  • 1. Google Survey of CDL
    The Technology in Action subcommittee of the Center Technology Committee surveyed Center personnel to collect information on the use of Google Applications for work and personal reasons.
  • 2. Purpose:
    to assess which Google applications garner the most interest and use
    assess current use of collaborative work spaces
    for student collaborative work
    For professional development
    or office management tasks
    to collect ideas for future use so as to evaluate what support maybe needed in the future
  • 3. General Use:
    Of the 198 respondents
    26% are currently using Google Apps for work-related reasons, whereas
    87% are using Google Apps for personal activities.
    60% have Gmail that is used for both personal and professional reasons.
  • 4. Work-related use:
    with students in learning activities and
    as a tool for course development
    The primary work-related tools
    Google Documents (GoogleDocs)
    Google Maps
    Google Calendar
    Google Scholar, Google Images, and Google Earth.  
  • 5. Personal use:
    Why did we survey this - to gauge comfort with the tools and to compare usage in a less restrictive environment.
    more prolific with the use of Google Apps for personal use
    ( 90% of respondents use GoogleApps in their personal space)
    Same tool preferences as work-related use:
    Most popular:
    Google Documents (GoogleDocs)
    Google Maps
    Next most popular:
    Google Calendar
    Google Scholar, Google Images, and Google Earth.  
  • 6. Future visions:
    The majority are interested in using these tools for course development, with the focus being for student learning activities.
    One-third of respondents envision using shared spreadsheets to track work
    one-quarter envision using the tools for administering courses.
    32% have ideas for using Google Apps  in future
  • 7. Future ideas:
    Google spreadsheet to replace grade book.
    GoogleDocs for cross cultural team assignments
    International college students working with CDL/IP
    simultaneous editing and interaction in real time
    joint writing with students/instructor, students see markup on their paper, work together with instructor on documents
    team learning activity
    collecting student opinions
    tracking
    exploring geography through Google earth in addition to weblog activities
    students need to search widely for info and Google searching is one way
    use Google maps in enabling student work in community organizing
    Google Document for better collaborative writing (better than Elluminate)
    Teach students about the services Google has available for non-0profits as they initiate their projects
