    • Russia Russia to lend Venezuela $1 bln to buy Russian arms 17:42| 25 / 09 / 2008 MOSCOW , September 25 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will provide Venezuela with a $1 billion loan to buy Russian weapons, a Kremlin source said Thursday. "The Russian side has made the decision to extend to Venezuela a $1 billion loan for a military cooperation program," the source said ahead of a meeting between Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his Venezuelan counterpart, Hugo Chavez, who starts a two-day visit to Russia on Thursday. Between 2005 and 2007 Russia signed 12 contracts worth more than $4.4 billion to supply arms including fighter jets, helicopters and Kalashnikov assault rifles to Venezuela. Medvedev will meet with Chavez on Friday in the southern Urals city of Orenburg, the Kremlin said. This will be the presidents' second meeting after their talks in July in Moscow. Chavez's visit to Russia comes as a Russian naval task force sails to Venezuela for joint exercises, and after two Russian strategic bombers returned from the country last week following a patrol mission along the South American coast. The show of force by Russia, unprecedented since the Cold War, was condemned by the U.S. administration, with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice calling it "a dangerous game."
    • Got an idea to help the world? Here's $10 million (CNN) -- Got an idea that could change the world, or at least help a lot of people? Google wants to hear from you -- and they'll pay as much as $10 million to make your idea a reality. Google Inc. will award $10 million to solicit ideas it believes could benefit the world. To help celebrate its 10th birthday, the ambitious Internet giant is launching an initiative to solicit, and bankroll, fresh ideas it believes could have broad and beneficial impact on people's lives. Called Project 10^100 (pronounced "10 to the 100th"), Google's initiative will seek input from the public and a panel of judges in choosing up to five winning ideas, to be announced in February. Google announced the project live on CNN on Wednesday morning. "These ideas can be big or small, technology-driven or brilliantly simple -- but they need to have impact," said Google in a press release. "We know there are countless brilliant ideas that need funding and support to come to fruition." Ideas such as the Hippo Water Roller , which Google cited as the kind of concept the company would be interested in rewarding. Developed in Africa, where it is most used, the Hippo Water Roller is a barrel-shaped container, attached to a handle, that holds 24 gallons of water and can be rolled with little effort, like a wheelbarrow, making it easier for villagers on foot to transport critically needed fresh water to their homes People are encouraged to submit their ideas, in any of 25 languages, on http://www.project10tothe100.com/index.html through October 20. Entrants must briefly describe their idea and answer six questions, including, "If your idea were to become a reality, who would benefit the most and how?"

    • London's Olympic Park toilets to turn away from Mecca out of respect for Islamic law Daily Mail 24th September 2008 Toilet facilities are being built at London's Olympic Park so Muslims will not have to face Mecca while sitting on the loo. The Olympic Delivery Authority has said it wants to produce an ideal venue for people of all cultures, faiths, ages and abilities for the 2012 Games and beyond. The Islamic religion prohibits Muslims from facing the Kiblah - the direction of prayer - when they visit the lavatory. An artist's impression shows the proposed Olympic Park in use An ODA spokeswoman confirmed that a 'percentage of general toilets would not face Mecca' out of sensitivity. She could not say how many toilets would turn away from the East. Also as part of the design, special washing facilities will be linked to Islamic prayer rooms. It is not the first time toilets have changed direction to accommodate Muslims. Last year, thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money was used to ensure toilets at Brixton prison in London did not offend Islamic law. Muslim prisoners complained of having to sit sideways on toilets so as to not break code.
