  1. ... Finally Friday … June 15th 2007
  2. This weeks sign the world is ending……. Poachers kill one of last two white rhinos in Zambia Poachers have shot the last two white rhinos in Zambia, killing one and wounding the other, in a night operation at the Mosi-Oa-Tunya national park in Livingstone, an official said Tuesday. The shooting of the two endangered animals in a heavily-guarded zoological park near Victoria Falls in Zambia's tourist resort town of Livingstone took place last week. "I can confirm that one of the white rhinos was shot dead by suspected poachers. The other one was wounded and is undergoing treatment," said Maureen Mwape, spokesperson of the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA), which would be investigating the shooting. The dead female rhino's horn was apparently removed. Zambia's white rhinos were all killed by poachers but the government managed to acquire six from South Africa in 1993, of which the injured male is the last to survive.
  3. This photo released by the New Bedford Whaling Museum shows the disassembled bomb lance fragment, patented in 1879, left, that was removed from the neck of a bowhead whale captured at Barrow, Alaska, in May 2007. At right is a similar assembled, unfired bomb lance patented in 1885. The body of the bomb lance found in the whale was not recovered. The shiny scars are the result of a chain saw cut.
  4. India readies world's cheapest car: $2,467 Tata Motors touts 'out-of-the-box solutions' that slash development and production costs. But competitors are skeptical about the car's price and quality. Tata Motors ( TTM , news , msgs ) is set to unveil the world's cheapest car as early as January as it takes the growing interest in low-cost vehicles to a new extreme. The Indian automaker will launch its $2,467 vehicle by the third quarter of 2008 and may unveil it at January's Auto Expo in New Delhi, Managing Director Ravi Kant said. Separately, Tata Motors is developing a line of small hatchbacks and midsize sedans to be introduced next year. India produces 1.3 million cars a year. With the market growing at 10% to 12% per year, this could reach 3 million within a decade. The four-door car -- a pet project of Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata -- would be the cheapest by far in its class. The current cheapest, the Maruti 800 produced by Suzuki Motor ( SZKMF , news , msgs ), sells for more than $4,000.
  5. Pride Parade in Sao Paulo, Sunday, June 10, 2007. More than 1 million people packed the streets of Sao Paulo for what is reportedly the world's largest gay pride parade, kissing, dancing and waving rainbow flags in a carnival-like atmosphere to condemn homophobia, racism and sexism.
  6. Marshalltown Police: Woman Stole Toilet Paper From Courthouse   Police Chief Says Butts Caught In Act   MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa -- A Marshalltown woman faces charges of stealing three rolls of toilet paper from the local courthouse and could get prison time. NewsChannel 8's Katie Piper caught up with the woman accused of stealing the toilet paper. Courthouse employees said they thought something was up. "They said they seem to go through a lot of toilet paper at the courthouse," said Marshalltown Police Chief Lon Walker. Marshalltown police said one of the employees caught Suzanne Marie Butts , of Marshalltown, taking the two-ply from the women's bathroom and called police. The courthouse parking lot attendant said he knew about toilet paper going missing. "I've heard they call it the toilet paper caper," said parking lot attendant Gene Seim. Police said they caught up with Butts outside the courthouse Friday, and she was hiding the toilet paper in her shirt. Butts told NewsChannel 8 that it was the first time she had stolen toilet paper and that her attorney said not talk. "He told me not to ask any questions until he's with me," Butts said. The courthouse workers told police they suspected something was up. "She's facing three years incarceration for three rolls of toilet paper," Walker said. "Normally, that would be a simple misdemeanor," Walker said. Police said that on Friday, Butts was arrested on charges of stealing $30 from a family member. That makes four theft charges against her. A judge will decide what punishment fits this crime.
