T12 To T8 Lighting Retrofits

 1. 1. Lighting and Energy Efficient Upgrades www.BrightIdeasLightingCo.com 208-378-1889
 2. 2. T12 Fluorescent Lighting

Rapidly being phased out in favor of T8 or T5s.

Typically operate on inefficient magnetic ballast

Energy Policy Act of 2005 forbids sale of magnetic T12 ballasts as of July 1, 2010

Probably still close to 40% of fluorescent lighting in Boise metro today, even higher in smaller towns outside Treasure Valley.

 3. 3. T12 replacement options

Cheapest option will be to retrofit fixture – change out ballast and bulbs to T8 lights.

Lithonia Relight T5 kit allows some fixtures to be easily converted from T12 to 2 lamp F28 T5s. Higher costs than T8 retrofit. Over 60% energy reduction possible.

 4. 4. T8s as alternative to T12

Can be “retrofitted” to current T12 fixtures.

No need for new fixtures or changes to fixture configuration

Approximately 30-35% more efficient than T12s. Use electronic ballasts.

Electronic ballasts run quieter and cooler than electromagnetic.

 5. 5. T8s as alternative to T12

Much higher lumens per watt than T12 – approx 90 lumens per watt, T12 around 60.

Produces more light than 34-watt T12, while using less energy

Higher color rendering index (low 80s for T8 vs. low 60s for T12)

Standard for new construction since year 2000 time frame (Idaho)

 6. 6. T12 to T8 retrofitting -Delamping

Delamping- using less T8 lamps than T12s.

Example - 2 T8 lamps in fixture that was previously a 3 lamp or 4 lamp T12.

Advantages are increased energy savings, bigger Idaho Power rebates, lower costs to customer

 7. 7. What if your business already has T8 lighting??

ANSWER – Reduced wattage T8 light bulbs.

Come in 30, 28, and 25 watt versions.

Comparable light levels to 700 series light bulbs

Slightly more expensive than 700 series lamps, but last longer.

 8. 8. Reduced Wattage T8 light bulbs

Idaho Power currently offers 50 cents per bulb rebate.

Rebate good whether replacing T12s or full wattage T8 lamps

Not for use below 60 degrees

Some reported problems with striations in lamp.
