2. Painting Metal and Other Difficult Surfaces
Metal, vinyl, and coats of old paint can all present
difficult surfaces to paint over. Frequent problems
include paint peeling off of metal surfaces and
coats of old paint, as well as vinyl siding that
buckles after it is repainted.
3. Peeling
Poor adhesion to surfaces is often caused by lack of
preparation. In order to prevent or repair paint peeling from
metal, first start with the bare metal. Use a corrosion-resistant
primer, then apply high-quality acrylic latex paint. Another
reason paint lifts off of its base is the use of water-based latex
paint over coats of old oil-based paint; oil and water don’t mix.
The best way to solve this incompatibility between paints is to
avoid it. Simply paint over an existing coat of oil-based paint
with a new layer of oil-based paint, not latex paint. As a
longer-lasting solution, however, scrape and sand off all the
old layers, and then prime the bare spots. Use a high-quality
latex paint to repaint the surface. This will also produce the
best-looking results.
4. Warped Vinyl Siding
Old vinyl siding sometimes buckles after receiving
a new coat of paint, which also makes the paint
peel. In these cases, the paint color used for
repainting usually was darker than the original
color, and the dark paint soaked up the sun’s heat
and conveyed it to the vinyl surface underneath,
causing the buckling. The best remedy for this
problem is to repaint using lighter shades of paint
than the original and to make sure that the paint is
high-quality, so it has increased ability to expand
and contract.
