Brooklyn Community Arts & Media High School Graphic Fact Sheet

  1. 1. 3 1 2 1. BCAM offers a “University of Hip Hop,” an extensive hip hop music and dance program that allows students to study the hip hop culture while expressing themselves through the popular style. 2. In an attempt to provide students with the knowledge to not only consume, but produce every form of media, BCAM provides photography courses to integrate the academic study of the me- dia with the creative component of photography. A professional film maker is currently making a documentary, in which she has partnered with 10 students allowing them to gain hands-on ex- perience. 5 3. BCAM published two books of student writing and artwork and 4 students wrote and created six short films featured on its website 5 and YouTube. The school is developing a "professional prepara- tory model," integrating academics steeped in an inquiry model where students push to connect what they're studying with real life and real world issues. 4. BCAM partners with local artists and projects such as Bang-on-a -can, a contemporary music group. Next year, the hope is to push students to use their talents to solve important community prob- lems, as well as to earn a living. 5. BCAM teamed up with the Hip-Hop Theater Festival in New York, partnering with hip-hop artists and a film and production team; students edited, wrote, and produced the whole film. The film focuses on the violence and racism that the students experi- ence on a daily bases. Check out the film at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKrqbjfpTmA
