Fundraising Predictions: 2014 and Beyond (Texas Library Association)

Published on

I enjoyed speaking July 9, 2014 during the Annual Assembly of the Texas Library Association in Austin at the Hyatt Regency.

During the early portion of our "Great Recession," I spent a great deal of time researching and studying trends that affect nonprofit organizations and their fundraising activities. Several of the discussions in my 2014 presentation may be found in written form on Carolyn's Nonprofit Blog (carolynmappleton.wordpress.com). Numerous helpful links are included, and I continue to update my posts with new links as I discover them.

I also referenced the following resource in my presentation, from the National Council on Nonprofits, "2014 Nonprofit Trends to Watch." I recommend it highly: http://www.par.net/Portals/0/2014-trends-to-watch.pdf.

Fundraising Predictions: 2014 and Beyond (Texas Library Association)

  1. 1. Tried and True • Each NGO is unique and has developed its own fundraising preferences • Seek financial support in ways that work best for your organization • Build upon your strengths • Continually review and refine NGO = Non-governmental Organization
  2. 2. Sisyphus by Titian, Museo Nacional del Prado (ca. 1548)
  3. 3. Having Said That … • Competition for funding continues to increase as more NGOs are formed and needs for their services increase • Economy has been slow to recover • Government debt is at an all-time high (and anticipated to increase)
  4. 4. Recommendations • Decrease your dependence on government funding • Invest in private sector fundraising (individuals, families, corporations and foundations provide most charitable funding) • Stewardship of existing donors is generally lacking and could be improved sector-wide
  5. 5. Don’t Forget! • Volunteers • Women • Boomers • Professional advisors • Communication tools including social media (communication = stewardship) • “High tech” tools to help you focus and do more with less • Crowdfunding
