  • 1. Ron Paul: Fix IRS by shutting it ‘once and for all’The Washington TimesMonday, May 20, 2013Former Rep. Ron Paul of Texas called the recent IRS fiasco troubling — but writes that the only wayCongress can protect the freedoms of Americans from a long pattern of suspected IRS abuse is to“shutter the doors” of the agency “once and for all.”The longtime GOP congressman writes that IRS agents in the 1930s were essentially “hit squads”against opponents of the New Deal, and that allegations of IRS abuse spanned the administrations ofPresidents Kennedy, Nixon, Clinton and George W. Bush.“The bipartisan tradition of using the IRS as a tool to harass political opponents suggests that theproblem is deeper than just a few ‘rogue’ IRS agents — or even corruption within one, two, three ormany administrations,” Dr. Paul writes in his weekly column, “Texas Straight Talk. “Instead, theproblem [lies] in the extraordinary power the tax system grants the IRS.”The libertarian and tea party hero goes on to argue that the power of the IRS can only be counteredwith a complete overhaul to the country’s tax system.
  • 2. NASA-funded researchThe audacious plan to end hunger with 3-D printed foodMay 21, 2013QUARTZAnjan Contractor’s 3D food printer might evoke visions of the replicator” popularized in Star Trek, from which CaptainPicard was constantly interrupting himself to order tea. And indeed Contractor’s company, Systems & MaterialsResearch Corporation, just got a six month, $125,000 grant from NASA to create a prototype of his universal foodsynthesizer. But Contractor, a mechanical engineer with a background in 3D printing, envisions a much more mundane—andultimately more important—use for the technology. He sees a day when every kitchen has a 3D printer, and theearth’s 12 billion people feed themselves customized, nutritionally-appropriate meals synthesized one layer at a time, from cartridges of powder and oils they buy at the corner grocery store. Contractor’s vision would mean the end offood waste, because the powder his system will use is shelf-stable for up to 30 years, so that each cartridge, whetherit contains sugars, complex carbohydrates, protein or some other basic building block, would be fully exhaustedbefore being returned to the store.
  • 3. Americas first hemp crop in 60 years was planted this week in ColoradoTreeHuggerMay 17, 2013Hemp, the THC-free cousin of cannabis, has recently been made legal in Colorado, but the fedsstill dont approve, even though the selling of hemp products is perfectly legal (about $500million worth are imported from other countries every year).Whats a would-be hemp farmer to do when faced with this dilemma? Ryan Loflin, of Springfield,Colorado, decided to take a chance and go ahead anyway. As of Monday this week, he plantedthe first official hemp crop in the United States in about 60 years. This was historic enough that adocumentary film crew was present.Loflin is planting 60 acres that were previously used to grow alfalfa. With his partner ChrisThompson, they plan to make hemp oil.Hopefully this will help bring attention - and support - to a bill in congress that would legalizeindustrial hemp (as well as regulate marijuana in states where it is legal). There are so manythings we can do with hemp, a crop that requires little or no fertilizer and pesticides, its crazy tokeep farmers from growing it.

  • 7. How Much Will a Legal Marijuana Habit Cost You?TimeMay 20, 2013If you’re an average pot smoker in Colorado—paying average pricesfor average-quality marijuana—you can expect to spend around$650 on weed next year.A study conducted by the Colorado Futures Center at Colorado State University aimed to getto the bottom of how much the state can expect to collect in tax revenues now thatmarijuana is legal. By doing a little extra math, we can get a rough estimate for what theaverage marijuana enthusiast will spend annually as well.Researchers estimate that in 2014, 642,772 Colorado residents, or about 12.5% of the statepopulation, will take advantage of pot’s newly legal status. Analysts assumed each personwould smoke or otherwise “use” 3.53 ounces of marijuana annually, for a total of 2,268,985ounces (about 142,000 pounds) per year. All of these numbers may be underestimated, because they’re based on data compiled whenrecreational marijuana was illegal.
