5. Gas Storage
• The demand for natural gas often fluctuates.
• One winter may be colder than another. For thirty years, we have been
storing gas: when the demand is small, then the supply will increase; when
there is high demand, it will decrease.
• Furthermore, it is always sensible to have a gas supply as this guarantees
less dependence on others, for example in the event of a disaster which
would increase the demand for gas.
• Storing gas underground is possible in old natural gas fields or in tanks
especially built for this purpose.

Challenge / question
• Our client has underground gas
storage facilities.
• He requires two systems: a
system that pumps gas into the
ground and one that pumps the
gas out.
• The client requires for the
compressors that pump the gas
into the ground to create
pressure of up to 225 bar.
• Our challenge is to design gas
coolers that will work with this
high pressure.

Our solution
• In order to pump gas into the ground at
225 bar, we designed and applied
special constructions for the air-cooled
coolers to cool the gas.
• We also successfully applied these
constructions to other pressure stages.
As systems for underground gas
storage are often located in rural
environments, strict sound regulations
apply for the coolers.
• Therefore, we developed special
noiseless constructions.
• We continuously invest in new
techniques, which enables us to be
able to meet the future demand of
even quieter coolers.
