  1. 1. Prophecy in the Local Church
  2. 2. 1 Corinthians 12 1 Corinthians 141 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want 1 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift ofyou to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were prophecy.2 For those who speak in a tongue do not speak to other people but topagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. 3 Butidols. 3 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by those who prophesy speak to people for their strengthening, encouragement andthe Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is comfort. 4 Those who speak in a tongue edify themselves, but those whoLord,” except by the Holy Spirit. prophesy edify the church. 5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes would rather have you prophesy. Those who prophesy are greater than those whothem. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There speak in tongues, unless they interpret, so that the church may be edified.are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is 6 Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will Ithe same God at work. be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the instruction?7 Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the pipe orcommon good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction inwisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same the notes? 8 Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready forSpirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of battle? 9 So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, howhealing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into theprophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another air. 10 Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them isspeaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the without meaning. 11 If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, Iinterpretation of tongues.11 All these are the work of one and the am a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker is a foreigner to me. 12 So it is withsame Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try to excel in those that build up thedetermines. church.12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts 13 For this reason those who speak in a tongue should pray that they may interpretform one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one what they say. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind isSpirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free unfruitful. 15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with mynot made up of one part but of many. understanding. 16 Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can the15 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not others, who are now put in the same situation as an inquirer, say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since they do not know what you are saying?17 You are giving thanksbelong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of well enough, but the others are not edified.the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I donot belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 But in the church Iof the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand wordsof hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense in a tongue.of smell be? 18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every 20 Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but inone of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one your thinking be adults. 21 In the Law it is written:part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but “With other tonguesone body. and through the lips of foreigners21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head I will speak to this people, cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, those but even then they will not listen to me,parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and the says the Lord.”parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And 22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers;the parts that are un-presentable are treated with special prophecy, however, is not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 So if the whole churchmodesty, 24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and inquirers or unbelievers comeBut God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 24 But if an unbeliever or anthat lacked it, 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and arethat its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part brought under judgment by all, 25 as the secrets of their hearts are laid bare. So theysuffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”rejoices with it. 26 What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or anit. 28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up. 27 Ifprophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all and someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keepapostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work quiet in the church; let them speak to themselves and to God.miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Doall interpret? 31 Now eagerly desire the greater gifts.
