JC073 Changing Oceans Expedition - Murray Roberts

  1. 1. Summary & Initial ResultsJ Murray Roberts & shipboard party
  2. 2. JC073 Vital Statistics• Full science crew, 11 institutions (Denmark, Germany, Spain, UK, USA)• 5 sites visited• 181 activity stations• First visual surveys Hebrides Terrace Seamount (JNCC)• 41 ROV dives (25% Holland-1 dives to date)• Departure delayed 34 h (ROV not ready)• 15 h weather downtime• Issues with ROV mob/operation total 66 hours
  3. 3. Example of data collected• Aquatic Eddy Correlation (Karl Attard, Henrik Stahl, Ronnie Glud)• System measures high-frequency (up to 64Hz) 3-dimensional current velocity and O2 concentrations and integrates a large area of the seabed between 50-100 m2
  4. 4. O2 uptake rateincreases by 1.5xfollowing anincrease in currentvelocity from 9 to13 cm/s.
  5. 5. Cruise Outreach• Stewart Stephenson MSP Minister for Environment and Climate Change visited ship• Benbecula school children visit at sea• BBC One Show visit at sea• Cruise blog (10,000 visits; Jubilee TV coverage)• Interviews on BBC Radio & TV• Edinburgh Primary School assemblies & classes• Facilitated debates with Our Dynamic Earth
  6. 6. Unexpected additional outreachNew School Mural, Erksine
  7. 7. Cruise Movie
  8. 8. Many thanks to• Captain Bill Richardson & crew of RRS James Cook• Darren Young (cruise manager) & Terry Edwards (science liasion)• Will Handley & ROV team• Colin Day & all at NMFSS• UKOA for added-value awards
