Transcript of "Kick The Robbers Out Slides, 5/2/10"

  1. 1. On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple area and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts.
  2. 2. And as he taught them, he said, "Is it not written: " 'My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it 'a den of robbers.’“ The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching. Mark 11:15-18 (NIV)
  3. 3. I. The temple is God’s house – no robbers allowed!
  4. 4. “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?” 1 Corinthians 3:16 (NIV)
  5. 5. I. The temple is God’s house – no robbers allowed! II. Money & possessions compete with God for our attention.
  6. 6. “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Matthew 6:24 (NIV)
  7. 7. I. The temple is God’s house – no robbers allowed! II. Money & possessions compete with God for our attention. III. How we handle money & possessions affects our fellowship with God!
  8. 8. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? Luke 16:11 (NIV)
  9. 9. Ever since the time of your forefathers you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you," says the LORD Almighty. "But you ask, 'How are we to return?‘ "Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. "But you ask, 'How do we rob you?‘"In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—the whole nation of you— because you are robbing me.
  10. 10. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit," says the LORD Almighty. "Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land," says the LORD Almighty. Malachi 3:6-12
  11. 11. "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone." Matthew 23:23
