3. INTRODUCTION
Since the premise of globalization has come about new
technologies have come about over the centuries to connect the
world, from the invention of the planes, boats, printing
press, phones, and the internet.
All these technologies made it possible to be more connected
through transportation, communication, and spreading
knowledge. Over time they have all been enhanced by new
technology to further our connection where we now have mobile
phones with wireless internet that allow us to connect to the
whole world through one small device.
Many debate now whether technology really is improving our
connection with one another or is it creating isolation and
neurosis now?
4. EFFECTS OF ISOLATION
As stated before when technologies first came about it was to
bring connection between people all around the world but now
its being seen to cause isolation.
the sense of isolation that is coming about is not so much being
completely isolated like on a island but rather social isolation
between one another were physical interaction is becoming less
apparent. Such as friends texting rather going to physical see
each or even having a verbal conversation which is casing
sociality to lose the physical communication skill between one
another.
5. EFFECTS OF NEUROSIS
Neurosis can be defined as “ a relative mild personality disorder
typifies by excessive anxiety or indecision and a degree of social
or interpersonal maladjustment.” (Dictionary.com, 2013)
Today technology is continuously creating more virtual worlds
and societies through social networking, video games etc…
with these technologies they allow us to hide behind them when
interacting with someone causing anxieties to develop when
people go out into the real world with no technologies to hide
behind.
6. TECHNOLOGIES CAUSING ISOLATION / NEUROSIS
The technologies that have come about over the last 40 years or
so to cause isolation and neurosis have been those that brought
virtual worlds and mass information sharing and connection
between people. These technologies today are the
phones/smartphones, video games, the internet, and social
networking which now shape our society.
7. SMARTPHONES / MOBILE PHONES
The invention of smartphones / mobile phones can be consider one
of the great inventions like the printing press or automobile as it as
allowed us to stay connected any where we are to communication
with one another and the power of the internet.
However great it is it has become our social escape well we are out
in society to always be connect to friends and family. This causes
the physical social interactions between people to disappear.
8. VIDEO GAMES
Video games have become a massive entertainment tool let us
dive into our own fantasies and amazing adventures in a virtual
world. It has become an addictive pass time for many but has
brought Side effects with such as false senses of achievement
causing people to forgot get ambitions and achievement in the
real world. It has also created actual isolation for some to hide at
home from social issues or cause people to become every inactive
by being stuck in these virtual worlds as an escape from their
own lives. This can have an effect to cause neurosis by being
stuck in those virtual worlds cause u to change your thinking of
how everything is.
9. INTERNET AND SOCIAL NETWORKING
The internet one of the most powerful tools for anything and
was the platform in creating social networking sites both which
now are part of our lives every day now. The internet and social
networks have been big contributors to causing social isolation
and neurosis because just like mobile phones they have allowed
us to stay connect to everyone and thing such as Facebook were
you can communicate with family, friends, or even strangers
without physically interacting with that person all losing social
skills in the process. According to Social Networking Watch
“Total usage among U.S. adults is up from 67% in December
2012 to 72% in May 2013” ( Dan Farber, 2013). With numbers
increasing like that social interactions non existent .
10. CONCLUSION
Although these technologies have allowed to world to become
connected through means such as the internet and mobile
phones, society needs to notice the effects that it is causing on
social isolation and neurosis and be carful to not lose our
societies into a virtual world that could cause human interaction
as whole to become non existent.
