  • 1. China Could Supplant U.S. as theSupercomputing Superpower06.14.13China’s Tihane-2, the world’s top supercomputer. …Two weeks ago, Jack Dongarra flew to Changsha, China for a meeting with researchers at the NationalUniversity of Defense Technology, home to the country’s top supercomputing program. He expectedan update on their plans for a new mega-machine, but they had a little surprise for him: The systemwas already up and running. It’s called Tianhe-2, and with more than 3 million processor cores, it’s the world’s most powerfulsupercomputer. It can perform more than 30 quadrillion calculations per second, easily dwarfing therunner-up, an Oak Ridge National Laboratories machine known as Titan. The Oak Ridge system can do17.59 quadrillion calculations per second, according to its most recent published benchmarks. On Monday, the folks who keep track of the world’s biggest supercomputers will release the latestrankings, called the Top500 List, and the smart money is betting Tianhe-2 will be on top.The United States, long the dominant power in supercomputing, won’t have a comparable systemuntil around 2016, when the U.S. Department of Energy is expected to build a Tihane-2-rangesupercomputer called Trinity. Tihane-2 probably will beat out all U.S. systems for a few years, which ismore than a loss of bragging rights for the U.S. It raises questions about whether the U.S. is investingenough in research and development to keep its supercomputing lead.
  • 2. 5% Of Your Company? Business Owners Say AbsolutelyThis morning the New York Times reported an interestingpiece of information about Shark Tank, the popular ABCshow where business owners pitch their companies to a group of high-profileinvestors, including billionaire Mark Cuban. Just for appearing on the show, ownersagree to give up 5% of their company or 2% of future royalties. The idea is that exposure to seven million viewers, along with business advice fromtop entrepreneurs, is worth that much. Instinctively, this strikes me as a bad deal—another example of founders undervaluing their equity and future earnings early inthe game. And it fits with an overall theme of the show, where business ownersgive away shockingly large chunks of their companies for paltry sums of cash. Onecringe-worthy example: Jay Kriner of BevBuckle gave up half of his company for$50,000. Why not just sell the whole thing and start over at that point?
  • 3. EuropeGermany Has Become the Cut-Rate Prostitution Capital of the WorldJune 18, 2013TIMEThe presence of thousands of brothels and hundreds of thousands of prostitutes hasheightened competition and pushed prices down steeply in the German sex trade. Onetourist from Florida, who visits the country three times annually to pay for cheap sex, compares the scene to a discount supermarket: “Germany is like Aldi for prostitutes,” hesays.Prostitution became legal in Germany in 2002, and the open sex trade has taken off in theyears since. There are reportedly around 3,000 red-light establishments in the country, and 500 brothels in Berlin alone. It’s been estimated that more than 1 million men pay forsex in Germany every day.One of the classic arguments for legalizing prostitution is that recognizing and regulatingthe world’s oldest profession would improve the conditions of sex workers. Instead, recentreports paint legalized prostitution in Germany largely as a failure.

  • 7. Heres Why United Was Just Named Americas Worst AirlineJune 18th 2013 3:50PMIn a week that saw United Airlines (UAL) place dead last in a customer service ranking of the majorairlines, a picture surfaced that gives some idea of how the airline earned that dubious distinction.FlyerTalk A member of travel forum FlyerTalk posted this picture, which he says he snapped in thelavatory of a United Airlines flight."Apparently, they ran out in one lav half-way home and couldnt bother to transfer a roll fromanother," writes the poster. As you can see, a member of the flight crew seems to have hackedtogether a holder out of duct tape and filled it with cocktail napkins -- which, appropriately enough, bear the slogan "Fly by the tips of your fingers."And this was no short flight, either: He notes that this took place on a San Francisco-to-London trip. While having to use napkins as toilet paper isnt the end of the world, its still hard to imagine anairline like JetBlue (JBLU) running out of toilet paper and having to resort to such college-dorm-styleinnovation.

Today, 14-year-old Jared Marcumappeared before a judge and was officially charged with obstructing an officer.A $500 fine and up to a year in jail, thats the penalty that Jared could face, now that a judge hasallowed the prosecution to move forward with its obstructing an officer charge against him.The Logan County Police Department initially claimed that the at-the-time 8th grade Logan MiddleSchool student was arrested for disturbing the education process, obstructing an officer and Lardierisays that officers even went as far as threatening to charge Jared with making terroristic threats. We obtained official court documents from both sides of this case. On one hand, the arresting officerfrom the Logan City Police Department, James Adkins, claims that when Jared refused to stop talking, that hindered his ability to do his job, hence, the obstruction charge. On the other side, Ben Whitepoints out that nowhere in the arresting officers petition, does it mention Jared ever making anythreats or acting in a violent manner."Every aspect of this is just totally wrong," Lardieri said. "He has no background of anything criminal,up until now and it just seems like nobody wants to admit theyre wrong."Ben White says he will continue working to have the charges against Jared dismissed. If that doesnthappen in the coming weeks, Jared will be back in court on July 11th.
