It captures and stores energy in the form of ice for use during peak periods when cooling loads are excessive, electricity is expensive or when the grid is stressed. Renewable energy is becoming a bigger component of nighttime generation which helps to lower our dependence of fossil fuels while reducing emissions. Because it is generated more efficiently, less source fuel is used which reduces GHG emissions. The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) says that the only form of energy not to increase in cost in the last 40 years, when converted to todays dollars, is night time electricity. What a great hedge in todays volatile energy market!