    • Mickey Mouse must die, says Saudi Arabian cleric Mickey Mouse is a corrupting influence and must die, a Muslim cleric has declared. Last Updated: 4:04PM BST  21  Sep 2008 Sheikh Muhammad Munajid claimed the mouse is "one of Satan's soldiers" and makes everything it touches impure. But he warned that depictions of the creature in cartoons such as Tom and Jerry, and Disney's Mickey Mouse, had taught children that it was in fact loveable. The cleric, a former diplomat at the Saudi embassy in Washington DC, said that under Sharia, both household mice and their cartoon counterparts must be killed. Mr Munajid was asked to give Islam's teaching on mice during a religious affairs programme broadcast on al-Majd TV, an Arab television network. According to a translation prepared by the Middle East Media Research Institute, an American press monitoring service, he said: "The mouse is one of Satan's soldiers and is steered by him. "If a mouse falls into a pot of food – if the food is solid, you should chuck out the mouse and the food touching it, and if it is liquid – you should chuck out the whole thing, because the mouse is impure. "According to Islamic law, the mouse is a repulsive, corrupting creature. How do you think children view mice today – after Tom and Jerry? "Even creatures that are repulsive by nature, by logic, and according to Islamic law have become wonderful and are loved by children. Even mice. "Mickey Mouse has become an awesome character, even though according to Islamic law, Mickey Mouse should be killed in all cases." Last month Mr Munajid condemned the Beijing Olympics as the "bikini Olympics", claiming that nothing made Satan happier than seeing females athletes dressed in skimpy outfits.   Daily Telegraph
    • Russian woman put on trial in Dubai for drinking juice in public   23.09.2008 Source: Pravda.Ru     A 28-year-old Russian female, who visited Dubai on a tourist visa, and a 30-year-old male citizen of Lebanon, a salesman in a local store, were put on trial for drinking juice in a public place in the daytime during Muslim fasting. The police caught the two people red-handed at a gas station in Dubai, Emirat.ru reports with reference to Gulf News . In accordance with the Federal Penal Code of the United Arab Emirates, a public intake of food and beverages during daytime hours of the month of Ramadan is forbidden by Article 313. The article stipulates the punishment in the form of either a monetary penalty – up to 2,000 dirhems ($555) – or even a term of up to one month in prison. The young people told the court that they were not Muslims and were thus unaware of the fact that their actions could be punishable. The court took the mitigating circumstances into consideration, but found the defendants guilty, since ignorance did not exclude responsibility. The court ruled that the young people must pay the fine of 1,000 dirhems ($278) each. The case became the first one in Dubai in violation of Article 313 since the beginning of the month of Ramadan on September 1.
    • Doctor convicted of giving patients breast massages - to cure their hair loss  Daily Mail   22nd September 2008 Leading hair consultant Praminder Mankoo told his victims they needed stress relieving massages to help with their scalp problems but instead groped their breasts under the guise of 'treatment'. After a two week trial, the father-of-four was found guilty in the Oxford Crown Court of three charges of sexual assault and one of indecent assault. Ms Franklin, of Windsor, Berkshire, said: 'He began to massage my shoulders and slowly his hand crept down until he had a full hold of my breast. Then he ripped off his coat and stripped naked. 'He pushed my face into his genitals and made a disgusting comment about seeking satisfaction,' she said. 'I was terrified but I knew I couldn't confront him because the door was locked, there was no one around.' When Ms Franklin tried to escape, she said Mankoo grabbed her face and tried to drag her head down. 'There was a point where I thought he was going to strangle me because he had his hands around my throat.' He finally let Ms Franklin go, but the ordeal was not quite over. As she hurriedly put her clothes back and made for the exit, Mankoo asked for payment, and said she needed to be booked in for another appointment. 'I couldn't believe it, but I nonchalantly paid up as though it was the most normal thing in the world.' Ms Franklin said when Mankoo was cautioned by police 10 years ago, she thought it would be the end of it. 'I couldn't believe it when I heard that he had continued to prey on innocent clients. 'Looking back I wish I had spoken publicly about it when it happened and maybe he could have been stopped earlier.' The court heard that Mankoo of Thame, Berkshire, would tell women to strip to their underwear to avoid getting massage oil on their clothes. He would then rub their scalp, neck and shoulders, and reach around to touch their breasts. One woman told how Mankoo had removed her bra and also massaged her thighs and feet. Keeping her eyes tightly shut during the experience, out of fear, she opened them to see Mankoo dressed only in his boxer shorts. Another woman said he had told her that her boyfriend could not help her and that he would be her 'knight in shining armour', to whom she should look to for strength. Mankoo asked another victim if she would like to meet his 'little friend'. Chairman of the Institute of Trichologists told the court categorically that no 'massage to help circulation to the scalp should even go to the front of the shoulders, let alone the breast area'.
