  • Russia 'chessboard killer' guilty A Russian shop assistant has been found guilty of 48 murders, which he once said he recorded on a chessboard. A Moscow jury convicted Alexander Pichushkin, known to the Russian media as the "Bittsa maniac", after four hours of deliberation. Most of the murders were committed over five years, in the Bittsa Park in Moscow's southern suburbs. Pichushkin has never denied the charges. He was also found guilty on three counts of attempted murder. The jury found there were no mitigating circumstances, and rejected a defence request to clear him of 18 of the killings. The prosecution has requested a life sentence. Many Russians would like to see him executed but Russia has suspended the use of the death penalty. Pichushkin began his 14-year killing spree in Moscow in 1992, and was arrested in June 2006. His victims were drowned in a sewer or bludgeoned to death with a hammer, investigators say. Pichushkin originally said he planned to carry out 64 killings, one for each square on a chessboard. But he later denied this, saying he would have carried on killing indefinitely if he had not been arrested. He puts the number of his victims at 61. Many were elderly men who got drunk with him, investigators say, though he also killed three women. Before the Pichushkin case came to light, Russia's most notorious serial killer in recent times was Andrei Chikatilo, who killed 53 women and children in the southern city of Rostov. He was convicted and executed in 1994. © BBC
  • Report: 'World at peak oil output' LONDON, England (CNN) -- The world has reached the point of maximum oil output and production levels will halve by 2030 -- a situation that will eventually lead to war and disaster, a report claims. The German-based Energy Watch Group released a report Tuesday saying the world's oil production peaked in 2006 and from now on will drop by around 3 percent a year. It says that by as early as 2030, the global availability of oil will be half of what it was at its peak. "It's a very serious result," said Hans-Josef Fell, a German lawmaker from the environmentalist Green Party who commissioned the report. "I fear the world will come into a big economic crisis in the coming years." The report warns that coal, uranium, and other key fossil fuels are also in declining supply. It predicts the fall in fossil fuel production will bring with it the threat of war, humanitarian disaster, and general social unrest. But Leo Drollas, who leads oil and gas market analysis and forecasting at the Center for Global Energy Studies in London, said there are plenty of supplies and no looming crisis. He said the report sounds like "scaremongering." Drollas says production could still slow one day, but only because new reserves will be considered too difficult or expensive to extract. "Oil could be left in the ground and we could move on to another fuel in the future, not because we're running out of oil but because, economically speaking, it is not worth extracting the oil," Drollas said. The debate comes as oil prices have hovered at record level. Wednesday morning, NYMEX crude was listed at $84.96 a barrel; oil prices topped $90 a barrel last week. Analysts do agree, however, that oil prices could continue to rise, especially if there is further instability in the Middle East.   CNN
  • Sexsomnia: fast asleep and having sex   National Post Published: Friday, October 19, 2007 They are as young as 15, close to a third are women and their behaviors range from self-pleasure to oral sex and intercourse. New Canadian research suggests that seasonal -- the recently discovered phenomenon of people who have sex while fast asleep -- is more widespread than expected, and includes a wide assortment of people. Contact with a bed partner's body was the most common trigger for sleep sex reported by the 219 subjects, while a relatively small percentage ended up in trouble with the law, some after involving children in their unconscious acts. Many had other psychological conditions, such as depression, although for some sexsomniacs it seems to be an acceptable, if slightly odd, part of their lives. In a phenomenon that is likened to sleepwalking, they typically remember nothing of the incidents.  The study was based on a survey of self-identified sleepsex practitioners, many of them Canadian, who registered at the Web site sleepsex. org. The site quotes some of those who have come forward, including the fiancée of a man who repeatedly started fondling and groping her while he was asleep. First reported by scientists about 20 years ago, seasonal has gradually been recognized over the last few years as a legitimate sleep disorder. A 33-year-old Ontario man was even acquitted of sexual assault in 2005 on the grounds that he was a sexsomniac and asleep at the time. Most of the research, though, has been based on individual case studies, often involving patients referred to sleep clinics by lawyers whose clients faced criminal charges. The cross-section of sexsomniacs was 31% female and ranged in age from 15 to 67 years old, with an average of 30 years, the vast majority being heterosexual, according to a paper on the study recently published in the journal Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology. About half had engaged in intercourse while sleeping and more than a third moaned or had other "sexualized vocalizations" during the episodes, the study found. Many reported having oral sex asleep.
