  2. Does Pakistan's Taliban Surge Raise a Nuclear Threat? Friday, Apr. 24, 2009 When asked last year about the security of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal, Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Admiral Mike Mullen didn't hesitate: "I'm very comfortable that the nuclear weapons in Pakistan are secure," he said flatly. Asked the same question earlier this month, his answer had changed. "I'm reasonably comfortable," he said, "that the nuclear weapons are secure." As America's top military officer, Mullen has traveled regularly to Pakistan — twice in just the past two weeks — for talks with his Pakistani counterpart, General Ashfaq Kayani, and others. And like all those who have risen to four-star rank, Mullen chooses his words with extreme care. Replacing "very comfortable" with "reasonably comfortable" is a decidedly discomforting signal of Washington's concern that no matter how well-guarded the nukes may be today, the chaos now enveloping Pakistan doesn't bode well for their status tomorrow or the day after. The prospect of turmoil in Pakistan sends shivers up the spines of those U.S. officials charged with keeping tabs on foreign nuclear weapons. Pakistan is thought to possess about 100 — the U.S. isn't sure of the total, and may not know where all of them are. Still, if Pakistan collapses, the U.S. military is primed to enter the country and secure as many of those weapons as it can, according to U.S. officials.
  3.   China’s nuclear tests could have taken the lives of 1.48 million people Front page / Science / Planet Earth 21.04.2009 Source: Pravda.Ru     The nuclear tests, which China conducted in 1964-1996 could have taken the lives of over 200,000 people. Soldiers were made to gallop on horseback towards nuclear mushrooms. Many of them died of radiation exposure. Many of them continue to die today. Japanese Professor of physics, Jun Takada, calculated that up to 1.48 million Chinese could have caught radiation disease and up to 190,000 of them could have died of leukemia and cancer, Infox.ru reports with reference to The Times . The scientist calculated that the so-called nuclear sands of radioactive dust and particles had reached many towns and villages situated along the ancient Silk Road. Takada found vestiges of the radiation disease near the border territory between China and Kazakhstan, a republic of the former Soviet Union. Takada concluded as a result of his research that China’s three major nuclear tests exceeded the power of the Chernobyl disaster four times. He interviewed many Chinese nationals who were involved in the nuclear tests. Many of them told the scientist that they were still suffering from the disease, that many of their children were born with either dead or with severe deformities. That was the price that the nation had to pay for the decision that the Chinese leadership made in 1955 to build a nuclear bomb. Mao Zedong was concerned about the nuclear power of the United States . He also wanted to take advantage of the USSR as world’s number one communist state, the Japanese scientist believes. The first nuclear test was made on October 16, 1964. Forty-six nuclear blasts were made on the Lop Nur test ground, 1,500 miles west of Beijing. There were 46 nuclear blasts performed there: 23 bombs exploded in the atmosphere, 22 under the ground, and one explosion ended unsuccessfully. China held its last nuclear atmospheric test in 1980, whereas underground tests were finished only in the summer of 1996. Historians say that the cost of China’s first A-bomb made up a third of the nation’s entire state budget in 1957. Over 20 million Chinese peasants died of hunger that year.
  4. Kenyan women's group tells men: Make war? No love Wednesday, April 29, 2009 NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) -- Thousands of Kenyan women vowed Wednesday to begin a weeklong sex strike to try to protest their country's bickering leadership, which they say threatens to revive the bloody chaos that convulsed the African country last year. Leaders from Kenya's largest and oldest group dedicated to women's rights, the Women's Development Organization, said they hope the boycott will persuade men to pressure the government to make peace. Eleven women's groups are participating in the strike. The groups have also called on the wives of President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga to abstain. It was not clear how either wife responded to the request. "We have looked at all issues which can bring people to talk and we have seen that sex is the answer," said Rukia Subow, chairman of the Women's Development Organization. "It does not know tribe, it does not have a (political) party and it happens in the lowest households." Sex strikes are rare worldwide. Many men in Kenya are polygamous, as is allowed by law. Kenyan government spokesman Alfred Mutua said he was unaware of the strike. The disputed election between Kibaki and then-challenger Odinga led to violence that killed more than 1,000 people and left more than 600,000 homeless. The two were installed after a month of mediation, but infighting has threatened to break apart the fragile coalition.
