1. Application of Vision Systems
Bobby Lindsey
InVision Systems
Western Kentucky University
2. What is a Vision System?
Consists of camera(s), a controller, and software
Uses images to perform inspections
Makes decisions based on acquired images
Interfaces with other devices and machines
3. Why Use A Vision System?
Take many measurements very quickly
Detect complex patterns and shapes
Identify and track parts by label
Calculate statistical data from inspections
Track the source of problems
Highly adaptable and scalable

12. Closer Look: Lighting Lighting
One of the most important aspects of a good image
Can be direct or indirect
May be always on or fire with shutter
Glare can be a major issue
Must be steady and non flickering
Ambient lighting may be sufficient for some
applications

17. Closer Look: Products Product
Products can range in size, shape, and complexity
Some larger products may require multiple cameras
and/or movement of cameras to perform inspections
Aspects such as position, size, and occurrence
Products may be tracked or recognized by identifying
text using OCR functions
18. CCD
Closer Look: Camera Lens
Light is sent through the lens and is focused on the
CCD sensor
The CCD sensor creates an electrical signal
representing the light
Lens selection is dependent on the size of the product
being measured and the accuracy needed
Camera resolutions typically ranges from <0.5 MP to
16 MP
Effective resolution may vary with application
36. Closer Look: Controller Controller
Runs specialized vision system software
Processes images obtained from the camera(s)
Performs inspections on the images based on the
program specifications
Makes decisions based on results of the inspection
May signal external devices upon inspection results
Can track results and produce statistical reports
56. Where are Vision Systems Used?
Product Inspection Machine Vision
57. Pick and Place
Uses a vision system to
pick up very small
components such as
resistors, diodes, and
transistors
The magnified image
aids in the positioning
of these components
correctly onto the PCB

62. Printed Circuit Board Mill
Uses a vision system to
position the tool holder
when changing tools
After milling, the
camera is used to
inspect the machined
features

67. Conclusions
Consist of camera(s), a controller, and software
Very useful for performing inspections on products
Data gathered from inspections may be stored and/or
transmitted to other devices
May also be used in numerous ways to assure and
improve the quality of products
