  • In 2011, Northern Arizona University (NAU), in Flagstaff Arizona began looking into developing a mobile strategy. Their IT department knew that they needed to mobilize all of their information systems and portals in order to provide a higher level of service to their students because, on their campus, more students owned smartphones than laptops. Once they began investigating a mobile solution, two other groups on campus quickly became interested in joining forces: Alumni Relations, Undergraduate Admissions.
  • Both of those groups saw huge value in creating an additional touch point with their future, current, and past students - they saw a mobile app as a wonderful opportunity to modernize their approach and impact their bottom line. As a group, they knew that they needed to align their institutional goals with their mobile strategy in order to track their impact. - For IT the first priority was delivering mobile access to all of their major portals (uPortal, PeopleSoft, Library, and Blackboard) because they are they most highly used by their students, and would add immediate and perpetual value to their everyday lives. - For Undergraduate Admissions their number one priority was to add mobile access to their university admissions pages to increase their enrollment rates. - And for Alumni Relations, they wanted a way for their alumni to maintain contact with the university and (obviously) make it as easy as possible to give back to the university.
  • By consolidating all of these services into a single app they were able to achieve make an impact on all of their institutional goals: For IT - Mobilizing their major portals has increased their overall usage, having an especially valuable impact on their library systems. They were prepared to pay a consultant to update and mobilize their data, instead they were able to simply plug their data in Blackboard Mobile ’ s existing framework saving them the time, effort and thousands of dollars they were ready to pay for the same service . For Undergraduate admissions - NAU Mobile has been downloaded over 7,000 times since last year and within one year, doubled their online admissions from mobile devices. In addition to that, in just one weekend more than 20 prospective students accepted their offers to NAU through the mobile app. All of these points proving that mobile has become true channel for university recruitment. For Alumni Relations - they were able to deliver mobile access to their alumni pages to keep them connect to alumni events nearby, the hottest alumni news and all of their social networks - not to mention one tap access to donate to the university. They use an array of Blackboard Products: Mobile, Learn 9.1, Transact, and Collaborate.
