  2. Honeybees mysteriously disappear across USA causing national tragedy A nation-wide honeybee crisis is under way in the United States . Lately bees have begun to rapidly disappear in 24 states across the country. For reasons unknown, bees are flying off in search of nectar and pollen and simply never returning to their colonies. The bee losses are reportedly ranging from 30 to 60 percent on the West Coast. The situation is even worse on the East Coast and Texas where beekeepers have reported losses of more than 70 percent. Aside from producing honey, bees also pollinate a variety of plants used as food by humans. Each year bees pollinate an estimated $14 billion worth of seeds and crops in the United States, largely fruits, vegetables and nuts. The sudden mysterious losses are making beekeepers increasingly concerned about their livelihoods. Researchers say that they bees may die of natural causes; they may get disoriented or fall victim to mites. According to beekeepers, a loss under 20 percent is considered as normal in the off-season. Some beekeepers call the recent bee crisis a national tragedy , the first major affliction that befell the U.S. bee industry. Pravda
  3. Teacher Gets 10 Years For Raping Child Woman Was Sixth-Grade Science Teacher POSTED: 2:30 pm CDT March 17, 2007 WILMINGTON, Del. -- A sixth-grade science teacher who seduced a 13-year-old male student has been sentenced to 10 years in prison -- a sentence that her attorney argued was much longer than what teachers convicted in similar cases have received. Rachel L. Holt, 35, holds a master's degree in education and had no previous criminal record. Wearing a red prison jumpsuit, she sobbed in court as her sentence was announced on Friday. Holt was initially charged with 28 counts of first-degree rape. Police accused her of having illegal sexual intercourse with the boy at least that many times during an intense weeklong affair. She was also accused of plying the boy with alcohol and allowing him to drive her car.
  4. Rise in users hooked on skunk cannabis By Duncan Gardham Last Updated: 2:36am GMT 19/03/2007 A record number of people are seeking treatment for cannabis addiction as super-strength strains of the drug take a grip on users .Cannabis resin, usually smuggled into Britain from North Africa, has been replaced on the streets by home-grown skunk, a highly potent form of cannabis leaves. The plants can be grown in houses with lights and watering systems and produce a drug up to 25 times stronger than that available a decade ago.Figures from the National Treatment Agency show that the number receiving treatment for addiction to cannabis has risen from 13,400 in 2004-2005 (excluding the North West) to 22,500 for the first 10 months of 2006-2007.advertisementIn that time the number of young people receiving treatment almost doubled from 5,000 to 9,500. There has also been an increase in the number of patients treated in NHS hospitals for mental illness and behavioural problems linked to cannabis - from 581 in 2001 to nearly 1,000 last year. The rise in those needing treatment has come as figures from the National Crime Survey show actual use of cannabis is falling.Research has suggested that heavy use of cannabis is associated with a four-fold increase in the risk of developing schizophrenia. It is also associated with higher rates of depression and anxiety. Telegraph.co.uk
  5. Teen reported for sex attack on dog Published: 20th March 2007 12:41 CET A teenager in eastern Sweden has been reported to the police for having sex with a dog in his friend's bathroom. The alleged incident happened in Norrköping last Thursday. The man is said to have suddenly taken his friend's dog, a mongrel bitch , into his bathroom and sexually attacked it, local paper Folkbladet reports. He allegedly gave no warning of what he was about to do. The dog howled of pain during the attack, the dog owner, 18, told police. Hearing the commotion, he claims he opened the bathroom door to find his friend having sex with the dog. The friend continued the attack as the dog owner looked on. He said he was too afraid to intervene, as his friend was bigger and stronger than him. Police in Norrköping are currently investigating the allegations. Swedish law does not expressly ban sex with animals , but the police are considering charges of animal cruelty . The accused man's reaction to the allegations is so far unknown, according to Folkbladet.
  6. Man Gets Probation for Dead Deer Sex Mar 21, 6:15 PM (ET) SUPERIOR, Wis. (AP) - A 20-year-old man received probation after he was convicted of having sexual contact with a dead deer. The sentence also requires Bryan James Hathaway to be evaluated as a sex offender and treated at the Institute for Psychological and Sexual Health in Duluth, Minn. "The state believes that particular place is the best to provide treatment for the individual," Assistant District Attorney Jim Boughner said. Hathaway's probation will be served at the same time as a nine-month jail sentence he received in February for violating his extended supervision. He was found guilty in April 2005 of felony mistreatment of an animal after he killed a horse with the intention of having sex with it. He was sentenced to 18 months in jail and two years of extended supervision on that charge as well as six years of probation for taking and driving a vehicle without the owner's consent. Hathaway pleaded no contest earlier this month to misdemeanor mistreatment of an animal for the incident involving the deer. He was sentenced Tuesday in Douglas County Circuit Court. "The type of behavior is disturbing," Judge Michael Lucci said. "It's disturbing to the public. It's disturbing to the court."
  7. Hooters heading for Holy Land Mon Mar 19, 2:54 PM ET U.S. restaurant chain Hooters, known for waitresses in low-cut blouses and short skirts, will open its first branch in Israel this summer, in the Mediterranean seaside city of Tel Aviv. "I strongly believe that the Hooters concept is something that Israelis are looking for," Ofer Ahiraz, who bought the Hooters franchise for Israel, told Reuters Monday. "Hooters can suit the Israeli entertainment culture.“ Ahiraz said a specific location in Tel Aviv, Israel's most cosmopolitan city, had yet to be chosen, but he said it would not open restaurants near large religious populations, and they would not be kosher. He said his plan was to open as many as five Hooters restaurants in the next few years, including one in the southern resort city of Eilat. The Tel Aviv version of Hooters is expected to mimic most of the chain's other 430 restaurants in the United States and in 23 countries including China, Switzerland, Australia and Brazil. Ahiraz said, however, he expected some minor modifications to meet Israeli tastes since U.S. chains have had a mixed response in Israel.
  8. Woman grows nipple on foot Posted on March 19th, 2007 by HealthRelatedInfos A 22-year-old woman sought medical care for a lesion in the plantar region of her left foot, a well-formed nipple surrounded by areola and hair. Microscopic examination of the dermis showed hair follicles, eccrine glands, and sebaceous glands. Fat tissue was noted at the base of the lesion. Clinical and histopathologic findings were consistent with the diagnosis of supernumerary breast tissue, also known as pseudomamma. To our knowledge, this is the first report of supernumerary breast tissue on the foot.
  9. Zhou Guizhen, who is 86-years-old, shows one of her bound feet where the bones in the four small toes were broken and forced underneath the foot over a period of time, at her home in Liuyi village in China's southern Yunnan Province, February 2007. Villages in China where women with bound feet survive are increasingly rare but the millennium-old practice nevertheless took almost four decades to eradicate after it was initially banned in 1911.

  11. Thieves make off with gold block from Japan museum Mon Mar 19, 8:30 AM ET Three masked men on Sunday snatched a block of gold bullion valued at roughly $1.71 million from a Japanese museum that allowed visitors to touch the 221-pound piece. Shoving aside a woman museum worker, the three then fled with an accomplice who had been serving as lookout at the museum in Takayama, a small city in central Japan. "There were no sensors or burglar alarms, since the museum allowed its visitors to touch the gold as they wanted," a police spokesman said. He could not explain why the gold had been displayed in the museum.
