  • The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) is Europe’s first venture into satellite navigation. It augments the two military satellite navigation systems now operating, the US GPS and Russian GLONASS systems, and makes them suitable for safety critical applications such as flying aircraft or navigating ships through narrow channels.   Consisting of three geostationary satellites and a network of ground stations, EGNOS achieves its aim by transmitting a signal containing information on the reliability and accuracy of the positioning signals sent out by the Global Positioning System (GPS) and the Global Orbiting Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS). It allows users in Europe and beyond to determine their position to within 2 metres, compared with about 20 metres for GPS and GLONASS alone.

  • L EGNOS “ Precision Agriculture is about doing the right thing, in the right place, in the right way, at the right time” EGNOS: the most affordable solution for a wide range of applications c.1m Low-value crop cultivation (e.g. cereals) Low-accuracy operations (fertilising and reaping) c.2.5m Field measurement Boundary mapping and updating Legislation/ management c.2.5m Land parcel identification/ geo-traceability Post harvest pick-up Supervised tracking of livestock, manure, etc. Agro-logistics 2-5m Individual livestock positioning and virtual fencing Dairy c.2cm High-value crop cultivation (potatoes, vegetables) Precision operations (sowing and transplanting) Arable Required accuracy level Application field Application category
  • Why EGNOS in Agriculture? High Precision, Low Cost Link to Video of EGNOS in Agriculture
  • 0 GNSS-equipped tractors forecast (2009E-12F) 09E Thousands of units 12F 11F 10F Rest of the World Europe 78% 23% GNSS cumulated revenues 2010-2030 Total = €20 billion 8% of tractors are equipped with a GNSS device in EU Expected 13% in 2013 The number of GNSS devices in precision agriculture is increasing fast
    • No installation costs neither annual subscription costs are required
EGNOS is the best GNSS technology to be applied on a 16 HA farm: on average European farms are 16 HA wide EGNOS is free EGNOS is widely available all over Europe EGNOS is convenient
    • 1 on 10 tractors in Europe are equipped today with GNSS receivers, most of them are EGNOS enabled
    • The application of EGNOS involves:
      • 2,36% reduction in time, fuel and seed quantity
      • 2,49% reduction in fertilize and Plant Production Products quantities
    A practical example
  • Promotion Partnership with industry players Leverage Framework Programme Test and exploit new service (EDAS) “ Harvesting” EGNOS potential

  • GNSS provides an efficient technology for mapping and are widely used by organisations such as utility companies as well as regional and local authorities. The use of GNSS in mapping often means services with centimetre level accuracy and substantial costs (e.g., infrastructure, equipment, software, service). Now EGNOS can contribute in growing the use of GNSS in real time EGNOS and Mapping - providing free accuracy that is widely available
  • For many mapping applications meter level accuracy is sufficient Applications such as thematic mapping for small and medium municipalities, forestry and park management as well as surveying of utility infrastructures can benefit from EGNOS. Most of the devices used for mapping are already EGNOS-ready. Thus, EGNOS also allows more and more non-professionals to access GNSS mapping technologies. Free accuracy…

  • Mapping: a new promising EGNOS segment “ GSA folks provide a dynamic and effective service in educating the community of ground users (…) Yes, my European brethren, EGNOS can be used reliably for sub-meter mapping.” Eric Gakstatter GPS World Editor Survey & Construction “ We think EGNOS can play a role in the Mapping sector and are happy to help exploring this by promoting the GSA-survey amongst our partners across Europe.” Jean-Yves Pirlot President of the Council of the European Geodetic Surveyors
    • Positioning, delivering 50 cm - 1m accuracy, is well received already at launch (INTERGEO)
    • Device manufacturers give positive feedback
    • Users, i.e. Surveyors, municipalities…, show strong interest
    • Experts confirm SBAS is used for sub-meter mapping in US, with similar potential in EU

  • EGNOS is… … an effective option for a wide range of mapping applications with meter accuracy … free; it does not require installation of hardware nor ongoing subscriptions. … in most of the new GNSS devices … covers the majority of Europe - no white spots … permitting real time positioning. … thanks to EDAS, also receivable by terrestrial communication means, (e.g., internet or GPRS) … providing system integrity, supplying information on the reliability of GPS signals. In summary: why EGNOS? EGNOS is Europe’s first venture into the field of GNSS and a precursor to Galileo, Europe’s global satellite navigation system, currently under development. EGNOS is an open system, now operational and available for use.