  • One golfer, one round, two holes in one   October 24, 2007 – 10:25 AM The retired postmaster from Pequot Lakes, Minn., carded two holes in one in a single round, beating odds determined in 2000 by a retired math professor hired by Golf Digest: 67 million to 1 . Misencik, who turns 57 years old Thursday, aced holes No. 2 and 13 at the Preserve at Grand View Lodge in Pequot Lakes. “ ‘Go, go, go!’ ” Misencik recalled he and his golf partners yelling that day as the ball rolled about 20 feet into the cup for his second hole in one on Oct. 12. A fortune bounce -- his 9-iron tee shot on No. 13 from about 128 yards “kicked right off a bank,” Misencik said -- made the ace possible. His first hole in one that day was a “good shot [with an 8 iron from about 140 yards] that bounced within a foot of the hole,” he said. “One bounce and it was in.” Misencik’s 18-hole score that day wasn’t as satisfying as what he’s used to, he said. The 10-handicap golfer who plays about 50 rounds a year shot an 88. He said he has one previous ace since he took up the game “off and on” starting in his 20s. That came in 1993 at Nordic Trails in Alexandria, Minn. Tradition has it that anyone who cards an ace has to buy a round at the clubhouse bar. Misencik said he got off cheap, though, given the sparse number of golfers this time of year. He got nicked for just one beer. StarTribune
  • 5 Confess To Toothpick Prank On Football Field POSTED: 9:48 am EDT October 22, 2007 DETROIT -State police said five students are responsible for planting thousands of toothpicks in a high school football field. WJRT-TV reports that the students from Oscoda confessed to sticking about 5,000 toothpicks in the Tawas Area High School turf last week. No charges have yet been filed. Players warming up for a game against Alcona noticed the toothpicks, which forced the game to be moved 37 miles north to Alcona County. Tawas City is in Iosco County. Oscoda is the county directly northwest of Iosco in Michigan's northeast Lower Peninsula. Investigators had said they would go from business to business with toothpick boxes left on the field to find the pranksters.

Last updated at 09:44am on 23rd October 2007   Slender Georgia Horsley, who has been crowned Miss England, has been told to pile on the pounds if she wants to win the world title. The size eight florist who tips the scales at nine stone has the figure most women would die for - but the organizers of the Miss World competition are looking for a contestant with more curves to win this year. Georgia is now on a high fat diet to help her plump up in time for the beauty pageant.   Daily Mail
  • 13th century Koran fetches record price at auction Tue Oct 23, 6:19 PM ET A 13th century Koran was sold on Tuesday for a world record price of 1,140,500 pounds ( 2,320,917 dollars , 1,632,055 euros), auction house Christie's said. The Islamic holy book, which had been expected to fetch between 250,000 and 300,000 pounds, was sold as part of an auction of art from the Islamic and Indian World that brought in a total of 5.9 million pounds. Dated to 1203 and written entirely in gold, with marginal notes in silver, it is the earliest known complete, dated Koran, written in gold in the world, and broke the record for a Koran, and the record for any Islamic manuscript, sold at auction. Also sold on Tuesday was a nearly complete 10th century Kufic Koran, which is thought to originate from North Africa or the Middle East, which fetched 916,500 pounds, compared to its pre-sale estimate of up to 600,000 pounds. "Today's extraordinary sale total is one of the highest ever for Islamic Art at Christie's, reflecting the depth of demand and very strong prices realised throughout the field of classical Islamic Art," said William Robinson, director of Islamic Art and Carpets and Head of sale at Christie's. "Fiercely competitive bidding on the telephone, in the room and on the Internet led to a particularly lively salesroom."
