US trains Gulf air forces for war with Iran Last Updated: 12:48pm BST 01/10/2007 The American air force is working with military leaders from the Gulf to train and prepare Arab air forces for a possible war with Iran, The Sunday Telegraph can reveal. An air warfare conference in Washington last week was told how American air chiefs have helped to co-ordinate intelligence-sharing with Gulf Arab nations and organise combined exercises designed to make it easier to fight together. Gen Michael Mosley, the US Air Force chief of staff, used the conference to seek closer links with allies whose support America might need if President George W Bush chooses to bomb Iran. Pentagon air chiefs have helped set up an air warfare centre in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) where Gulf nations are training their fighter pilots and America has big bases. It is modelled on the US Air Force warfare centre at Nellis air force base in Nevada.Jordan and the UAE have both taken part in combined exercises designed to make sure their air forces can fly, and fight, together and with American jets. Oak Lawn Schools Cancel Holiday Traditions School District To Discuss Cancellation Or Renaming Of Holiday Celebrations At Emergency Meeting (CBS) OAK LAWN, Ill. A southwest suburban school district has taken action, responding to the concerns of a Muslim parent. But now, as CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reports, other parents are angry that traditional school holidays will be renamed or even eliminated. "That does not represent all the Muslims, all of the Arabs at that school," said Qais Nofel, the father of a student in Ridgeland School District 122. There was some heated discussion between parents outside Columbus Manor Elementary School in Oak Lawn on Friday. The thought of no more traditional holiday celebrations has many parents really upset. For now, children in Ridgeland School District 122 will celebrate fall festival instead of Halloween and winter festival instead of Christmas. Brenda Elvidge said, "It's not fair to our kids. This is America and that's an American tradition." The decision affects the children at four elementary schools in Oak Lawn and one junior high school in Bridgeview. The district has a 30 percent Arab-American population, many of whom practice Islam. The superintendent says the reason for the change in tradition comes after one parent wanted Ramadan decorations put up inside Columbus Manor Elementary. They were taken down.

Saratoga Prostitute Snorted Cocaine Off 2-Month-Old Son, Police Say October 1, 2007 - 6:44PM A 37-year-old prostitute from Saratoga Springs was arrested by Schenectady police Monday morning after a sting operation and subsequent investigation found that the woman performed sexual acts and consumed drugs in front of her children. Wendy Cook of 332 Caroline Street was arrested for prostitution after offering to perform sex on an undercover police officer for money Monday, said Schenectady police. After arresting her, detectives learned that Cook's two children had been left with friends in a car nearby. Shortly thereafter, police found Cook's five-year-old daughter and eight-week-old son in Cook's car with two adults. As detectives continued their investigation, they learned that Cook had been out all night smoking crack and snorting cocaine while in the company of her children. Cook performed oral sex on at least two johns early Monday morning while her children were awake with her in the car's back seat. Additionally, Cook snorted cocaine off her eight-week-old son's stomach while breastfeeding him. As a result of these findings, police also charged Cook with five counts of endangering the welfare of a child and with one felony count of reckless endangerment. CBS

Tech whiz arrested in child sex sting September 28, 2007 17:40PM A rising star in Cleveland's World Wide Web galaxy faces up to 42 years in prison if convicted of charges accusing him of using his computer savvy to angle for sex with a child. A Cuyahoga County grand jury indicted Prashant Chopra, 29, Friday on charges of importuning, attempted rape, attempted kidnapping and other counts. Chopra thought he had arranged a liaison on the West Side with a 12-year-old girl, said Assistant County Prosecutor Brendan Sheehan. But the "girl" Chopra was conversing with on line was a law-enforcement officer, authorities said. Agents arrested Chopra when he arrived at the rendezvous in his black 2006 Mercedes-Benz, Sheehan said. Chopra, who lives in a $1.1 million Cleveland Heights mansion, is jailed awaiting arraignment next week. According to media and Web biographies, Chopra is an Internet-technology consultant and entrepreneur at a Cleveland-based global nonprofit called the CampusEAI Consortium. It helps universities, governments and businesses incorporate the latest Internet business technologies. Chopra also helped develop the Open Student Television Network, a Cleveland-based entity that webcasts college-student-produced programs globally. Probation officer says she had sex with teen A Brazos County juvenile probation officer was charged Monday with sexual assault after she admitted to having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old boy who was on probation, police said. College Station police said Sarah Celeste Farmer, 29, and the teenage boy had been engaged in the sexual relationship since January 2007. The pair had sex at the boy's home after his father and step-mother had gone to sleep, a police spokesman said, citing court documents. Assistant Juvenile Services Director Collin Coker said Monday that Farmer was no longer employed as a probation officer following an internal investigation. He said she had worked as a probation officer for nearly a year, but he declined to provide her last day of work. He also would not discuss the circumstances surrounding her departure. Coker described Farmer as a "good employee" and said he was surprised to learn of the circumstances surrounding the criminal charges. Both Farmer and the boy admitted the affair to police when questioned, according to police reports. Farmer surrendered to authorities on Monday. She was charged with second-degree felony sexual assault, which is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to a $10,000. She was released from jail on $5,000 bail. She did not respond to an interview request left with her family. Farmer first met the boy in October 2006, while she was serving as shift supervisor in the Brazos County Juvenile Detention Center, according to court documents. He returned to the detention center in January 2007 and the relationship began a couple days after he was released from custody, police said. Investigators determined Farmer would call the boy's cell phone after arriving at his home. He then would sneak to the door and let her inside, police said. The boy told investigators he and Farmer had sex "several times" at his home. It was unclear Monday why the boy was in the juvenile detention center in October 2006, but police said his second stay was linked to charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and evading arrest. Coker would not say why the boy was placed on probation, nor would he say if Farmer had been the boy's probation officer.

Afghan farmers find alternative to opium: marijuana By Jon HemmingThu Sep 27, 7:20 AM ET As Afghanistan struggles to cut its raging opium production, aid workers try to find alternative crops, but for some former poppy farmers the choice was easy -- they planted marijuana instead. Afghanistan's opium crop topped all records this year, producing some 93 percent of the world's supply of the drug. But while there has been a sharp rise in poppy production in the troubled south, the drug crop has been eliminated in a growing number of provinces in the safer north of the country. Balkh province in the north was trumpeted as a success story -- from 7,000 hectares of poppies cultivated in 2006, it was declared opium-free in 2007 after strong local government action. But around the ancient citadel of Balkh, in fields where pink poppy flowers stood last year, jagged green marijuana stalks poke above other crops and in places whole cannabis fields produce a pungent aroma strong enough to be picked by passing motorists. The farmers are still cautious. "They are not my fields," said Shamseddin, surrounded by head-high cannabis plants in full flower. "I don't know who they belong to," he said, dropping a sickle to the ground and nudging it away with his foot. Others said they only planted marijuana to shield their cotton fields from livestock or that it was just a trial crop.
