Richard J. Murphy, president and CEO of South Nassau Communities Hospital, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS). HANYS is a statewide advocacy organization for over 550 nonprofit and public hospitals and other healthcare providers in New York. Mr. Murphy looks forward to working with HANYS leadership and other board members to fulfill its mission of advancing healthcare in New York. He has served as president and CEO of South Nassau since 2012 and overseen several quality awards and the restoration of healthcare services to Long Beach after Hurricane Sandy.

Leading Hospital Association Appoints
Richard J. Murphy of South Nassau to its Board of Trustees
Oceanside, N.Y.— South Nassau Communities Hospital President and CEO Richard J. Murphy has
been appointed to Board of Trustees of the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS).
HANYS’ volunteer Board of Trustees is responsible for managing the Association’s activities. The
association is the statewide advocate for more than 550 non-profit and public hospitals, nursing homes,
home care agencies, and other health care organizations throughout New York State. Its mission is to
advance the health of individuals and communities by providing leadership, representation, and service to
healthcare providers and systems across the entire continuum of care.

in New York and promoting better health care for all New Yorkers through the coordinated efforts of its
members,” said Mr. Murphy. “I’m humbled by this appointment and look forward to working with HANYS’

Mr. Murphy has served as president and CEO of South Nassau since August of 2012. During his tenure
at South Nassau, the hospital has won a series of major awards for quality, including for nursing excellence,
patient safety and top rankings from U.S. News & World Report & from the Joint Commission. Mr. Murphy
also has been instrumental in South Nassau’s takeover of the former Long Beach Medical Center, which was
shuttered after Superstorm Sandy. Mr. Murphy has led the effort to restore health services to Long Beach while
strengthening SNCH’s ability to serve the health care needs of the entire South Shore from Queens to Suffolk.
Prior to coming to South Nassau, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Richmond
University Medical Center in Staten Island, NY. His accomplishments include the execution of a successful
financial post divestiture from St. Vincent’s Catholic Medical Center of New York, which improved facility
operating performance; and development of a strategic planning process to enhance physician partnerships,
increase market share and expand capital reinvestment. His past experience also includes a leadership role in
Long Island’s Catholic Health System, as the Executive Vice President of CHS’s Suffolk Region hospitals,
2. which included his serving as the Chief Executive Officer of Good Samaritan, St. Charles and St. Catherine of
Siena hospitals.
Designated a Magnet® hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), South Nassau®
Communities Hospital is one of the region’s largest hospitals, with 455 beds, more than 900 physicians and
