This power point is for a class I did to help people understand how the Digestive system works; what goes wrong and how to get it back into balance for better health. Dr. Mary Born, ND www.BornForHealth.com

Editor's Notes
The digestive tract is a muscular tube coupled with a whole host of primary and secondary organs (i.e. liver/pancreas) as well.
Digestion actually begins with the first thought of food or smell of food! This stimulates the stomach to immediately produce HCL to be ready for the food that is coming.
Picture of digestive system. Esophagus, stomach, small intestines, large intestines. Liver, pancreas, gallbladder. Stomach churns food into “chyme” using HCL.
Some components of food are initially absorbed in the stomach such as sugar.
The sphincter is a gateway to small intestines. It determines when food has been mixed well enough to pass. All this is to enhance absorption.
Pancreas has a double duties both for digestion (amylase) and hormones (insulin/glucagon). Liver is the largest organ in the body. Liver stores fats, carbohydrates, proteins, and vitamins. The Liver also neutralizes poisons. It has over 500 duties everyday. The Liver can function with 90% of it removed!
The ileo-cecal valve or gateway prevents backflow of material. Keeping toxins out of the small intestines. Located at the same area as your appendix.

The sigmoid is a high percentage area of disease. Encouraging and promoting regular bowel movements keeps this area healthy.
Absorption is the critical process to ensuring proper nutrition of the body. Anything interferring with absorption interferes with energy, new tissues, etc.
One of the most prevalent problems and rarely discussed among current health care providers.
Peristalsis is not the only method of movement. There is segmentation as well. There is 3-4 mass movements internal everyday. Transit time with beet juice requires drinking only beet juice and then looking for red color upon exit. Time that from mouth to rectum. Usually 24 hours.
Doctors tend to prescribe laxatives that are habitual or fibers containing dyes that are known carcinogens instead of considering the human digestive capacity. Once problems develop and laxatives no longer work, drugs and surgery are the next course of action.
Doctors believe we are born with enough enzymes. They don’t account for shelf-life foods, toxins, and heat which work against our natural supply of enzymes. Foods like fruits have naturally occurring enzymes to help ripen. If picked too early or cooked/canned those foods lose enzymes which adds a burden to our system.
Probiotics or “friendly flora” are found throughout the entire digestive system but mostly in the Colon.
To date we have 11 well known probiotic strains we know of, although many more will be studied and may be recommended in the future.
Discuss what might happen here with C-sections and bottle feeding vs. the above.
Prebiotics are “fructooligosaccharides” or food for probiotics.
Hiatus is misdiagnosed as heart or ulcer because the symptoms are remarkably similar.
Mealtime should be centered around just mealtime. Relaxing, family, candles, no TV, prayer, no distractions, and slow down. Talking on a cell phone in traffic while eating, is an example of emotional eating. Eating angry or scared! Do people eat to satisfy emotions?
Even though we age and make less HCL, we tend to eat like we did when we were younger. Buffets are an example. We overeat but may not have the HCL to keep up.
Stealing calcium from your bones has been linked to Osteoporosis.
Good fats include flax seed oils, black currant oils, borage oils, grape seed oils, fish oils, avocadoes, etc.
Chewing food 25 times allows the body to send a signal through the Vagus nerve from the stomach to the brain. Tells us to stop eating. So if we eat too fast, this signal doesn't have time to act!
Good place to inform the public about reverse osmosis NSP water systems.
Detoxification is also referred to as: Cleansing or Purging. Cascara Sagrada is also known as Sacred Tree Bark and is non-habitual as a natural laxative.
An example today is the problem “irritable bowel disorder”. Discuss the above. SO what makes our bowels “irritable”?
If never “cleansed” before it is appropriate to recommend doing more than one box.
Parasites are not unique only to third world countries. Americans also come in contact with parasites daily. They are in air, water, food, surfaces etc. Since most parasites are microscopic in nature (70%), we don’t always “see” them.
Remember that we need around 10X 100 trillion of these friendly flora for optimum health of the digestive system.
Most fibers sold over the counter contain “dyes”. Dyes are a known carcinogen.