  5. The strongest 72-year-old you'll ever meet The (Allentown) Morning Call Posted: 04/26/2009 12:05:04 AM EDT ALLENTOWN, Pa.— Fred Glass is 72 years old, stands 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs only 151 pounds. But he routinely hoists barbells twice as heavy—300 pounds, or, on a good day, 400 pounds or more—into the air. His calves are spindly, but on his small frame are muscles of steel: the backs of his thighs look armor-plated, his triceps are spectacular and when he flexes, the muscles encircling his chest and back are peerless. Younger and taller men may have bulkier muscles, but Glass' strength is world class. Last year, Glass set an International Powerlifting Association world record for his weight and age, squatting 400 pounds and dead lifting 380 pounds in a competition at the York Barbell Co. in York. In 1990, Glass was named best power lifter in the world at the World Powerlifting Congress Masters Championship in Italy. He's been competing for 35 years and has a wall of 200 trophies, including 16 world championships, in his garage to show for it. To squat lift, he'll stoop to put his shoulders beneath a barbell, a long steel bar with several 45-pound round weight plates at each end, resting on a metal frame. As he slowly stands up, his face contorted with exertion, the barbell rises, too. Then, he squats to a seated position and comes up again. To dead lift, Glass reaches down to grab a barbell resting on the floor. With a mighty effort, the laws of gravity are suspended and he pulls it upward for a brief moment. When he releases, heavy metal crashes down and Glass exhales. The back of his T-shirt says "Pain is temporary, pride is forever."
  6. Don't you mess with grandpa, sonny Apr 23, 2009    TACOMA, Wash. -- Ted Mazetier may be a grandfather, but at 84 years old, he's still got his chops. And two men learned that the hard way. Mazetier was driving down South Proctor Street Wednesday night when he spotted a car on the curb and two guys standing nearby. He thought they needed help, so he stopped. But as soon as he pulled over, the two men pounced. "The guy comes over to my car, and unfortunately my window was open, because he cold-cocked me. I mean, just sucker-punched me. Just bam!" Mazetier said.      The punch left quite a shiner on Mazetier. But he wasn't about to take a beating sitting down. You see, Mazetier is a World War II veteran who also happened to spend his entire career watching over criminals imprisoned in the U.S. penal system. In short, he can handle trouble. "When I opened the door, he started toward me and I kicked him in the balls," he said. When the other man charged, Mazetier put his feet up and kicked him in the belly. "He kind of bent a little and went down. And I went around the guy and I'm in the street, and I'm waving for cars to stop and, you know, help." The two men fled, not having gotten whatever they were looking for. Moments later, a passerby came to Mazetier's aid. That person had happened to get a glimpse of the fleeing men, and described them to police. "And so the next thing I know, I was in the hospital and when the cops came in the hospital - the same ones that interviewed me - they said, 'We got 'em.' And I said, 'Thank God.'" Mazetier said. Tacoma police believe the same two men assaulted another victim earlier in the evening in the same part of town. Mazetier is recovering, still dealing with the shiner and the shock. "It's wrong. It's absolutely wrong," he said.
