In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products
Setting/ LocationOur geographical location for the opening is our local town, which in the classichorror films, who be the main setting for a zombie attack as it gives the sense of littleescape and the feeling of characters being trapped, but in more modern filmsaudiences see more bigger cities, this can lead to a more action pace film as largeareas allow for more narrative. However for low budget films a small setting isconventional because it reduces costs, and this is a factor we have taken into accountby using our own town and a single setting for the character’s home.
EditingEditing played an important process in the opening scene as it allowed for me to makea more authentic time setting for the film, as we can see the opening sequence takesus from day to night and the editing allowed for this, as night time is a usual horrorsetting. Also the sound used at this moment is an upbeat lively soundtrack which isironic for the narrative. A typical aspect is that I have used quick cuts for the latterscenes when the infected is shown this is in order to build suspense.
TitleIt’s very typical of most movies to display their title during an opening sequence towards the start ofa film. Our film incorporates this aspect into our product by showing out title after the introductorycredits. The title itself is a mix of both genres used in the film, “Dead” relating to the horror elementand ‘Lazy’ linking with the comedy. What is typical about the title and its style is that its coloured red, referring to the horror convention of blood, and in a serious font to set the atmosphere of a serioushorror. However, the “Lazy” of the title is coloured orange and styled in a curved, childish font whichhighlights the comedy genre and acts as a joke for the audience’s attention. Music in films oftenreflects the film’s genre and it was difficult to find a Comedy/Horror soundtrack for our openingtitles, but we chose an upbeat tune as the backing to add ironic comedy to the film but to not overshadow the horror our title is show in a darken scene relating back to horror.
Characters- RichardThe character Richard can be seen as a typical character role in any comedy film because herepresents the day-to-day slacker that doesn’t intend to do much but is forced into doing something. However he does bring some unconventional behaviour to the film because, from his console gamingexperience, he knows what the pair of them should be doing and throughout the film, will often tell ofgaming techniques that refer to zombie survival.Characters- OwenOwen is portrayed as a workaholic, who in any films is unconventional because the majority of filmsare used for escapism from examples such as the workplace, but Owen is the character that brings theworking-lifestyle into the film and this contradicts the whole representation of Richard and hislifestyle which adds for a comedy duo.
CostumeCostume is a primary relation between a character’s attitude and behaviour, itsconvention in films that clothing reflects the character and the genre, for example inan action film the main character is often shown wearing tight clothing or visible bodyshot as it shows that their the hero. Our opening shows Owen wearing smart, suit-likeclothing which is conventional for a hard-working character to wear. Theunconventional aspect would be from seeing Owen as the main/ first character to theintroduction of Richard who is seen wearing lounge pants and T-shirt which is odd ina horror film but is perfect for comedy.
Camera WorkOur camera work is typical of films under the genre Comedy, Horror because we useshort, close up shots of the elements that are important to the story, for example whenwe see a close-up shot of the infected entering the house which is meant to build upsuspense and shock. We also see a number of shots that are focused on thecharacter, for instance the first few scenes are all about the introduction of a characterand this is typical of most films as it builds audience’s attention with the film. Thelighting is untypical for horror films but since we are incorporating comedy into thefilm, brighter lighting always audiences to feel more open with the film.
PropsProps were important in our opening as they help the audience understand more ofthe narrative, a key prop we used was the leaflet warning of the infection outbreak asthis supports the narrative and as well of informing the character it also helps informthe audience. It is common in most comedy horror films to use media platform toinform the narrative as it helps create the comedy of no-one noticing something wesee almost every day (the news, leaflets etc). Also, to portray that the story is about 2average people, we have used props in the home environment such as the lettersOwen sorts through, this is because it can relate to our target audience.
StoryOur story is typical of zombie films as it’s orientated around an outbreak of some sorts and the storyfollows characters situations in an attempt to escape, we have taken the same context but arefocusing on just 2 characters with possibly different priorities. We haves used the 2 characters as achance to support the comedy genre by producing their personalities as polar opposites, this cangive the audience to side with character’s perspective and follow their individual paths, this is anunconventional element as a creation of difference is stated instead of everybody following the same.Comedy and Horror are 2 genres that are built around 2 different contexts, however in most comedyhorror films the main narrative usually involves zombies or some fictional being, and this is becausedirectors can easily manipulate the narrative with fictional elements that is key in creating morecomedy.
Special EffectsSpecial Effects in our opening are primarily referring to the zombie make-up effectswe used on the infected being. It is very typical to use make-up effects to portrayzombies in films because it allows for authenticity. We used the common whitening ofthe face with darkened eyes and blood stains around the face; we wanted to follow themore typical look because it’s easier for the audience to understand that it is azombie-type being.
