How To Get A Great Job In A Bad Economy How To Get A Great Job In A Bad Economy Presentation Transcript

    • How to get a good job in a bad economy Step One
    • First, learn how to answer typical HR questions For example
      • Q. What’s the worse mistake you ever made?
      • Staying too long in a job I’d outgrown.
      • Q. What’s the worst thing you would say about yourself?
      • I have little patience with people who don’t pull their weight.
      • Q. Have you ever told a lie?
      • I don’t tolerate lying. And if I have, it’s been to save someone’s feelings.
    • The trick is to answer the questions with a positive
    • Next, learn the difference between Problem-Solution and Issue-Expectation
    • Problem-Solution is the surface situation and its immediate resolution A pipe is leaking. We need to fix the pipe.
    • Issue-Expectation is the deeper problem and the long-term resolution The pipe is leaking because our infrastructure is old. We need to re-think our basics.
    • Next, learn how to “ go around” the piles of job applications and connect directly with the people you want to work with
      • How do I do that?
      • Go to the company’s web site
      • Find their press releases
      • Read them—going back a year or more
      • These press releases will give you three important pieces of information
      • The names of key company people and what they do
      • Important company projects
      • Information on mergers and acquisitions
      • Use this treasure of information to:
      • Send an email to key company people
      • Explain how you can help the company
      • And finally, find an opening with a company recently purchased by the company you want to work for
      • If you do the homework, three things may happen:
      • Your emails will be ignored
      • They’ll refer you to the HR people
      • Or you will strike up a dialogue with a key player
      • And that’s good. Very good.
