  1. 1. Dark ShadowsControlled assessmentQ: Investigate how far the trailer for Dark Shadows conformsto genre conventions.Sophiar Jack – 10TB
  2. 2. Why is Horror so popular? It appeals to a younger audience and gives anescape from reality that you can’t necessarily getfrom any other genre, the feeling of adrenalin. Youbecome completely engaged In the film and caneven leave you ‘On the edge of your seat’. Also, there is a wide variety this is created by the use ofhybrid/sub genres e.g. Slashers and Comedy likeScary movie. Also, some believe the pleasurecomes from the relief after.
  3. 3. Conventions• Cobwebs• Shadows• Blood/Red• Blue hues• Gothic architecture• Fire• Secrets• Death• Religion• Pale faces• Love• Tall Pines• Dark Magic• Vampires/Monsters/Ghosts• Suicide• Madness• October/Halloween• Abandoned buildings• Witches• Murders• Screams• Mist• Eerie music• Flickering lights• Wolf howls• Cliffs• Crystal Chandeliers• Forests (Empty)• Full moons• Pumpkins• Spells• Coffins• Mice• Long corridors• Candles• Creaky Gates• Mobs with fire• Hell• Family• Night time
  4. 4. Why are Sub-genres necessary?Genres work because the audience can recognise them fromtheir convections very easily so they know what to expect. We have genres so we can easily categorise.A sub-genre is a version of the main genre that may containnew elements. Well eventually the main genre will getboring if they conform to the same pattern as every otherone of its type so to stay interesting and not repetitive theyuse sub-genres. This creates so many new ideas and storylines that are waiting to be created. Also, a completely newaudience and the old one is still retained. An example is Paranormal activity also that uses a hand heldcamera to show the victims point of view. That is a Docu-horror…e.g. Say someone was unwilling to trya new genre but if it was mixed withone they previously liked they may bewilling to try something new.
  5. 5. VampiresPast Representations (1922) New Representations (2012)Old vampires were feared more they could make a girl scream forher life just at the sight of them as they were hideous now they areseen as beautiful caring creatures who actually care and savehumans rather than instantly drink their blood! In sunlight theaudience may have expected them to incinerate but now in 2012they glisten… However blood has been a factor that has not reallychanged they still do however now they prefer animal blood the fearfactor is actually non-existent nowadays. Rather than be a villainthey play the role of a hero (Just Cullen’s not Victoria’s clan). Nowthe younger generation rather than the older enjoy these movies asthey have been made to be more realistic and they are set socasually (e.g. In a school) so it makes it more appealable to ‘Tweens’and aspirational.
  6. 6. Movie TrailersTrailers usually only show the best parts of themovie to get the viewer engaged, they areusually not in a chronological order and theyusually don’t give out the most important partsin the film. They also use star vehicles so theviewer will know what to expect based on theprevious movies they have been in or justbecause they really like that celebrity.
  7. 7. Movie TrailersThe typical layout is a voice over of the maincharacter/protagonist or narrative from the moviewhich begins to tell the story but not to reveal theplot then it shows all the action using e.g. jumpcuts, high tension music and also leave the viewerwith questions they may want answers to, to enticethem to watch the film. In that section they mayintroduce the antagonist. Finally, leave you with thefilms name, the information (e.g. the release) andthe main stars name . This is all used to createinstant interest for the film before it is released. The example I used was Skyfall.
  8. 8. Dark Shadows Movie TrailerThe trailer begins with the main characterintroducing himself, he also happens to be JohnnyDepp the recognition of him gives the viewer asense of safety and gratification as they may knowhim from other movies and have an idea of thetypes of movies he is in, what to expect andwhether they will like it or not.As the trailer continues it keeps to the very gothictheme including love and magic (the witch),supernatural beings. Then as he is exploring hisnew surroundings it begins to include humourwhich subverts from the original theme.
