  • Helpful Do’s and Don’ts
    • Do have separate policies or driver manuals for owner-operators and employee drivers.
    • Do make sure that all employees understand the difference between an independent contractor and employee.
    • Do audit company forms for terminology which should not be used with respect to owner-operators.
    • Do not provide owner-operators with equipment, uniforms, or other products free of charge. It is acceptable to initially pay for the drivers expenses and then deduct them from their compensation as written in the lease agreement.
    • Do not provide light duty work opportunities to an independent contractor that has been injured and prevented from driving.
  • Renewal Process
    • Start Process 3 months in advance.
    • Use at least two agents (one being incumbent).
    • Have agents bring two or three insurance quotes but keep maximum to five total.
    • Agents need Loss Runs for last 3 yrs., Drivers list, Insurance Questionnaire.
