  • Is Bloom Energy’s Fuel Cell Miracle For Real?  February 20th, 2010 The interwebs are aflutter with excitement over Bloom Energy’s top secret “Bloom Box” fuel cell system finally revealing itself. For those who haven’t already checked it out ( the website is still just a marquee), the company boasts that their systems could literally replace the electricity grid with dispersed, clean, and easy to maintain fuel cell boxes running on a variety of fuels, water, and oxygen, with no combustion at all. Sound like hype? Their PR team has certainly been working in overdrive… The scoop has been leaking for a day now on the CBS website , and on others including Fortune and GreenTechMedia . However, Sunday night was the first chance to hear real details about the Bloom Box when 60 Minutes airs a segment that with either knock your socks off, raise a lot of eyebrows, or both. Bloom has already listed almost two dozen large companies who have been stealth testers of the mysterious device including eBay, who claim to have already saved $100,000 and such perennial sustainability favorites as Google and WalMart. Hank Green suggests that the device could be installed in homes, generating both electricity and heat, which would result in big efficiency gains. Commenters on Reddit point out that the real savings may lie in avoiding transmission and maintenance costs with a machine that’s much simpler to handle than a full fledged power plant. Although the boxes cost a lot (up to $800K), the amount of power they allegedly put out more than makes up for it.
  • US diplomats add a moat to their expenses at $1bn London embassy The United States has unveiled plans for its new $1 billion high-security embassy in London — the most expensive it has ever built. The proposals were met with relief from both the present embassy’s Mayfair neighbors and the residents and developers of the Battersea wasteland where the vast crystalline cube, surrounded by a moat, will be built. The decision to abandon the former site in Grosvenor Square by 2016 came after a prolonged battle with residents angered by the security measures demanded after the September 11 attacks. More than a hundred residents took out a full-page advertisement in The Times to oppose tighter measures that they said would leave the area more vulnerable to attack. The new embassy, on a former industrial site behind Battersea power station known for its gay clubs, will be designed by Kieran Timberlake, the Philadelphia architect.
  • Two-seater rocket may fly humans to space by 2011 Mon 22nd Feb 2010 ANI Washington, February 22: Spaceflight could soon be opened up to hundreds or potentially thousands of researchers rather than just an elite few, all thanks to the development of a piloted, two-seat suborbital rocket plane called Lynx that could fly humans and experimental payloads to space as early as 2011. According to a report in Nature News, the plane was announced recently at the Next-Generation Suborbital Researchers Conference, which drew more than 250 delegates, including space scientists, aerospace-industry representatives and government officials. Lynx will operate like an aircraft, taking humans and experimental payloads on 30–45-minute suborbital flights up to heights of some 100 kilometres and then returning to the landing strip from which it launched. “I think it’s going to shock a lot of people by how transformative it is when access to space becomes like a laboratory instrument, when it becomes something you just go out and do,” said Jeff Greason, president of XCOR Aerospace, based in Mojave, California.
  • U.S. Mint rolls out a new penny The Lincoln Cent has been redesigned again. But not everyone is celebrating. February 24, 2010 12:18 PM Those of you who still use the penny as currency (rather than as a screwdriver or for scratching off lottery tickets) may soon notice America’s 1-cent coin has gotten a facelift.  The U.S. Mint has changed the design for the reverse -- or “tails” -- side of the 2010 Lincoln Cent, which entered circulation on Feb. 11 (everywhere but Puerto Rico, which received the new penny in late January). Michael White from the U.S. Mint says penny inventory is very high, however, so you may not see a new penny right away.  The U.S. Mint kicked off the release of the new penny during a ceremony at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Ill. The design was chosen out of 18 candidates. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner made the final call.
  • 2010-02-22 – Abu Dhabi 'Vanity Plate Record Breaker' Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (TML) -- The third most expensive license plate in the world was sold in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, cementing the UAE as a vanity-plate record holder. A plate bearing solely the digit '7' was sold in Abu Dhabi for 17 million dirhams, or $4.6 million, in a government auction on Saturday. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the most expensive plate '1', was sold in Abu Dhabi to Emirati businessman Said Khouri in 2008 for a staggering 52.2 million dirhams, or the equivalent of $14.2 million. The second most expensive plate, '5' was also sold in Abu Dhabi to the UAE's Al-Awail Holding company for 25.2 million dirhams, or $6.86 million, during a special number-plate auction organized by the Emirates Auction Company in 2007. In total, 72 specialized plates were sold on Saturday for a total of 50 million dirhams. "I think it's a matter of recognition," Muhammad Kashif, owner of the UAE Number Plates Company (link to website - http://www.uaenumberplates.com) told The Media Line. "Just having a Ferrari isn't much these days. People want a nice number to go with the car. It makes them just that much more popular than the other Ferrari drivers." "Some people have number plates that are worth more than their cars," he continued. "People in Dubai are wealthier than in other countries so people spend."
  • Tiger Woods Announces Return To Sex 02/20/10 - “In an announcement highly anticipated by sex fans around the world, Tiger Woods told a small gathering of reporters, family, and lovers Friday that the most dominant fornicator on the planet would soon return to sex . “Not being able to get out there and have sex has really been tough on me,” Woods said. “I’ve missed it. I love fucking with all my heart.” Woods said that during his brief time away from sex, he couldn’t stop thinking about one day resuming his daily regimen of sexual intercourse with random women who look vaguely like his wife, only skankier. “When I am out there having sex, I am in complete control,” said Woods, an acknowledged master of the long game who claims he is only truly at peace when he is between the legs of a woman. “It’s just me and my thoughts. And a high-end escort. And the lounge dancer. And sometimes [caddie] Stevie. And probably some stewardess I just met.” w/ photos
  • Pot use among seniors goes up as boomers age Gray-haired tokers turn to marijuana to relieve many problems of aging Mon., Feb. 22, 2010 MIAMI, Florida - In her 88 years, Florence Siegel has learned how to relax: A glass of wine. A copy of The New York Times, if she can wrest it from her husband. Some classical music, preferably Bach. And every night, she lifts a pipe to her lips and smokes marijuana. The use of the U.S.'s most popular illicit drug is growing among retirees as the massive generation of baby boomers who came of age in the 1960s and '70s grows older. The number of people aged 50 and older reporting marijuana use in the prior year went up from 1.9 percent to 2.9 percent from 2002 to 2008, according to surveys from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Perry Parks, 67, takes a puff of marijuana at his home in Rockingham, N.C. The retired Army pilot suffered crippling pain from degenerative disc disease and arthritis before turning to marijuana..

