VMware Site Recovery Manager and Compellent VMware Site Recovery Manager and Compellent Presentation Transcript

    • VMware Site Recovery Manager and Compellent Darin Schmitz
    • Introduction to Site Recovery Manager
      • VMware Site Recovery Manager is a tool used for automating your virtual infrastructure disaster recovery
        • Eliminate complex manual recovery steps
          • Presenting datastore volumes to the server
          • Adding virtual machines to inventory
          • Changing IP address’ of virtual machines
          • Powering on virtual machines in a specific order
          • Can execute custom scripts for miscellaneous DR tasks
        • Non-disruptively test disaster recovery plans
          • Without disruption to active replications
          • Automatic creation of an isolated test network
          • Automated cleanup after each test run
        • Initiate a recovery with a single button
          • “ CEO Recovery” – With proper credentials, the recovery is easy enough for any employee to execute
    • The Compellent Storage Replication Adapter
      • The Storage Replication Adapter (SRA) created by Compellent, allows SRM to communicate with Compellent Enterprise Manager to execute a basic set of disaster recovery tasks
        • Discover Arrays
        • Discover LUNs
        • Test Failover
        • Start Failover
        • Stop Failover
      • It is important to note that there is no “Failback” option in SRM
        • Failing the virtual infrastructure back to the main site is a manual process, but can be automated by reversing the replications and configuring SRM to fail in the opposite direction
        • Failback instructions are included in our Enterprise Manager documentation

    • How Site Recovery Manager Works
      • For “testing” or “running” a recovery plan, SRM communicates with Enterprise Manager to execute storage tasks:
        • The SRA makes a call to Enterprise Manager to either:
          • Test Failover
          • Start Failover
        • Enterprise Manager communicates with the Storage Center controllers to “Prepare Storage”:
          • Create read/writable “View Volumes” from a replays associated with each of the datastore volumes with virtual machines being recovered
          • Map the view volumes to the appropriate ESX servers
          • If actually “running” the recovery plan, it will automatically break the replications if the source system is still active
        • ESX servers rescan their HBAs to detect recovered LUNs
        • SRM imports all of the virtual machines into inventory
        • Powers on the virtual machines (in the user defined order)
          • Changes IP address if defined
          • Waits a predetermined amount of time for VMware Tools to be loaded
        • After the plan executes in test mode, it will automatically perform a “clean-up” when the user specifies.
          • Enterprise Manager will instruct the controllers to unmap and remove “View Volumes”, effectively cleaning up the storage for the next execution
    • Demonstration Overview
      • Configuration
        • Main Site (Protected Site)
          • SRM Connections
            • Connecting the two sites together
          • Array Managers
            • Connecting to Enterprise Manager
          • Inventory Mappings
            • Establishing the one-to-one resource relationships between sites
          • Protection Groups
            • Which virtual machines and datastores need to be protected
        • Secondary Site (Recovery Site)
          • Create a Recovery Plan
            • Adding custom scripts
            • Adding messages
      • Testing the Recovery Plan
        • Verifying a successful test