  7. Cops wait 3 weeks for swallowed cocaine Published: April 29, 2009 at 11:04 AM     TORONTO , April 29 (UPI) -- The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say it took a suspected Toronto drug mule three weeks to excrete 76 tampon-sized packets of cocaine into a bedpan. Hatim Gulamhusein, 48, was arrested April 7 at Toronto's international airport after arriving on a flight from Buenos Aires, Argentina, RCMP Cpl. Cathy McCrory told the National Post. She said border agents are "very good" at spotting people who have swallowed drug packages or secreted them in their bodies. Once in custody, Gulamhusein required six trips to a hospital for X-rays and CT scans, and refused to allow doctors to surgically remove the large packets, McCrory said. He did consent to taking laxatives, which she said resulted in a "24-hour bedpan vigil," the report said. "The doctors said that if one of these became compromised inside him, there was nothing they could do for him," McCrory said. "We didn't need any more evidence -- he was pooping dope, so we were good to go -- but we were very concerned for his health." He passed nearly two pounds of cocaine with a street value of about $100,000, the RCMP said. Gulamhusein remains in custody and was to appear in court this week.   UPI.com
  8. News in English Opdateret 27. apr 2009 Girls developing breasts early Young girls are developing breasts early, and for some with no other physical signs of puberty. Pre-pubescent Danish girls are developing breasts a year earlier than previously and seemingly not as a result of their own hormones, according to a new survey from the Rigshospitalet’s Department of Growth and Reproduction. “We believe this is a result of environmental factors – hormone disrupting substances that have a strength to develop breasts despite the fact that the girls do not enter puberty. These substances are everywhere – in cosmetics, foodstuffs, paint – everywhere,” says Sr. Lise Aksglæde one of the authors of the report, naming parabenes and phthalates as two of the substances under suspicion. More than 2,000 Copenhagen girls between five and a half and 20 years of age have taken part in the puberty survey. Half were surveyed in 1992 and 1993 and the rest between 2006 and 2008. Results have been published in the American scientific journal Pediatrics. “The results are very worrying. A dark horse has appeared that affects Danish children and we don’t know what it is. We keep on measuring substances such as phthalates and parabenes but this cannot necessarily give us the answer as to whether these are the substances affecting them,” says Rigshospitalet’s Department of Growth and Reproduction Head Professor Anders Juul.

  10. 30-stone mother admits to feeding triplets junk food. .. and to giving them their first McDonald's at just SIX MONTHS  28th April 2009 She made history as the fattest ever mother of triplets, weighing in at 40 stone. But far from ensuring her babies don't go the same way she did, Leanne Salt is happy to admit feeding them junk food, including fish and chips and McDonald's meals. Yesterday the 24-year-old - still dangerously overweight at 30 stone - told of her approach to motherhood which doctors say is certain to leave them facing health problems. Big girl: The 24-year-old, who blames her obesity on a thyroid problem, fell pregnant after seeing her then-boyfriend for just four weeks 'They were six months old when they had their first McDonald's,' she said. 'They had chicken nuggets and chips and loved it. 'They like fish and chips too, but I take the batter off the fish, so I guess that's healthy.' Miss Salt's immense weight meant the safe delivery of her triplets - daughters Deanna and Daisy, and son Finlee - last August was a major challenge for medics. It took a 68-strong team and a bill for the NHS of £200,000, including a specially-built operating table for her Caesarean section. Now back home in Coventry and living on benefits, she says she is too busy to prepare proper meals for her triplets or do much in the way of housework. Miss Salt, who blames her obesity on a thyroid problem, fell pregnant after seeing her then boyfriend for just four weeks. They split up halfway through her pregnancy, and she now lives with her mother Jane, 46, and brother Blane, neither of whom is overweight. The babies each consume around 1,249 calories a day, nearly double the recommended 765 for their 17lb weight at the age of eight months.   Danger diet: Leanne Salt, who weighs 30 stone, happily admits feeding her triplets junk food, including fish and chips and McDonald's meals But their mother denies they are suffering as a result. 'Babies are always hungry,' she said. 'Sometimes it's easier to give them food that's already prepared. 'Anyway, they don't always have junk food - sometimes I cook a microwave meal for them. My babies are healthy.' She receives total benefits of £227 a week - £140 tax credit, £42 child benefit and £45 family allowance - which she spends on her ten-a-day cigarette habit and food.

