Intro self – 17 years in services recruitment, 8/9 years attending CIBSE meetings and 2/3 years since being invited to join the committee.
Always sought to keep recruitment and CIBSE separate as don’t want to be seen to be here for anything but own interest and support for the industry. Hopefully my contribution to date supports that!
This presentation may not be what you expect..
Conducting your own appraisal is key before doing anything with your career. Under these headings I will guide you through why and how of that my logic.
I blundered in to recruitment from hotels and catering, it has been an enjoyable path to follow, but as the industry is (was?!) fairly young, there was no defined route per se.
You have the advantage of that, the question is where do you want to be?
That in mind, you need to consider your start point and what you need to make the transition and how you can get it.
Next you need a structure for your thoughts and I’ll talk you through a quick tool…
Pop in where you want to be and where you are plus it is good to show where you came from.
Add in dates to give yourself a timeline
Add in the intermediate steps and your age at each one – obviously this will be a range, especially the further in to the future you go.
Next think about the skills you have gained and are currently gaining; consider your qualifications that you have and will need too.
Next look at the next step up; what changes and what more should you be looking to gain or do?
Finally, complete the top part of the triangle and you will have a picture of where you are, what you need to build upon and what you will need to learn. It is crucial to look back and ensure that you have a solid foundation to all the skills you have identified or you will forever have a weakness or something that could hold you back.
Something that may well be able to help is Social Media.
First definition is the positive, the second is something to consider. Good example is Emma Way; one tweet and got 7 points, £300+ fine and lost her job as well as demonstrating her character, attitude and lack of knowledge in the worst possible light. Scary considering it was just 160 characters…
Think about what you want; gossip, converrstaion, sharing information, gaining contacts or making connections.
For gossip or cute animals, Facebook or Pinterest is fantastic, for contacts Twitter and LinkedIn is superb when used properly while for sharing information Twitter takes some beating. Just don’t expect to find many M&E Engineers on there!Social media is based around giving; time, information and also personality/personal info – be clear how much you want to give. Social Media is fun and useful, but it is also a remarkably effective time bandit if you let it…
A key part of appraising yourself and your situation is your CV; it is not just for changing jobs, but is an effective way of monitoring how you are doing in progressing from point to the other. As you can imagine I prefer the second definition!
What are you writing the CV for? Is it for you to track you? Is it for your Chartership interview or an appraisal meeting? Are you looking for a new role? Think about the reader in each case.
Be honest, if it is just for you and you are glossing over points who are you kidding? What have you developed since the last time you reviewed it?
Back up your statements, ensure the reader knows why you are making these claims and why they are justified.