  • Police: Mom Fed Infant Whiskey In Baby Bottle Woman Faces 3 Charges October 24, 2007 INDIANAPOLIS -- A mother was arrested after giving her 4-month-old girl whiskey in her bottle, police said. Indianapolis Metro police said Mary Skaggs, 28, faces two counts of neglect of a dependent and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Police were called to Methodist Hospital Saturday by a social worker there. Officials said a test revealed that the child had a blood-alcohol level of 0.048. Investigators said Skaggs told the hospital that she had put whiskey on the girl's gums because she was teething. Police later determined that Skaggs had put whiskey in the girl's bottle, mixed with formula to try to get her to stop crying.
  • Looking for attractive people? Don't go to... Mon Oct 22, 10:55 AM ET Philadelphia is home to the least attractive people in the United States, a survey of visitors and residents showed on Friday. The city of more than 1.5 million people was also found to be among the least stylish, least active, least friendly and least worldly, according to the "America's Favorite Cities" survey by Travel & Leisure magazine and CNN Headline News. About 60,000 people responded to the online survey -- at www.travelandleisure.com -- which ranked 25 cities in categories including shopping, food, culture, and cityscape, said Amy Farley, senior editor at the magazine. For unattractiveness, Philadelphia just beat out Washington DC and Dallas/Fort Worth for the bottom spot. Miami and San Diego are home to the most attractive people, the poll found. But Farley pointed out the results don't mean people in Philadelphia are ugly or the city is a bad place to visit. "We were asking people to vote on attractiveness, not unattractiveness. Travel & Leisure editors believe there are a lot of attractive people in Philadelphia," she said. "The relative attractiveness of its residents is only a minuscule factor in evaluating a city's merit." Philadelphians' self-esteem has been undermined by national surveys showing they are among the fattest people in the United States. The American Obesity Association ranked the city in the top 10 for overweight people every year between 2000 and 2005.

  • Continent-size toxic stew of plastic trash fouling swath of Pacific Ocean Friday, October 19, 2007  At the start of the Academy Award-winning movie "American Beauty," a character videotapes a plastic grocery bag as it drifts into the air, an event he casts as a symbol of life's unpredictable currents, and declares the romantic moment as a "most beautiful thing." To the eyes of an oceanographer, the image is pure catastrophe. In reality, the rogue bag would float into a sewer, follow the storm drain to the ocean, then make its way to the so-called Great Pacific Garbage Patch - a heap of debris floating in the Pacific that's twice the size of Texas, according to marine biologists. The enormous stew of trash - which consists of 80 percent plastics and weighs some 3.5 million tons, say oceanographers - floats where few people ever travel, in a no-man's land between San Francisco and Hawaii. Marcus Eriksen, director of research and education at the Algalita Marine Research Foundation in Long Beach, said his group has been monitoring the Garbage Patch for 10 years. The patch has been growing, along with ocean debris worldwide, tenfold every decade since the 1950s, said Chris Parry, public education program manager with the California Coastal Commission in San Francisco. Ocean current patterns may keep the flotsam stashed in a part of the world few will ever see, but the majority of its content is generated onshore, according to a report from Greenpeace last year titled "Plastic Debris in the World's Oceans." The report found that 80 percent of the oceans' litter originated on land. While ships drop the occasional load of shoes or hockey gloves into the waters (sometimes on purpose and illegally), the vast majority of sea garbage begins its journey as onshore trash. That's what makes a potentially toxic swamp like the Garbage Patch entirely preventable, Parry said. "At this point, cleaning it up isn't an option," Parry said. "It's just going to get bigger as our reliance on plastics continues. ... The long-term solution is to stop producing as much plastic products at home and change our consumption habits."