  12. Court climax premature for Madonna of Orgasm Church 29 Apr 09 16:50 The Madonna of Orgasm Church (Orgasmens Madonnas kyrka) has suffered a disappointing reversal following a Swedish court ruling that the church’s name is unacceptable and offensive.     The church’s founder, artist Carlos Bebeacua who resides in Lövestad in southern Sweden, has been fighting a lengthy legal battle in his bid to have the Madonna of Orgasm Church registered as a faith community in Sweden. Founded by Bebeacua in the early 1990s, the Madonna of Orgasm Church is centered on a similarly named painting by Bebeacua which sparked protests during the 1992 World’s Fair in Seville, Spain. “The orgasm is God, the orgasm should be worshiped,” Bebeacua once told the Kvällsposten newspaper. “The orgasm is the ultimate feeling of lust, it shouldn’t be limited to ejaculation. You can reach it through art or by looking at a landscape and thinking ‘Wow!’” Bebeacua hoped that registering the Madonna of Orgasm Church as a faith community in Sweden would encourage more people to consider the orgasm as God. In November 2008, he achieved an important victory when the county administrative court overruled Sweden’s Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency ( Kammarkollegiet ), which had refused to register the Madonna of Orgasm Church because its name was offensive. But Kammarkollegiet appealed the ruling to the Administrative Court of Appeal, which on Tuesday overturned the lower court’s decision. According to the appeals court, the name of Bebeacua’s Madonna of Orgasm Church “violates what is considered acceptable praxis” and therefore can be denied registration as a faith community. Specifically, the court took issue with juxtaposition of the words “Madonna”, “orgasm”, and “church”.   The Local / Swedens News in English
  13. Ada man, 20, arrested for attempted murder of grandmother PM Apr 28, 2009    KXII-TV   PONOTOC COUNTY , Okla. -- A 20-year-old Pontotoc County man stands accused of trying to kill his grandmother. Daniel Lewis Whelchel was arrested Monday just outside of Ada. According to the Pontotoc County Sheriff's Department, Whelchel lived with his grandmother, 60-year-old Elaine Welchel, and had done so for over 18 years. On Sunday night, Mr. Whelchel told his grandmother he was tired of waiting for her to die naturally, and according to the sheriff, asked her if she wanted to die. Mr. Welchel then allegedly tried to break her neck, beat her until she was unconscious, and left her in a field near Ada. Elaine Whelchel is now recovering at a local hospital. Daniel Whelchel faces attempted murder charges.
  14. D u t c h signs point to g a y sex seekers Posted Wed Apr 29, 2009 7:00am AEST A park near Amsterdam has unveiled information signs pointing out spots where officials say gay men are known to have sex, so visitors are not taken by surprise. The signs "clearly indicate what is happening in each zone; also those where gay men are known to practice 'cruising'," municipal spokeswoman Manon Koffijberg said. Cruising is a slang word used to describe the act of trawling for casual sex. "If you don't want to be confronted by a vision of that sort, the signs allow you to avoid specific areas," Ms Koffijberg said. The De Oeverlanden park in Slotervaart, south-west of Amsterdam, is known as a place where homosexuals from all over the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe go in search of sex partners. Ms Koffijberg said that while having sex in public was against the law, the park has been used for this purpose for so long that it has become "gedoog", a Dutch word for tolerating unwanted behaviour. The sexual activities of cruisers, she said, kept mostly to the bushes in the park, and the new signs sought to ensure that they stayed there. "There are various groups of users of the park; people with small children who bathe on the beaches, those who walk their dogs, gays cruising and nature lovers," Ms Koffijberg said. "Things are arranged so that each group can relax in their own area without intruding on each other." There had been recent complaints of gay bashing in the Slotervaart area, populated by a large group of immigrants of Muslim origin, with reports of robberies and violence against gay men in De Oeverlanden park. - AFP
  15. Firemaen Go Over To The Dark Side April 28, 2009 “ It looks like something out of Star Wars - but inside this futuristic helmet is a fireman . Brigades across the country are buying the headgear which can stand heat of more than 1,000C, without the temperature inside going above 35C. And in technology reminiscent of cartoon character Inspector Gadget, firemen can use a lever at the side of the helmet to pull down a gold-plated visor for extra protection. Torches are clipped to either side of the helmet, and speakers, microphones and cameras can be attached to allow firemen to stay in touch. The $170 helmets are made in France by safety equipment experts MSA. The new headgear provides protection all the way around a fireman’s head, face and neck.”
  16. A Whole Chicken In A Can April 29, 2009 – 1:18 pm Tracy from I Hate My Message Board is a very, very brave woman. You see, not only did she purchase one of Sweet Sue’s Canned Whole Chickens, but she actually cooked it… and ate some of it. And luckily for all of us less brave souls, she photographed the entire process. I don’t know about you guys, but I wouldn’t eat anything that looked like forgotten leftovers from the “Neo Being Birthed In The Matrix” scene… though I do fully expect to see Sandra Lee pouring one of these into a slow cooker on an episode of Semi-Homemade. Bon appetit!

