Could Robert Griffin III be moving to Dallas? Brady Speers takes an inside look at the possibility of the former Baylor star and Heisman winner taking his talents to the Cowboys. With fact based insight Brady takes a detailed look at Robert Griffin III joining the Cowboys for the 2015 season.
2. Could It Be Possible?
• Could it be possible? The face of the
Washington Redskins and the reason why
the franchise gave up three first round
picks and a second round selection in the
2012 NFL draft could be looking at moving
to Dallas
• While it may be a bit out there as a
possibility because of the division rivalry,
there are a few plausible reasons why
Griffin could be representing the Lonestar
State as the Cowboys quarterback. With
numerous reasons as to why the Redskins
should release Griffin, signals point more
and more to the former Heisman winner to
make the move. For Robert Griffin III to
move a few key variables will need to fall
into place between now and next season
3. Kirk Cousins Has A Breakout
Year With The Redskins
• Cousins has only played in two games this year
thus far, however Griffin’s backup may not hold
the second string title much longer. Cousins
ranks fourth in QB rating among passers who’ve
attempted more than 50 throws so far this
season. He is averaging 338.5 yards per game
with 6 touchdowns and one interception. If
Cousins maintains his standout performances
throughout the rest of the season, and even win
enough of his next few games to keep the
Redskins in line for the playoffs. With a limited
time for Cousins to prove himself before Griffin
returns in about six week, head coach Jay
Gruden will have a tough time sitting Cousins
back on the bench
• After Griffin suffered a debilitating knee injury in
the 2012 NFC Wild Card game, he has failed to
perform as he had in the Pro Bowl during his
rookie season. If Cousins continues on his
progressive path towards a Pro Bowl appearance
and an NFC playoff berth, Griffin’s presence in
Washington may be in jeopardy
4. Dan Snyder Agrees
• Even if Cousins continues
succeeding and is eventually the
clear choice for the 2015 starting
quarterback position, Washington’s
Owner Dan Snyder still needs to
sign off on everything. Ever since
Griffin arrived in Washington,
Snyder has always been in his
corner and proclaimed that Griffin is
exactly what the Redskins need to
be victorious. Bruce Allen, the
Redskins President, and Jay
Gruden will need persuade Snyder
to give up the (former) starting
quarterback to pursue other
options.
5. Tony Romo Remains Broken
• Tony Romo, the Cowboys starting QB is currently 34
years old and is really starting to show it. With multiple
back surgeries, missed practices, and poor game
performance Romo could be looking at retirement. Even
with his best game performance in Week 3 against the St.
Louis Rams, the looming questions about the
quarterback’s health is a giant red flag.
• Even though Romo keeps getting hit and knocked down,
he keeps getting up. He is definitely a tough player, but
how long can he keep it up? With the continued support
from Cowboys General Manager Jerry Jones, Romo
received a six year, $108 million extension.
• If Romo’s back issues continue and he is unable
complete the season, a retirement or potential release in
the offseason suddenly becomes a possibility. Being
released from the team could prove quite problematic.
With the remaining cap charges from the restructuring of
Romo’s deal this offseason would cost the Cowboys
almost $10 million more against the team’s 2015 salary
cap than keeping him on the roster. With no real options
in sight for a replacement the Cowboys definitely need to
explore other opportunities as a new starting QB, having
passed up Johnny Manziel last season and the mistake of
starting Brandon Weeden.
6. The 2015 Franchise QB Class
The best QB prospects for the 2015 NFL Draft are UCLA’s Brett Hundley and Oregon’s Marcus Mariota. It’s still very early
and there can be plenty of other top prospects emerging. However with Tampa Bay, Houston, and St. Louis most likely
thinking about a new QB due to their current situations, the chance of the Cowboys acquiring a rookie quarterback who
could start in Week 1 in 2015 is extremely low, given the competition for Hundley and Mariota.
Even though Griffin has had numerous injuries in his young career in the NFL, he’d still likely have the upperhand against
any quarterback beyond Mariota and Hundley.
7. • Jerry Jones, President, Owner, and
General Manager of the Dallas
Cowboys, got a front row seat to Robert
Griffin’s performance in Week 17 of 2012
when the Redskins denied the Cowboys
from winning the NFC East. Despite his
recent injuries, Griffin would have a
major name appeal for the Cowboys
franchise
• If the Cowboys offered the Redskins an
offer they couldn't refuse would that be
enough to convince Snyder and Allen to
send Griffin to one of their most bitter
rivals? Considering Griffin is only under
his current contract through 2015, with a
team option in 2016, it’s hard to see why
not.
