  • 1. Google Survey of CDL<br />The Technology in Action subcommittee of the Center Technology Committee surveyed Center personnel to collect information on the use of Google Applications for work and personal reasons.<br />
  • 2. Purpose:<br />to assess which Google applications garner the most interest and use<br />assess current use of collaborative work spaces<br />for student collaborative work<br />For professional development<br />or office management tasks<br />to collect ideas for future use so as to evaluate what support maybe needed in the future<br />
  • 3. General Use:<br />Of the 198 respondents <br />26% are currently using Google Apps for work-related reasons, whereas<br />87% are using Google Apps for personal activities. <br />60% have Gmail that is used for both personal and professional reasons. <br />
  • 4. Work-related use:<br />with students in learning activities and <br />as a tool for course development<br />The primary work-related tools<br />Google Documents (GoogleDocs) <br />Google Maps<br />Google Calendar<br />Google Scholar, Google Images, and Google Earth.  <br />
  • 5. Personal use:<br />Why did we survey this - to gauge comfort with the tools and to compare usage in a less restrictive environment.<br />more prolific with the use of Google Apps for personal use<br />( 90% of respondents use GoogleApps in their personal space) <br />Same tool preferences as work-related use:<br />Most popular:<br />Google Documents (GoogleDocs) <br />Google Maps<br />Next most popular:<br />Google Calendar<br />Google Scholar, Google Images, and Google Earth.  <br />
  • 6. Future visions:<br />The majority are interested in using these tools for course development, with the focus being for student learning activities. <br />One-third of respondents envision using shared spreadsheets to track work <br />one-quarter envision using the tools for administering courses.<br />32% have ideas for using Google Apps  in future<br />
  • 7. Future ideas:<br />Google spreadsheet to replace grade book.<br />GoogleDocs for cross cultural team assignments<br />International college students working with CDL/IP<br />simultaneous editing and interaction in real time<br />joint writing with students/instructor, students see markup on their paper, work together with instructor on documents<br />team learning activity<br />collecting student opinions<br />tracking<br />exploring geography through Google earth in addition to weblog activities<br />students need to search widely for info and Google searching is one way<br />use Google maps in enabling student work in community organizing<br />Google Document for better collaborative writing (better than Elluminate)<br />Teach students about the services Google has available for non-0profits as they initiate their projects<br />Small group work<br />
