  1. 1. Satellite Technology
  2. 2. GPS• A network of 24 satellites orbits the Earth twice a day, transmitting signals back to earth.• A GPS receiver locks onto signals from three or more satellites to determine your location, using a method called trilateration.• Your receiver calculates the difference between the time a satellite sent a signal and the time your system received it.• Using the information gathered from several signals, the receiver triangulates your exact position.• It can determine how fast youre going and how long it will take you to reach your destination. GPS receivers are extremely accurate, many within 1 metre.
  3. 3. • GPS devices come loaded with maps which work together with the sattellites to give you a visual location.• Typically these maps are basic road maps, however you can buy GPS with national parks and other areas with terrain.• Or you can buy and download maps to your GPS.• Many GPS functions on phones now use Google maps to show the user the exact location.
  4. 4. Other uses of GPS• Google applications which use GPS on your phone to locate buildings closest to you (shops, toilets, hotels etc)• GPS Anti-theft vehicle systems• Phone tracking devices (children, stolen)• Monitoring the movement of a person (ie employee)or object (mail package)• GPS can call for help if a car airbag is deployed or send roadside assistance to a location if your car is broken down. Youtube
  5. 5. Google Earth• Google Earth is a virtual globe, map and geographical information program. It maps the Earth by the superimposing images obtained from satellite imagery and aerial photography Google Maps• Google Maps is an online version of Google Earth. It contains more mapping functionality and less geographical data. It contains route taking oprtions
  6. 6. So what exam question?• Using GPS locators in phone apps when designing. Definitely a current and emerging technology to use.• For websites, having links to Google Maps on your site and having a strong Google Map presence. Ensuring when a user looks for local businesses using Google Maps, yours comes up.• Definition of GPS, how it works and how organisations can use GPS as navigation and tracking devices.
