  • 2. Homeless Student Heads to Harvard AOL News June24, 2009    (June 23) -- Peers called Khadijah Williams the "Harvard girl," or "smart girl" who enrolled at their Los Angeles high school just 18 months ago, but she never told them of the struggles behind her success: She was homeless.    Williams, 18, graduated fourth in her high school class with a GPA just under 4.0. It's an amazing feat considering she spent the bulk of her life on the street. She, her mother Chantwuan Williams and younger sister Jeanine Williams have been moving in and out of homeless shelters throughout California for years, the Los Angeles Times reported . Khadijah recognized her gift for learning as early as age 9, when she placed in the 99th percentile on state exams. She was soon designated a gifted student.    Her elementary educational path became rocky shortly thereafter because of constant uprooting stemming from her mother's money woes. She failed to complete the fourth, fifth and eighth grades; skipped the sixth and split seventh between Los Angeles and San Diego. In total, she attended 12 schools over 12 years.    Khadijah's intelligence extends beyond the classroom. Her years spent surviving pimps, prostitutes and drug dealers taught her how to avoid bad habits and seek mentors, counselors and programs to help her reach her goals.    James and Patricia London became involved with Khadijah through one of those initiatives, South Central Scholars. After her mother and sister vanished from the homeless shelter where they were staying, the Londons opened their hilltop home to a lonely Khadijah for the remainder of her 12th grade year.    James, an orthopedic surgeon, and Patricia, a nurse, helped Khadijah with the essays for her college applications, according to the Los Angeles Times. They also taught her valuable life skills like money management, table manners and grooming.    Her Harvard recruiter, Julie Hilden, said she was impressed with her scholastic performance and knew she was a top candidate. The challenge for the Ivy League school is to create a support network of faculty, counselors and a host family that will all help foster her growth.
  • 3. Fri Jun 19, 3:45 PM ET This undated photo provided Friday, June 19, 2009 by family friend Carole Lynch shows Colby Curtin. The 10-year-old, diagnosed in 2005 with vascular cancer, desperately wanted to see the new Disney-Pixar movie 'Up,' but was too sick to go to a theater. Thanks to a family friend who got in touch with the movie studio, a Pixar employee arrived at Colby's home with a DVD copy of the movie, The Orange County Register reported Friday. Colby died later that night.
  • 4.   The Cure For Prostate Cancer  June 20, 2009 Two men with advanced and inoperable prostate cancer have made dramatic recoveries after being treated with an experimental antibody drug . Rodger Nelson and Fructuoso Solano-Revuelta are now both cancer-free and have returned to normal life. They were taking part in the trial of drug called ipilimumab that boosts the immune system… First, the patients received traditional hormone therapy to remove testosterone, which fuels prostate cancer. Researchers then introduced a single dose of ipilimumab. The drug is an antibody which builds on the hormone therapy and boosts the immune system’s response to the cancer. Both patients saw their prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels drop to the point where they became eligible for surgery. PSA is a protein in the blood that allows doctors to monitor prostate cancer. When the surgeons made their incisions, they had a surprise.

  • 6. French parliament to consider burka ban June 23, 2009 PARIS, France (CNN) -- The French National Assembly announced Tuesday the creation of a inquiry into whether women in France should be allowed to wear the burka, one day after President Nicolas Sarkozy controversially told lawmakers that the traditional Muslim garment was "not welcome" in France.  A woman wears traditionnal Muslim dress n Venissieux, near Lyon. A cross-party panel of 32 lawmakers will investigate whether the traditional Muslim garment poses a threat to the secular nature of the French constitution, Agence France-Presse reported. They are due to report back with their recommendations in six months. Last week 57 lawmakers -- led by communist legislator Andre Gerin -- signed a petition calling for a study into the feasibility of legislation to ban the burka in public places. On Monday Sarkozy declared in a keynote parliamentary address that the burka, which covers women from head to toe, is "not welcome" in France. "The problem of the burka is not a religious problem. This is an issue of a woman's freedom and dignity. This is not a religious symbol. It is a sign of subservience; it is a sign of lowering. I want to say solemnly, the burka is not welcome in France," Sarkozy told lawmakers.
