My slides from DIY Days in NYC March, 2011. I have very minimal notes in these, but I think you can get the gist of the speech. The video will be online at my blog before too long.

  • Harlan County USA- and docs even then were relevant\n
  • what happened? Can we regain that importance? might diy be crucial to this\n
  • \n
  • Handyman and Maker - still around, but also a political stance\n
  • often grounded in 60s counterculture, grassroots direct power, change the world\n
  • but what we’re most associated with as indies comes from punk\n
  • angry\n
  • political\n
  • empowered\n
  • anti consumerist\n
  • engaged - Death (band)\n
  • everyday living\n
  • Sex Pistols\n
  • breaks confines\n
  • The Germs - doesn’t accept status quo\n
  • self distributed\n

  • connected to hardcore fans, but most of all\n
  • not selling out\n

  • If you strip this out, it’s not DIY. Of course, Huyssen would say that’s what capitalism does, strip out the political from the action. Make it about self-empowerment only for self, not for the group, just about the money. But I think we’re better than that and alternate voices are needed.\n
  • it’s why I like diy transmedia trends\n
  • 1st two - reclaim story and empower audience, not just creator. Why it is resisted. Anti consumerist and pro interaction.\n
  • We can also learn a lot from the DIY and general indie movement\n
  • \n
  • But they shouldn’t be the only ones to have the mantle\n
  • as we’ve seen\n
  • Break confines, tell better stories. we need\n
  • to help people envision a better world\n
  • Right is telling a pretty damn good story. we need better ones\n

  • Internet being broken, won’t be as you see it now\nowned by corporate and gov -serve their (and plutocracy) interests\nclaim piracy is problem, but it’s about control\n
  • kill switch not just in Egypt\nMovement needs a better story, needs more creative response, needs it now\n
  • So this, in closing is my plea to you - regroup, put the politics back in DIY, Fight the power and give us a better story\n

  • Note: In my live presentation, this is where I stopped and explained to everyone that this slide-set really needs more diversity, especially in regards to women. I searched the web for many more images of DIY women pioneers, for this section and the earlier one (where I show Barbara Kopple) and had a very hard time finding them –not that they didn’t exist, but it is hard to find images of many of these pioneering artists online (especially of the right sizeand image quality). This acknowledgement doesn’t change theslight, but does hopefully make it clear that I am aware of the need for a new version of this in the future that takes intoaccount people like Susan Robeson, filmmakers who worked with Third World and California Newsreel and more. I welcome suggestions in the comments section.