  18. The last fighter pilot has already been born . . ..   Northrop Grumman yesterday took the wraps off one of the most advanced robot aircraft in the world, the X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System (UCAS).The X-47B is intended to operate from the flight deck of US Navy aircraft carriers, carrying out entire missions including air-to-air refuelling without pilot input.   "The X-47B will demonstrate how unmanned combat aircraft can operate from aircraft carriers ... extending the carrier's reach and power projection from anywhere in the world," said Captain Martin Deppe, of the US Navy.  The X-47B project will provide just two demonstrator aircraft, mainly intended to prove that unmanned planes can successfully take off from and land onto US carriers. Catapult launch - and even more so, arrested landings - have traditionally been considered one of the most difficult and stressful piloting feats.
  19. Apart from proving the concept of unmanned carrier aircraft, however, the X-47B will also be able to conduct air-to-air refuelling - giving it almost unlimited endurance. The US Navy hasn't asked for more, but in fact the aircraft would have little difficulty carrying weapons and flying autonomous strike missions, as it is derived from a previous joint programme between the navy and air force intended to produce a plane which could do just that.  The X-47B, in fact, will be one of the first true killer robots, able to conduct a mission using live weapons without needing to communicate with pilots or even supervisors on its mother ship or back in the?USA. Current roboplanes are typically handled in combat over satcomms channels from bases in? America , and take off and land under the control of pilots in ground stations near the runway.  Apart from its robot brain and controls, the X-47B also boasts much longer range than a normal carrier jet - and features Stealth technology. Some in the US Navy hope that it will allow carriers to stand much further off from threatening enemy coasts of the future, which might harbour dangerous ship-killing missiles able to punch through the fleet's defences.  Others are hostile, however. Pilots are one of the?US?navy's dominant subcultures, and they count themselves better than lowly airforce pukes because they do arrested landings - "traps". The Top Guns won't be looking forward to telling their children that there's no longer any way to win one's glorious wings of gold and the respect of the nation by jockeying a tailhook jet down to a wet deck on a stormy night far out at sea.  According to Northrop, the X-47B, having now been completed, will now enter ground tests in preparation for a first runway flight next autumn. Carrier trials are to begin in 2011.

  23. Over 200 pot plants found in car after traffic stop April 23, 2009   PORT CHARLOTTE, FL. - The Charlotte County Sheriff's Street Crimes Unit made a traffic stop on a driver who ran a stop sign Wednesday night and found 209 marijuana plants in the car. According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred at Birchcrest Blvd. and Gibralter Drive in Port Charlotte. When deputies approached the driver, 23-year-old Matthew Allen Ward, they observed a large plastic tray in the back seat with the pot plants. Deputies said they detected the smell of recently burned marijuana coming from inside the car. Ward appeared nervous and was shaking, and then deputies saw a plastic baggie and rolling papers sticking out of his right front pocket in plain view. Total weight of the marijuana seized was 43.2 grams. Based on the evidence collected, Street Crimes deputies had probable cause to charge Ward with Cultivation of Marijuana, Possession of Marijuana over 20 Grams, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Driving Without a Valid Driver's License. He was transported to the Charlotte County Jail with bond set at $9,000.
  24. Ferrari outruns police cruiser on B.C. highway   No match for flatfleet   April 24, 2009 6:01 AM   A Port Moody police cruiser crashed Wednesday afternoon after what witnesses described as a police chase with a Ferrari on the Barnet Highway, according to Vancouver's News1130 radio. The station, quoting Port Moody police, said an officer on duty saw a red Ferrari F430   turn onto the highway and speed away quickly. Police said the car was weaving in and around other cars, although Constable Bill Kim woudn't call it a chase. Kim said the officer did try to catch up to the Ferrari, but could catch the car and lost control. "As the officer was attempting to close the distance, from my accounts, he might have hit a patch of road-gravel causing the vehicle to turn, lost control and swerved into a minivan with a single occupant." No one was injured in the crash. Police are still looking for the Ferrari and its driver. Vancouver Sun
  25. 6 arrested in Hattiesburg prostitution sting April 23, 2009 Hattiesburg police arrested six people Wednesday during a prostitution sting. The undercover operation, which started around noon and ran about six hours, was law enforcement’s response to public outcry of what was believed to be acts of prostitution occurring in and around the downtown area. 26. The hotel suite in a plane that's crash bang in the middle of the jungle 24th April 2009 The location looks like a scene from TV drama Lost - a crashed airliner surrounded by miles of impenetrable jungle on one side and deep blue ocean on the other. But, in fact, the passenger jet is actually part of a luxurious hotel suite where highfliers can relax and enjoy the fantasy of being cut off from the rest of the world. The two bedroom suite is housed inside the fuselage of a 1965 Boeing 727 which was destined for scrap. High flying: Jutting out from a hillside, the jet offers views of the ocean and the jungle from wingside balconies Jutting out from a hillside, the plane offers spectacular views of the Manuel Antonio National Park's rain forest in Costa Rica from balconies built on each wing. Inside the refurbished airframe are two wood-panelled bedrooms, a kitchenette, dining room and living area and two bathrooms.