  7. Aussies sell sand to Saudis June 12, 2007 12:00   A GROUP of Australian companies is exporting the impossible – they are selling sand to Saudi Arabia. The construction boom in the desert nations of the Middle East has created a demand for raw materials, and the region has become a new export destination for Australian businesses. Perth's GMA Garnet will this month send a shipment of heavy mineral sand to Saudi Arabia for sandblasting, a high-pressure technique to smooth and clean hard surfaces in buildings. Managing director Torsten Ketelsen said the special alluvial sand is suited for sandblasting because it is free of silica, which creates dust that can cause lung cancer and silicosis in workers. "The Australian garnet sand that we are exporting has unique characteristics including very high hardness and durability which is perfect as an industrial abrasive and for ultra-high pressure waterjet cutting applications," Mr Ketelsen said. The company has set up its bulk handling and reprocessing plants in Jebel Ali and more recently in Jubail, in Saudi Arabia. Austrade estimates exports to the Middle East region more than tripled since 1991 from $1.7 billion to $5.6 billion, and are continuing to grow.
  8. Dutch smoking ban to cover coffee shops Fri Jun 8, 3:49 PM ET A Dutch smoking ban will come into force in July next year for all restaurants and cafes -- including coffee shops where cannabis is the top attraction, the government decided on Friday. "Coffee shops will be treated in the same manner as other catering businesses. They will be smoke-free," Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende told NOS television. "It would have been wrong to move towards a smoke-free catering industry and then make an exception for coffee shops. People would not have understood that." Establishments will not in fact have to be completely smoke-free. Proprietors will be allowed to set up a separate room or glass partition behind which people can smoke, but customers will not be served there to protect staff. "Employees should not have to work in an environment were they are constantly exposed to the harmful effects of smoking," Balkenende said after the cabinet's decision on Friday. Amsterdam's renowned coffee shops, where marijuana can be smoked openly in a relaxed atmosphere, are one of the city's big draws for tourists. Coffee shop owners argue that the ban only applies to tobacco and was unlikely to hit them hard. Whilst commonly mixed with tobacco, marijuana can also be smoked on its own, especially in pipes, vaporisers and other contraptions. Soft drugs are officially banned in the Netherlands but under a policy of tolerance, buyers are allowed to have less than 5 grams of cannabis in their possession.
  9.   Monday June 11th, 2007 1:11 AM by BHDC Staff     Filed under: Sex , Scandals , Washington Post , Larry Flynt Big Head DC caught up with Hustler’s Larry Flynt in Washington this weekend attending a swank cardiac awareness function put on by Larry King and pals. But we could care less about the CNN talker’s ticker. We wanted to know how many saucy sex tips Flynt has been getting as a result of his recent splashy advertisement in The Washington Post , which offered a  $1 million dollar bounty for politico sexploits revealed. “Ha!” bellowed Flynt, who wore a monogrammed silk shirt and gold rings on several fingers. “Enough to make your mama scared…” That translates to approximately  200 tips thus far, he explained (thankfully!). He added that he fully expects to break a “huge” political sex scandal and he doesn’t care what political party he “pisses off” in the process.

  11. Female Lakeland High teacher accused of sexual contact with boy THE JOURNAL NEWS ELMSFORD - A 24-year-old Lakeland High School social studies teacher was arrested early today after police said she was seen having sexual contact with a 16-year-old boy in her parked car behind an Elmsford restaurant. Stephanie A. Gross of 3243 Amelia Drive, Mohegan Lake, was inside her car with the boy, whose identity is being withheld by police. Lakeland school district officials this afternoon began preparations to fire her and said she would not return to the school. An Elmsford police officer on a routine patrol observed Gross "straddling the victim" and kissing and caressing him in the car's passenger seat at 1:08 a.m. on Mortelliti Lane behind Rini's Restaurant, said Sgt. Stephen Woehrle. No charges were filed against the teenager, Woehrle said. Gross, who turns 25 later this month, has been charged with third-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, misdemeanors. She was released on $1,500 bail and is next scheduled to appear in Elmsford Village Court on May 16. Gross began teaching at several grade levels at Lakeland High School in September and is still on probation. Lakeland school officials said this afternoon that Gross would be facing termination, barring any new developments or information from the police that would exculpate her.

  14. For 33-year-old expectant mother Michelle Hasni, it all started with a her unborn child’s incessant hiccups. When her doctor ordered an ultrasound, it was clear that this wasn’t a bad case of hiccups - what she felt was the baby’s heart beating outside of his body (a rare condition called ectopia cordis, which is usually fatal). The baby, Naseem Hasni, arrived two weeks early and the doctors operated immediately to put his heart back inside his chest cavity. The baby is doing fine and seems to have beaten the odds -