    • Student makes sticky sculpture Manchester Evening News 20  Sep 2008   THIS art student made his A-level art project entirely out of chewing gum. Ally Rosenberg got 50 pals to chew a thousand pieces of gum in the school library. The 17-year-old then mixed them together to create the 'skin' for his bust of an old woman's head. The masterpiece was inspired by a woman he met in a pet shop. Ally said: "She had flowing ginger hair and no teeth, and she interested me. "She would probably not be very pleased with the result but I'm proud of it." Ally is now working on his next A-level project – making a bust from teabags, dipped in liquid latex.
    • 2008-09-23 - AHN Staff Marijuana Plantation In Canada Disguised Field By Planting The Dope Beside Corn Stalks Pembroke, Ontario (AHN) -- Eastern Ontario Police confiscated more than 40,000 marijuana plants worth about $40 million in what is considered the largest dope bust in Canadian history. The marijuana plantation was discovered on a 99-plus acre farm in Laurentian Valley Township, which is outside Pembroke in Ontario. Police described the farm as an elaborate operation with even an irrigation system in place, according to Ontario police spokeswoman Sgt. Kristine Rae. To disguise the illegal plantation, the owners built an above-ground pool and pond that had plastic pipes distributed through the fields. The garage doubled as a drying rack. The marijuana plants were interspersed with corn crops. There was also sheep on the farm. Neighbors said they rarely saw people on the farm. Rae said there has been no arrest made yet, but the investigation is going on. Prior to the Thursday catch, the largest bust made by Canadian police was a raid on a brewery plant in Barrie, Ontario in 2003, which yielded 30,000 marijuana plants. The police released the report on the bust Monday. It confirmed all the 40,000 marijuana plants have been destroyed.
    • Man who filmed himself raping little girl arrested in USA  10/16/2007 03:34 Source: AP ©     The U.S.police arrested Chester "Chet" Arthur Stiles, the man accused of videotaping himself while raping a 3-year-old girl . Stiles, 37, had been in a nationwide search since police identified him as the man who allegedly raped and sexually assaulted a girl in a homemade videotape that surfaced last month in the Nevada town of Pahrump. He was arrested Monday night in Henderson, just outside Las Vegas in the U.S. state of Nevada, police said at a news conference. Henderson police officer Mike Dye said he stopped Stiles on a busy thoroughfare. He said Stiles was driving a white sedan with no license plates, and provided an expired California drivers license with a photo that Dye said looked "suspicious." "The picture on the license didn't quite match the gentleman in the vehicle," Dye said. After further questioning, the officer said Stiles revealed his true name. "He said I'm Chester Stiles , the guy you're looking for," Dye said. "He said I'm tired of running." Dye said Stiles cooperated and did not resist. Dye called for backup, and another officer arrived to handcuff Stiles. Las Vegas Police Capt. Vincent Cannito said Stiles has been wanted since Oct. 5 on warrants issued for 21 felony charges in connection with the acts seen on the videotape, including lewdness with a minor, sexual assault and attempted sexual assault. Stiles was alone in the vehicle and unarmed, but police have not fully searched the car, Cannito said. Police were awaiting a warrant. Stiles was being booked at the Clark County jail. He had not yet hired a lawyer or been assigned a court date, police said. Cannito said police were continuing the investigation. "We don't know if we're going to find any other victims," Cannito said. The girl in the videotape was found with her mother in Las Vegas on Sept. 28. Now 7 years old, she has been described as happy and healthy, with no memory of the 2003 encounter with Stiles. Authorities had sought the public's help in finding Stiles, who was wanted on state and federal warrants in a case in which he was alleged to have groped a 6-year-old girl in 2003.

Ramirez says she was trying to discipline her 2-year-old daughter for throwing a temper tantrum.  FOX EWS
    • 12-Year Old McDonald's Hamburger, Still Looking Good September 25, 2008 at 4:30 PM Photograph taken by Karen Hanrahan The McDonald's hamburger on the right is from 2008; the one on the left is from 1996. And they both look fairly edible. Wellness educator and nutrition consultant Karen Hanrahan has kept a McDonald's hamburger since 1996 to illustrate its nonexistent ability to decay. Aside from drying out and bit and having "the oddest smell," it apparently hasn't changed much in the past 12 years.
