effectiveness in terms of service delivery for system intensification, resilience and collective actions : Milestones and responsible CGIAR-consortium members and national partners Map actors/institutions involved and their roles and partnership for operationalizing system approach for the target DS (ICRISAT, all other implementers 2013 and beyond ) ; Documenting mode of convergences and identifying drivers for achieving desired impact through Bhoocetana initiatives ( ICRISAT- experiences from other semiarid areas in Karnataka); Operationalize and formalize innovation systems approach in DS and develop TOR and summary report and communicate to the members for endorsement ( ICRISAT, ILRI, IWMI, BIVERSITY, 2013 and beyond) .
