  2. Town mulls recommending guns for all By Jon Hurdle Thu Dec 7, 11:10 AM ET PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A tiny town in western Pennsylvania could ask all of its residents to own guns, if a proposal under consideration on Wednesday wins approval from local officials. Under the proposed law, residents of Cherry Tree, Pennsylvania, would be asked to own guns and know how to use them. Cherry Tree, some 70 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, has about 400 residents. The town council was scheduled to vote on the proposed "Civil Protection Ordinance" on Wednesday evening. Introduced last month by resident Henry Statkowski, the measure recommends that "all heads of households maintain a firearm along with ammunition." In written comments, Statkowski said homeowners have a right and a responsibility to defend against intruders rather than calling police and waiting for help to arrive. The measure would send a message to "burglars, ne'er-do-wells and other criminal elements," Statkowski wrote. The male head of the household has the responsibility to defend the family from intruders, he also wrote.

  4. The most powerfull gun of all times          Sometimes, madness leads to genial ideas. One can say : "is a gun a good idea ?" Well, it must be true, or else why do we build so many ones? Guns,as any weaponery, require high technology, and fine engineering.           The immense weapon you can see have existed. Moreover, there were two of these incredible guns. It has been manufactured by Krupp for the third Reich during WW-2. Hitler wanted "a gun able to pierce a meter of stell, seven meters of concrete, or thirty meters of dense earth". As you can see, it's a railroad gun. But it's so large that two railways are just enough to ensure stability and weight distribution.         Three calibers could have been used: 700, 800 and even 1000 mm ! The Oberkommando Heer conducted the fisrt tests of these enormous guns during 1935, for the growing Reich. You must know that railroad guns where very numerous during WW-2: they represented mobile high-power artillery. Before the Dora, the largest of these were 280 mm units. The design of the gun, which was very demanding, ended in 1937.         Even now, we can hardly imagine how we could manufacture the enormous 290 ton barrel, an huge steel pipe, 32 meters long. Monobloc trunion craddles, on which are put the trunion pins of the barrel, are as tall as a 4-floor building : these oversized parts needed long preparation, and initial delivery date during spring 1940 could not be met. The gun was ready in '41, and undergone testing at the Hillersleben training ground. It was ready for action in late 1942.         Unfortunately (for the gun), all its targets where almost down or captured at this time: the Maginot line, Gibraltar...         The only target the Dora crushed was Sevastopol. During five days, the gun shot 48 shells over 7 targets. Its monstrous power put down the forts of the town, delivering never seen damage at each shot. You know the "bang" a rifle does, so try to imagine the sound of apocalypse when a 7 ton shell is fired, using thousands pounds of gun powder, enough to send it dozens of miles away... This is not sci-fi, this was the madness of a tyran, and probably the most outstanding achievement in conventional ballistics.
  5. Lawmaker aims to allow the blind to hunt A Texas lawmaker is aiming to allow the blind to hunt. Texas State Representative Edmund Kuempel has introduced a measure that would allow blind people to hunt any game that sighted people can currently pursue. He hopes it will be passed after the legislature reconvenes in January though he does not expect it to come into affect until 2008. "This opens up the fun of hunting to additional people, and I think that's great," Kuempel told Reuters. The bill may find little resistance in Texas, where politicians of all stripes endorse hunting, which is wildly popular in the state. Under the bill, blind hunters would be required to have a sighted hunter with them and would be allowed to use laser sights and other devices that are currently not allowed. "A blind person can shoot a rifle by mounting an offset pistol scope on the side of the rifle instead of on top," said Terry Erwin, the Austin-based Hunter Education Coordinator with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. "This allows their companion behind them to peer over their shoulder and help them sight it, but the blind person can pull the trigger," he told Reuters.
  6. L.A. judge sides with "Borat" against frat boys Tue Dec 12, 8:40 AM ET As the esteemed Kazakh television journalist Borat Sagdiyev might say: "High Five. Sexy Time. You Lose." Two college fraternity buddies shown guzzling alcohol and making racist remarks in the "Borat" movie have lost their bid for a court order to cut the scene they claim has tarnished their reputations, court papers revealed on Monday. The students sued the movie's distributor and producers last month, saying filmmakers had duped them into appearing in "Borat" by getting them drunk and falsely promising the film would never be shown in the United States. At the time the suit was filed, a judge denied the pair's request for a temporary restraining order that would remove footage of them from the film, but the plaintiffs were given a another chance to seek an injunction at a hearing last week. The South Carolina college students lost again when Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Joseph Biderman ruled they had failed to show a reasonable probability of success on the merits of their case or that money damages alone would be insufficient to resolve their claims. Arguments on the latest motion focused mainly on the future DVD release of the hit movie, "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan." The faux documentary, distributed by 20th Century Fox, has already grossed more than $120 million at the North American box office after six weeks in theaters. The lawyer for the students, Olivier Taillieu, said last week that while the film's theatrical run is coming to a close, the perpetuity of the film on DVD posed ongoing problems for his clients, including harm to their ability to seek work. Last month, Taillieu said the movie had cost one of the students a job at a major corporation and another a prestigious internship. The students were identified in court papers only as John Doe 1 and John Doe 2. A third student involved in the scene did not take part in the suit. The film stars British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen as a fictional Kazakh TV journalist whose boorish sensibilities clash with ordinary Americans. The story line is driven by a series of improvised encounters with people who become Baron Cohen's unsuspecting foils. The scene at issue in the lawsuit depicts Borat getting drunk with three frat boys in a motor home while they watch a sex tape and make racist remarks about slavery and minorities in the United States.
  7. Woman who burned beau's penis jailed By CP MONTREAL -- A woman who used fondue fuel to set her boyfriend's penis on fire will spend the holidays in jail. Police arrested Andree Rene, 43, last week after she failed to turn up in court for sentencing arguments on a charge of aggravated assault. She was ordered yesterday to remain in custody until a Jan. 8 sentencing hearing. In April 2001, Rene's boyfriend went to bed following a heated argument between them. As he snoozed, Rene doused the man's private parts with fuel and set them aflame. The 52-year-old spent a month in hospital after suffering third-degree burns in the pelvic area and on his chest. FOUND GUILTY Rene, who was found guilty last year, faces a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison and Crown attorney Steve Lariviere said he will seek a prison term. "Sentencing is not revenge (but) at this point we do not have a common recommendation," Lariviere said, adding negotiations were continuing with Rene's lawyer. CanadaNews