  27. It costs between £200 and £250 per night to book the unusual suite situated on the Pacific Coast. Luxurious: One of the two teak panelled bedrooms in the suite at the Hotel Costa Verde in Costa Rica Wow factor: A balcony perches 50ft up on a wing decked out with a chandelier and hand-carved furniture The giant was transported piece by piece from the San Jose airport to its current resting place on a pedestal 50 feet above the beach. Five big trucks were needed to get the plane out to the resort, and while the transportation certainly had a negative ecological impact, the finished project is a stunning example of adaptive reuse. The hotel spokesman added: ‘At this height, you will enjoy scenic ocean and jungle views from the hard wood deck built atop the plane’s former right wing. ‘The plane’s interior is Costa Rican teak paneling from the cockpit to the tail. Furnishings are hand-carved, teak furniture from Java, Indonesia.

  29. Burned Baby's Parents Charged, Mother: Didn't Want to Pay for Ambulance April 24, 2009 KANSAS CITY, MO. - The parents of a 5-month-old are under arrest and charged with endangering the welfare of a child after the baby was burned and they didn't take him to the hospital for weeks. Police said officials at Children's Mercy Hospital called them when the baby boy was brought in with burns. The boy's parents, Erica Davis & Jake Fisher III, said he was accidentally burned with hot water during a bath. Davis first told police that on Thursday, March 26 the baby was burned and she tried to find a ride to the hospital, but couldn't. She said she didn't call an ambulance because she "didn't want to pay the $700 for it." Davis then told police she did manage to get the baby to the hospital, but later she admitted that was a lie. David said she finally sought medical treatment on April 22 because "it started to look moist." Fisher told police he had been giving the boy a bath in the sink. He had taken his eyes off of him for "less than 30 seconds" to attend to his 1-year-old daughter who had defecated on the bathroom floor. Then, he heard the baby scream. Fisher told police his 2-year-old daughter had turned off the cold water in the sink, so only hot water was pouring onto the baby. Fisher said he tried to treat the baby and called Davis. He said he didn't call an ambulance because the injuries "were not bleeding and did not appear life-threatening." Hospital photos showed the baby had burns to the stomach, thighs and butt area. And, the hospital said they had no record of him ever being treated.

  31. Sex- Doll Threesome Man Gets Off   NBCMIAMI.com George Bartusek, who got freaky with two blow-up sex dolls in a grocery store parking lot, won't do jail time, a judge has ruled. Bartusek was let off with six months probation for his open-air synthetic threesome in a Publix Parking Lot in Cape Coral in February. Stunned onlookers had seen the 51-year-old inappropriately touching his -- ahem -- companions in plain sight. "As I walk by I saw this guy with two blow up dolls kissing them and bouncing them and trying to get people's attention," a female witness told WPBF after the incident. "It's just crazy, you know, and I'm with my daughter and she couldn't believe what we were seeing," added another witness, Arthur Castro. Bartusek, like his blow-up friends, stayed silent as he left court after the sentencing yesterday, refusing to answer any reporters' questions. Charged with breach of peace and trespassing, Bartusek was facing a year in jail for his escapade. Now he'll likely have to go to Winn-Dixie for groceries -- the judge told him he isn't welcome back at Publix.