  • Naked sled race draws 14,000 22 Feb 10 10:06 CET A naked sledging event in Germany’s Harz region created a logistical nightmare over the weekend after 14,000 people showed up to watch 30 men and women strip before sliding down the mountain.   Normally the gentle slope in front of Braunlage’s town hall is a pretty quiet place during the winter. Beginning skiers practice their first turns, parents plop their children on sleds, and pensioners take some air. But the scene was quite different on Saturday, when thousands unexpectedly turned out for a nearly naked sledging contest sponsored by a radio station. Completely taken by surprise, authorities in the small town in Lower Saxony struggled to deal with the massive crowds. “The traffic is huge problem for us,” complained Braunlage’s police chief Michael Huth. But the logistical challenges didn’t keep around 30 contestants from stripping down to their panties or briefs and racing the 100-metre course on little red and black sledges. Many of the tanned racers looked more ready for the beach than the piste, as some even bared what had to be rather chilly nipple rings. “We had a lot of luck with the weather,” said André Gierke from the radio station 89.0 RTL. “A proper winter for naked sledging.” The 26-year-old Christian Schmidt from Blankenburg in Saxony-Anhalt won the race, but the crowd saved much of its applause for a 70-year-old pensioner who spontaneously stripped down to sledge the hill on his own. • Man Offered Lady Asphalt for Sex 02/20/10 - “ A North Carolina man was arrested after deputies say he exposed himself to a woman and offered to pave her driveway in exchange for sex . Billie Bobbie Harrison, 24, of Winston-Salem, is charged with one count of indecent exposure. The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office says Harrison and another man drove up to the home of a 55-year old Chesnee woman on Tuesday. The men asked her about paving her driveway. The victim says the conversation took a perverted turn when Harrison began to make sexual comments about her jewelry, then exposed himself to her and offered to pave the driveway in exchange for sex.” w/ photo
  • Mary Doolin Pimped Out Her Own Daughter to Undercover Cop    Tuesday, Feb. 23 2010   Iowa's known for a lot of things, such as pigs and corn and... well... pigs and corn. But the agrarian state isn't regarded for its highly developed prostitution scene. Mary J. Doolin, however, seems to have a corner on the hooker market... The 60-year-old Cedar Rapids woman has numerous previous busts for pimping and prostitution, mostly likely because she's not very good at it. So when an undercover cop called for a date in Coralville, she sent out one of her girls. But it wasn't just any girl. It was her 37-year-old daughter, Debra Voshell, who offered said cop various fleshly pleasures in exchange for U.S. currency. The cop, quite naturally, charged Lady Voshell with pandering. Doolin admitted to running a prostitution ring for years.

  • Delaware crime: Grand jury indicts Dr. Earl Bradley in rapes of 103 child patients The News Journal • February 22, 2010 Today, the Attorney General’s Office made their suspicions official, with a Sussex County grand jury indicting Bradley in the rapes of 102 girls and one boy he treated, a more-than-tenfold increase in the number of victims originally alleged. Bradley filmed many of his attacks, police have said, and for weeks investigators have been poring over hundreds of videotapes seized from his office and home as they amassed more evidence. “I know that today’s indictment will reopen painful wounds for Lewes and the Sussex County community that has already been deeply traumatized,’’ said Attorney General Beau Biden, who announced the staggering toll detailed in the 471-count indictment that was handed up earlier in the day by a Sussex County grand jury. The case against Bradley, believed to be one of the most heinous allegations of patient sexual abuse against a doctor in American history, will now move toward a trial that could take place later this year. Unless he posts $2.9 million cash bail, Bradley, 56, will await his day in court at the state prison near Smyrna. Police and prosecutors have charged Bradley with almost unspeakable depravity -- holding toddlers upside down and yelling at them while committing sex acts; penetrating a girl's vagina with his hand when she was brought in for a sore throat. In one Dec. 13 recording -- made three days before his arrest, a 2- to 3-year-old girl was seen screaming and trying to run away from Bradley, police wrote.

  • Single buyer bags 10 Aston Martin One-77 Supercars    Feb 23 2010   In the normal world of ours, we can only dream of owning “a” supercar, however, to dream of owning 10 supercars, either you’ve got to be a lazy bum with a lot of lazybones or you are someone with a lot of oil wells in the backyard.