  • 7. Paul Giamatti could warm up to ‘Stooges’ role June 20, 2009 – NANTUCKET - Would Paul Giamatti consider replacing Sean Penn as Larry Fine in the Farrelly Brothers upcoming “Three Stooges” flick? Soitenly! The Emmy Award -winning actor, who is here at the Nantucket Film Festival with his dark comedy “Cold Souls,” revealed that, as a kid, he thought Moe, Larry and Curly were scary and creepy. But he’s come to appreciate their comedy in middle age. “They were always so dark and grim,” winced Paul G., who won an Emmy last year for his role as the dark and grim John Adams in the critically acclaimed HBO miniseries. “And Moe was this ancient man with a little boy’s haircut. But Larry? I don’t get Larry. He’s strange. He’s sort of the blank guy in the middle.” Peter and Bobby Farrelly thought they’d finally cast their long-awaited comedy with Penn, Jim Carrey and Benicio del Torro until Penn pulled out this week for his self-imposed yearlong hiatus. But coincidentally the Farrellys and Giamatti are all on Nantucket for the rainy film festival so some impromptu casting may happen! Bobby Farrelly told the Track yesterday that Giamatti would be “a sensational Larry.” “We’d love to have Paul,” he said. However, Peter said the duo “have an offer out to someone else.” The Rhode Island homeys have been working on their “Stooges” script for 10 years and were set to begin filming it in August in Massachusetts. However, the Penn departure may push them back to October or next spring.

  • 10. The Chariot - Wearable Transportation Device This week Exmovere Holdings has unveiled a wearable transportation device, called the Chariot. Wow, what it looks like? The robot? The Chariot is a self-balancing, hands free concept vehicle which is a wearable, sensor-activated pod designed for use by amputees and others who have difficulty standing. Unlike other self-balancing vehicles(segway), the Exmovere Chariot is controlled by subtle movements of the lower torso and hips. Sensors inside the cocoon-like shell of the vehicle predict the intended motion of the wearer. The Chariot requires no manual dexterity, minimal physical effort and allows wearers to closely approach and reach objects. The upright form of the Chariot allows its wearer to make direct eye contact with others. The Chariot is battery powered and can travel up to 12 miles per hour. Exmovere will also develop a feature of the Chariot that can switch the wearer from upright to seated position. Exmovere seeks to partner with an automotive manufacturer to eventually launch a performance-oriented Chariot. + More >>

  • 14. Berlin motorcycle inventor puts the human in hybrids Published: 23 Jun 09 Who says green vehicles can’t be cool? A Berlin-based inventor has created a “human-hybrid” cycle combing a zippy electric motor with pedal power. It’s been seven years in the making, but Stefan Gulas believes his creation’s time has finally come. The lanky 38-year-old Austrian has managed to meld slick biker styling with cycling sensibility in the latest version of what he’s dubbed the eRockit – a pedal-powered bolt of lightning on wheels. “The idea was to build a machine like a motorcycle, which can out-accelerate cars,” Gulas told The Local during recent test ride in Berlin. “It’s our own system. It’s a new technology not implemented anywhere.” Formed in late 2004, his now 12-man company builds a variety of bikes, mixing the asthetics of a motorcycle with a battery motor and adding bicycle pedals to come up with a totally unique two-wheeled vehicle. Powered by electricity, the “human-hybrid” still relies on pedalling to propel it forward at speeds of up to 80 kilometres (50 miles) per hour. Despite its powerhouse performance, the eRockit otherwise behaves exactly like a regular bicycle. The rider must pedal to accelerate and brakes are located on both handlebars.     But such thrills won’t come cheap. The newest model costs nearly €30,000, making it an expensive joy for those that can afford the firm’s handcrafted precision products. Instead, he suggested the lofty purchase ought to be seen as making a stylishly green statement. The zero-emission vehicle can travel a far as 80 kilometres on a single charge, which takes four hours plugged in at home.