  • 10 Bruce Lee Facts 1. Bruce Lee’s Family Gave Him a Girl’s Name: "Little Peacock" Bruce’s family never called him "Bruce." They preferred to call him by his nickname "Sai Fon" or "Little Phoenix." It was a girl’s name, deliberately chosen by his parents because they believed that evil spirits did not like boys in the family (their firstborn was a son who died in infancy). So, by giving Bruce a girl’s name, they believed they could fool the demons into sparing his life! Actually, "Bruce" was a name given by a nurse at the Jackson Street Hospital, San Francisco, where he was born (Bruce’s father was traveling with an acting troupe at the time). The nurse thought that giving the baby an English name would help avoid any confusion with his American birth certificate (yes, Bruce was an American by birth - he never had any other citizenship). 2. Bruce Lee was Part German Bruce wasn’t pure Chinese - he was actually part German (his grandfather from his mother’s side was half German). 3. Bruce Lee Never  Lost a Fight Well, actually he lost a fight only once in his life: when he was 13 years old. This loss actually prompted Bruce to learn martial arts from a Wing Chun master named Yip Man. After other students learned that Bruce wasn’t pure Chinese, they refused to let him train in their class. Yip Man had to train him privately.
  • 4. Bruce Lee was a Bad Student Academics didn’t interest Bruce in the least. After primary school, Bruce entered La Salle College, an English-speaking boys’ secondary school in Kowloon, Hong Kong, where he often got into trouble. Bruce was expelled from La Salle for disruptive behavior. 5. Bruce Lee was an Excellent  Dancer  and Boxer Actually, Bruce studied dancing as hard as he studied martial arts: he was an excellent dancer who, at 18 years of age, won the 1958 Hong Kong Cha Cha Championship! Bruce was also a great boxer: he won the 1958 Boxing Championship - by knockout, of course. 6. Bruce Lee was a Philosophy Major Bruce wasn’t just all muscle and no brain. He attended the University of Washington, where he majored in philosophy with focus on the philosophical principles of martial art techniques. As you might imagine, Bruce supported himself in college by teaching martial arts. Later, Bruce dropped out of college to open his martial arts school. 7. Want to challenge Bruce Lee? Just tap your foot on the ground! After he got famous, a lot of people thought they could beat Bruce - they would walk up to him, tap their foot on the ground (symbolizing a challenge) and then proceed to attack him! Well… maybe not that literal, but Bruce’s popularity certainly attracted a lot nutcase trying to prove they’re better than him. One day, while filming Enter the Dragon, an extra taunted Bruce Lee and challenged him to fight. The whole thing went on like this: "This kid was good. He was no punk. He was strong and fast, and he was really trying to punch Bruce’s brains in. But Bruce just methodically took him apart." "I mean Bruce kept moving so well, this kid couldn’t touch him…Then all of a sudden, Bruce got him and rammed his ass into the wall and swept him, he proceeded to drop his knee into his opponent’s chest, locked his arm out straight, and nailed him in the face repeatedly." Typical of Bruce Lee, after the fight he didn’t fire the extra - he actually gave his challenger lesson on how to improve!
  • 8. Bruce Lee was Strong In 1964, Bruce was invited to a karate championship in Long Beach, California. There he performed his famous "One Inch Punch," where he would deliver a devastating blow from only an inch away, sending his opponent flying back! Bob Baker of Stockton, whom Bruce hit, said " I told Bruce not to do this type of demonstration again. When he punched me that last time, I had to stay home from work because the pain in my chest was unbearable. " … and Fast! Most martial art films are sped up to make fighting scenes appear fast, but not Bruce Lee’s. His moves were too fast to be captured on the regular 24 frames per second film - so they had to film him at 32 fps, and run the film slower so you can see his moves. 9. Bruce Lee vs. Chuck Norris , who would win? Here’s a clip of Bruce Lee fighting Chuck Norris in Return of the Dragon . You can see how fast Bruce Lee moved … though it’s obvious that Chuck Norris would be immune to the One Inch Punch as his one-inch chest hair would absorb the punch with ease! And the most bizarre Bruce Lee fact is this: 10. Bruce Lee’s Corpse Acted in his Final  Movie!!  Bruce Lee was filming Game of Death when he died unexpectedly. So what did the studio do? Well, they rewrote the script so Bruce’s character faked his own death to escape the mafia. Then they took footage from Bruce’s actual funeral - including close-ups shots of the open casket showing his embalmed face - and work that into the movie!
