India is largely affected by it’s geography <ul><li>Himalayan mountains to the North created protection from other ancient cultures </li></ul><ul><li>Ganges River – carried water from the melted Himalayan snowcaps to nourish farmland </li></ul><ul><li>Deccan – a flat, dry area in the middle of India </li></ul>

The Caste System <ul><li>India divides people up into classes called Castes </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Once you are born into a Caste you must stay at that status for the rest of your life </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Your Caste tells you what kind of job, schooling, spouse and friends you can and can not have. </li></ul></ul></ul>
  4. 4. Brahmin- priests Kashatriya- warriors Vaishya- commoners Sudra- merchants or farmers The Caste System is diagramed below. Notice the Brahmins or priests are the richest and most powerful in society. Untouchables were not considered human. They were given the worst jobs, like picking up trash or dead bodies. No Indian would touch or take food from an untouchable

India’s Hindu Religion <ul><li>Hindus believe in one single force in the universe called Brahman </li></ul><ul><ul><li>It is the individual’s duty to get to know Brahman </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Reincarnation – belief that one’s soul is reborn in a different form after death </li></ul><ul><ul><li>After many reincarnations, one’s soul reaches Brahman </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Karma is the meter that determines what your soul will be reborn as </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Bad actions cause bad karma </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Good actions cause good Karma </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Dharma are your duties in life </li></ul><ul><ul><li>If you follow your Dharma -> You’ll have good Karma ! </li></ul></ul>

Buddhism Buddhism was founded in the late 560s A.D. by a man named Siddhartha Gautuma <ul><li>Buddhists believe: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>In Four Noble Truths </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>That attachment to things causes sorrow </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>That the main goal is to reach Nirvana </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Nirvana is the ultimate reality </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>If you follow the Eight Fold Path , you will reach Nirvana </li></ul></ul>