  • 19. Monday, Jun 22, 2009   Going down in the downturn More women are turning to sex work in a bad economy. Does it beat working at McDonald's? June 22, 2009 | Castro Valley, Calif. -- "Boob play," "pics of kitty," "topless housecleaning" and "hypno role play." The list, scribbled in a lined yellow notebook, is followed by a double-underlined figure: $725. It's 9 a.m. on a Friday and 30-year-old Marie is sitting on her couch clad in Donald Duck pajamas, munching on buttered toast and staring at her cellphone like she can will it to ring. If someone calls in response to the ad she posted this morning on Craigslist, she can add $75 to her projected income for the month. Five months ago, before being laid off, Marie was bringing in $45,000 a year at Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Now, she operates out of two offices: her living room and a regularly changing hotel room. Her uniform is different, too: Instead of conservative business attire, she dons a lace bra and booty-hugging capris. The former corporate supervisor has become a sex worker. She's applied for every strait-laced office gig she can find -- regardless of hours, pay or whether her University of California degree makes her absurdly overqualified. She went from being a manager to fighting for personal assistant positions. But last month, after innumerable unanswered cover letters, overdue bills and a delay in her unemployment checks, she entered a world of code words and cash wads. It was baptism by -- bodily fluids: She peed on a guy in her own bed for $100. Since then, she's been paid more times than she can count, or cares to count, for sex, blow jobs, hand jobs and sensual massage. Of course, Marie is far from the only woman pushed into the sex industry by these harsh economic times. Strip clubs, X-rated Web cam companies and escort managers across the country have reported an increase in job applications in the last several months -- ironically, at the same time that business is largely going down. The same phenomenon was seen after the dot-com bust, when out-of-work techies turned to everything from S/M dungeons to porn sets.    Industry insiders like to say that they're seeing more "normal" people, girls "with good minds." Mike of A&M Studios, a producer of X-rated video chats, says: "A couple years ago, we'd have a lot of strippers or people who might be on meth -- a lot of shiftier people." He continues, "Now we're seeing performers who are more educated and used to working on a regular schedule. There's been a shift to a very different class of people." Much as his phrasing gives me chills, it isn't just a cliché that women with limited job opportunities often turn to sex work.
  • 20. Thursday, June 25, 2009 Boy, 12, Claims Teacher Had Sex With Him After She Moved Into Family Home  This one sounds like a Penthouse Letter: the family of a 12-year-old boy lets a female teacher from the local school stay with them while she's having "marital problems." Then, when everyone else is asleep, the hot female teacher sneaks into his room and has sex with him. And then, the sex continues even AFTER she moves out. That is, until the whole thing starts creeping the 7th grader out and he decides to tell authorities. Now, Adrienne Feistel, 35 (pictured above ) faces four counts of committing a lewd act on a child with substantial sexual conduct and six counts of lewd acts on a child aged 14 or 15. If convicted, Feistel faces up to eight years in prison. The victim, now 15, testified during a preliminary hearing that the sexual activity with Feistel started about two months into his seventh grade year. At some point during that year, Feistel moved in with the victim’s family because she was having marital problems, he testified. The boy — who will be a high school sophomore next year — said Feistel snuck into his bed and had sex with him a couple of months after moving in. “She would come in when everybody was sleeping,” the victim testified. He said the sexual relations with Feistel continued after she moved out. The victim said the relationship made him uncomfortable and he didn’t want to have sex with the defendant. He said he ended up telling authorities what happened last August.