  9. 9. Dark Shadows Movie Trailer (2)So we begin to see this isnt just a gothic horror it’s ahybrid, it is mixed with humour it gives the movie awhole new perspective and may not be theexpectation of most people. This almost refreshesthe whole genre and gives the viewer somethingnew and original to watch. Also, it may attractpeople from other genres to watch something thatthey may not have before because of this mix andcreates a whole new community. That all doesn’tconform to original conventions of the Horror genreas rather than just fear it also includes a sense ofhappiness.
  10. 10. Twilight: New MoonThis is a fantasy romance it creates a form ofescapism to it’s viewer as it is not something thatmay happen in real life. As the main characters arequite young this obviously appeals to a youngeraudience we see as New Moon is a PG and Darkshadows is a 15. Dark Shadows has oldercharacters, that may show there is a link betweenthe characters and the age of the viewers. However, the trailer doesn’t conform to typical Horrorconvections as some scenes are filmed in the dayand convectional Vampires are more reclusive andlike to be alone rather than go to school.
  11. 11. Twilight: New MoonAlso, the Vampires are at war with the Werewolfs so in allthe fights have a lot of energy and have a high intensitywhich gives the audience pleasure as it evokes a newemotion with all the adrenaline increase. It also has quite a bit of action and the struggle of love andthe disapproval of the community of them being together. That gives the viewer a new personal relationship with thecharacters as they may sympathise with their situationfulfilling their need for love and belonging.Even the simple fact that the Vampire and human canmanage to fall in love completely subverts from the originalgenre and Vampires are meant to be loved, just feared.
  12. 12. Twilight: New MoonBrown representnature so this mayshow their lovewas almost meantto be.The movie iscalled newmoon mayshow this isthe beginningofsomething…The fact he isholding her mayshow he is theprotector. His hand is spreadout quite beastlythis may show themonster in him. Their lips areboth red andred representsblood anddanger so thiscouldforeshadow themovie. The background isvery misty andunclear this mayrepresent secrets.
  13. 13. Comparing Trailers…Twilight:• More romance and is slightly moredramatic• This is aimed at a younger audience asthe violence is very pg.• This subverts because it is mostly aromance and the only gothic vampirefeatures that are used are Fangs andwerewolf transformations.Dark Shadows:• Has more comedy however had someromance.• This may be target at a olderaudience as it is based in the pastand refers to people like ‘AliceCooper’.In the early days of cinema society wasn’t as desensitized as we are, politics mayhave played a part as very graphic things may not have always been showncasually on TV. They may have been used to seeing happy movies but horrorsmay have been a shock to the system and may not have been their expectationsbut people may have liked the shock and may have gotten a new sense ofpleasure when it was over as repetition of the same idea gives no gratificationso that is where hybrids and sub-genres are useful. New technologys have alsomad it easier to access new things that may be either good or bad.
  14. 14. Gothicarchitecturewith follows themovies genre. The low anglesshot makes thecharacter seemmore dominant. The Shadows create aslight eeriness and mayrepresent there aresecrets in the movie. His costume is typicalof the gothic genreepically with vampirese.g. Count Dracula.Theuninvitingbuilding andthe lowangle shotmakes thebuilding lookbigger andfearful.
  15. 15. Their costumes aretypical of a fairy-tale.This will appeal topeople who likeromantic movies as theyare kissing. The shadows createa darkness that mayshow somethingbad may happen. How ever that maycontrast with the settingas it’s relatively clear bluesky.
  16. 16. The fact there isonly light aboveher may showshe is powerfulThe low angle shotshows herdominance overus. The blue huesgive the viewer aclod feeling. The use ofpathetic fallacymay change thereaders emotionsto a very grimone. The fact youcant see muchof the rest of thescene mayrepresentsecrets.Again the lightcoming fromthe cauldronalso showswhere thepower/magic isarising from.
  17. 17. Again the bluehues create avery cold feeling.Gothicarchitecturein both stillstypical of thegenre.“Fire cleansesand purifies.” Sothis is almostcleansing thetown of the evilvampire that’swhy the mobhave fire.(I really liked this)http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080306184125AABMoVcThe Ghostmayrepresentcontrol as thegirl isfollowing it.The fact he isalone in thisscene may showhe is alonefacing this mob.
