On 17 February 2008, members ofthe Assembly ofKosovo, acting in individual capacity andnot as partofUNMIK's PISG, declared independence fromSerbia. This move was controversial among the international community. The Republic of Kosovo has been recognized by 107 UN member states, the Republic ofChina (Taiwan) and the OrderofMalta. Additionally some countries that don't recognize the Republic of Kosovo(PR China,Russia, Romania, Slovakia, Greece), andthe European Union, maintain non-diplomatic official “liaison offices” in Kosovo. Kosovomaintains a number ofdiplomatic missions abroad and several countries have embassies or representative offices in Pristina.