  • 21. Chips And Dip Cops: Prostitute, Frito-Lay worker agreed on exchange of oral treats  JUNE 24--Meet Lahoma Sue Smith. The Oklahoma woman, 36, copped a plea last week to a prostitution charge for accepting a box of Frito-Lay chips in exchange for oral sex. According to the below Oklahoma City Police Department report, john Faron Jonhson told cops that he informed Smith that he did not have any money, but that she "agreed to give him a 'blow job' meaning oral sex, for a box of chips." Johnson, a Frito-Lay employee, provided Smith with a case of chips he valued at $30. Following her February arrest, Smith, pictured in the mug shot at right, told police that she had a few prior prostitution busts. At her sentencing last week, Smith was ordered to pay a $1142 fine. Last July, with gasoline prices climbing, a Kentucky woman was arrested for accepting a $100 gasoline card in exchange for sexual favors. Smoking Gun
  • 22. Malmö win for topless Swedish bathers 24 Jun 09 14:11 CET thelocal SWEDEN  - Women in Malmö have been given the right to bathe topless in the swimming pools of Sweden's third largest city.  The city's sports and recreation committee voted on Wednesday against a motion entitled: "Women with two-piece swimsuits ought to wear a top piece". The committee eventually settled on the wording that "everybody should wear bathing suits" at Malmö pools but there is no requirement for women to cover their breasts. The city considered a vote to be necessary after several visits by the feminist Bara Bröst (Just Breasts/Bare Breasts) network to Malmö's pools met with widely varying reactions. The breast issue has proved divisive, with political wranglings leading to the question being struck off the agenda at an earlier meeting in April. These political cleavages remained on view right up until Wednesday's meetings with disagreements on both the left and right sides. But eventually the committee overcame its misgivings and the final decision was unanimous. “I’m satisfied with the decision,” Bengt Forsberg, chair of the sports and recreation committee on recreation, told The Local. “Everyone is required to have a swimsuit when visiting the city’s indoor pools and if it doesn’t cover the upper body, that’s OK too.” According to Forsberg, some on the council had lobbied for wording which would have required women to keep their nipples covered, but Forsberg explained that attempting to enforce such a rule would have been too complicated. "We don't define what bathing suits men should wear so it doesn't make much sense to do it for women. And besides, it's not unusual for men to have large breasts that resemble women's breasts," he said.
  • 23. Woman sucks her men dry in bed like female spider  20.06.2009 Source: Pravda.Ru     The police of Russia’s Tambov region arrested a female rapist, who committed perverse crimes against at least ten males. The woman would slip a Mickey Finn into their strong drinks and expose them to brutal sexual abuse. One of the woman’s victims refused to file a report against her. Valeria K., a 32-year-old woman, was nicknamed as ‘Female Spider.’ The woman was collecting spiders and was a big fan of thrillers. She would lure men into her abode, give them strong drinks with a narcotic substance in them and then use them to realize her hideous sexual fantasies, Life.ru website said. Valeria used to be a student of the Tambov University and never tried to attract public attention to herself. However, she turned out to be a nightmare to her men: she treated her victims as a female spider that sucks her males dry after copulation. Her friends said that Valeria was a big fan of sophisticated horror films and spidery creatures. She was greatly attracted to the stories about the so-called Black Widow ( Wikipedia link ). All her male acquaintances would become hospital patients, one after another.
  • 24. The men would be hospitalized after their romantic meeting with Valeria. All of them were diagnosed with clonidine poisoning and indications of sexual abuse. The men’s stories of their acquaintance with Valeria were identical. All that they could remember was their meeting with the woman and her invitation to come and visit her place to have some wine. The rapist would then strap the men’s genitals with a rubber binder and do whatever she wanted to do with them. Denis F., a 29-year-old man suffered a severe injury of the penis. The young man subsequently broke up with her fiancée. “He found a whore for himself. Let him do whatever he likes with her. I’m breaking up with him,” his former fiancée said at a hospital. Artyom Z., 32, was more precautious in his experience with Female Spider. When he came to visit the woman at her apartment, he called his friend and told him that he had met a lovely woman. The man also told his friend that she would probably not mind a love triangle in bed. Artyom woke up at a hospital the next morning. His genitals were all swollen. The police say that Valeria abused at least ten men. However, none of them wants to file a police report against the woman. “It was wonderful, - one of the victims said. – I like this hot stuff. If it wasn’t for Mickey Finn…”
