Boy attempts wing-walking record An eight-year-old boy is hoping to become the youngest person in the world to 'wing-walk' when he takes to the wing of his grandfather's biplane. Tiger Brewer, from London, will fly through the air over Rendcomb Airfield in Gloucestershire at 100mph (160km/h). Tiger's grandfather, Vic Norman, said: "It will be wonderful to fly with Tiger on my wing." Rhiannon Roche, of the SuperAeroBatics team, said: "We believe he will be the youngest wing-walker in the world." The plane was due to reach 1000ft (304.8m) during the record attempt. The world record is currently held by Guy Mason, son of Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, who first wing-walked in 2001 aged 11. Tiger has grown up around wing-walkers as Mr Norman owns the SuperAeroBatics formation wing-walking team. "He shares my passion for flying and it will be a very special experience," Mr Norman said. Two independent witnesses will watch the flight and send their testimony to Guinness World Records who will decide if the wing-walk is a new record.

Creator of Obama 'Joker' Poster Revealed KTLA News 4:33 AM PDT, August 18, 2009 LOS ANGELES -- We now know who created the controversial poster showing President Barack Obama as Heath Ledger's "Joker" character from "The Dark Knight." Turns out, it was a 20-year-old college student from Chicago who was apparently bored during his winter break. Firas Alkhateeb, a senior history major at the University of Illinois, crafted the picture of Obama using Adobe's Photoshop software, The Los Angeles Times reported. Alkhateeb says he used an online tutorial to "jokerize" the October 23 Time Magazine cover of Obama. He then uploaded the image to the photo-sharing site "Flickr," where an anonymous person stumbled upon it, digitally removed the "Time" reference and instead gave it the headline "Socialism." That poster began popping up on the streets of Los Angeles and other cities about a month ago, creating a stir. The image went viral online, crashing the website that first posted images of it and rising to the top of Google's "Today's Hot Trends" list. Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson condemned the poster and called for its creator to take responsibility for the image. "Depicting the president as demonic and a socialist goes beyond political spoofery," says Hutchinson, "it is mean-spirited and dangerous." "We have issued a public challenge to the person or group that put up the poster to come forth and publicly tell why they have used this offensive depiction to ridicule President Obama." Alkhateeb insists he was not making a political statement with his version of the poster.

2009-08-18 - AHN News 'Flying Taxi' Crashes, Kills Inventor Taiping, Malaysia (AHN) -- The flight test of a "flying taxi" has failed with tragic result when the futuristic transporter crashed and killed its British inventor in a Malaysian town. Michael Robert Dacre, 53, was test flying a prototype of his Jetpod in Taiping when it crashed and burst into flames killing him. Witnesses told a local paper that the flying taxi failed to take off sev eral times before the fatal accident. Dacre and his company Avcen Ltd. was planning to mass produce the Jetpod next year. Powered by two jet engines, the taxi is designed to take off in 410 feet and land in less than a thousand feet of landing strip. It can run quietly at 342 miles per hour, faster than a helicopter.

Widow sells husband's tomb above Marilyn Monroe Tue Aug 18, 2009 8:15am EDT LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - An American widow is selling her husband's burial spot directly above film legend Marilyn Monroe so that she can pay off her mortgage. Elsie Poncher has put an advert on eBay to auction off the tomb in Westwood Village Memorial Park, Los Angeles. "Here is a once in a lifetime and into eternity opportunity to spend your eternal days directly above Marilyn Monroe," says the advertisement. "In fact the person occupying the address right now is looking face down on her." The burial plot is currently occupied by the late Richard Poncher, described by his widow as an entrepreneur who bought two tombs from baseball player Joe DiMaggio, Monroe's ex-husband, as the pair were divorcing in 1954. Monroe died at the age of 36 in 1962. Poncher died at the age of 81 in 1986. Elsie Poncher said she would move her husband's remains over one spot into a crypt intended as her final resting place if the sale was successful and she would be cremated instead when the time came. Bidding for the plot opened at $500,000 and had reached $2.5 million by Sunday. No one from eBay was immediately available to comment on the bidding process or to give more details. Poncher told the Los Angeles Times that she hoped to raise enough money to pay off the $1.6 million mortgage on her Beverly Hills home.

90 percent of U.S. bills carry traces of cocaine Mon August 17, 2009 (CNN) -- The term "dirty money" is for real. A chemistry professor said cocaine found on U.S. bills could provide insight about drug trends. In the course of its average 20 months in circulation, U.S. currency gets whisked into ATMs, clutched, touched and traded perhaps thousands of times at coffee shops, convenience stores and newsstands. And every touch to every bill brings specks of dirt, food, germs or even drug residue. Research presented this weekend reinforced previous findings that 90 percent of paper money circulating in U.S. cities contains traces of cocaine. "When I was a young kid, my mom told me the dirtiest thing in the world is money," said the researcher, Yuegang Zuo, professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. "Mom is always right." Scientists say the amount of cocaine found on bills is not enough to cause health risks. Money can be contaminated with cocaine during drug deals or if a user snorts with a bill. But not all bills are involved in drug use; they can get contaminated inside currency-counting machines at the bank. "When the machine gets contaminated, it transfers the cocaine to the other bank notes," Zuo said. These bills have fewer remnants of cocaine. Some of the dollars in his experiment had .006 micrograms, which is several thousands of times smaller than a single grain of sand. Bills turned up positive for cocaine in these percentages in certain cities: 100 percent: Detroit, Michigan; Boston, Massachusetts; Orlando, Florida; Miami, Florida; Los Angeles, California 88 percent: Toronto, Canada 77 percent: Salt Lake City, Utah 75 percent: Brasilia, Brazil 20 percent: Tokyo, Japan; Beijing, China 0 percent: Zhuzhou, China Zuo, who spoke about his research at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society on Sunday, found that $5, $10, $20 and $50 bills were more likely to be positive for cocaine than $1 bills

Man arrested for hitting girl with pizza THE ASSOCIATED PRESS • August 15, 2009 GAINESVILLE — A Gainesville father has been arrested for hitting his daughter with a pizza slice. The 38-year-old man was arrested early Friday on a charge of child abuse without great harm, a third-degree felony. The man’s name was being withheld to protect the identity of the victim. Deputy Nick Vickers says the man used racist and sexist terms when he asked his daughter to turn off her computer, and she fired back with some crude language of her own. Vickers says the father “intentionally threw a slice of pizza at the victim, striking her in the back of the neck, against her will.” The girl, whose age was not available, called 911 and her father was arrested.
